CONNER_NWHC 12-08-2004 12:59 AM

Im guessing not to many people are into punk in south dakota.

capri sun junkie 12-08-2004 01:07 AM

Haha, the truth... I suppose in a couple of cities, there is something going on. Like I'm 80 miles from a city that has had some pretty good bands play this year... Ed Gein, Martyr AD, and some others I can't remember. There are quite a few good local bands there as well. Nodes Of Ranvier actually came out of this city, (Sioux Falls) but I don't really like them.

CONNER_NWHC 12-08-2004 01:10 AM

It must be boring there that far from a city.

capri sun junkie 12-08-2004 01:12 AM

It is... If I had a more reasonable car, it wouldn't be so bad.

The show I'm going to has a band that needs new lead vocals, and they want someone who can scream. They might have me do it, but I'm going to see if I can change their taste's a little.
Refer to page 1, but here's a quick definition...

Hardcore= Faster, harder punk, often with screamed vocals (Give Up The Ghost, Scraps And Heart Attacks, The Procedure, Comeback Kid)

Metalcore= Hardcore fused with metal. A lot of bands are starting to lean towards metal and it is hard to here the hardcore in them. (Walls Of Jericho, early Poison The Well, early Avenged Sevenfold)

Grindcore= Eh, I'd rather not take this one because I'm not sure of which bands are true grind but, I believe bands like Napalm Death, Agoraphobic Nosebleed and Cattle Decapitation are considered "true" grind. Then you have the newer wave of grind which is a bit hard to classify. Bands like The Locust, Daughters and The Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravangza are not true grind, but definitely have some grind in them. Grind is getting pretty varied also. You can go from the hardcore grind sounds The Locust to the almost Death Metal growls of The Red Chord.

Discerning Metal from Metalcore= As I said, metalcore is a fusion of metal and hardcore. But most of the mainstream/fashioncore metalcore bands of today (Atreyu, Bleeding Through, Eighteen Visions) are starting to lose the hardcore in them. When listening to Bleeding Through or Norma Jean, it's hard to pick out the hardcore, essentially making them a metal band. I think Buddy puts it best when he does his metalcore reviews, labeling them "Metalcore/Melodic Metal." Though it might sound strange to call Atreyu Metal (especially to metal fans), Metal is the genre they are closest to. Many extreme metal fans shun this because, in my opinion, metal has become a duel of which bands are the darkest, fastest and heaviest, leaving no room for Atreyu. So metalcore has become a little storage place for bands that fall somewhere between hardcore and metal, even though most of them are in reality "metal" bands. In Walls Of Jericho's music, you can hear both metal and hardcore, making them a true metalcore band. Compare Distance Makes The Hear Grow Fonder Poison The Well with You Come Before You Poison The Well. You Come Before You is truly a metal album, while Distance Makes... is pretty much true metalcore. But the point is, melodic metal bands that are "not hard enough" to be placed in the metal genre are being thrown into metalcore. Just as the definition of screamo has morphed, the definition of metalcore is also.
Thanks man. :)

capri sun junkie 12-08-2004 07:48 AM

I think I consider Cattle Decapitation death metal still...

sten 12-08-2004 09:18 AM

hmm, that's really interesting to read about but im not sure i could tell the difference myself. on the whole subject of genres in general i know a lot of people get annoyed with the fact that they are grouping things together into categories etc. but i find it really interesting(i know i just said that!) to read about it and what people's interpretations of different genres are, so yeh thanks for posting that whoever did!

sten 12-08-2004 09:31 AM

um this is really unintelligent of me and i apologise in advance for my lack of musical knowledge but what exactly is a 'breakdown' can someone explain to me in layman's terms?!

cbmartinez 12-08-2004 11:24 AM

Hardcore Breakdown= A part of the song that is palm-muted and is good for dancing. It may feel a little heavier, slower, angrier than the rest of the song.

http://bridge9.com/bridgenine/sound/carry-on_a-life-less-plagued.mp3 (Listen towards the end, when the riff gets palm-muted.)

Metalcore Breakdown= Essentially the same thing, but metalcore breakdowns often get associated with the word chug. Metalcore breakdowns usually consist of open power chords played in a certain rhthym, known as chugging.

http://www.purevolume.com/underminded (Listen to the song 'It's Kinda' Like A Bodybag." The part where the singer screams "Who needs a bodybag," there is a breakdown playing in the background.)

cbmartinez 12-08-2004 01:19 PM

I found a band with former Evergreen Terrace members.

My Hostage

They're okay.

I really enjoyed Carry On live.
Last show was pretty siqqqqq.

Let's Chop Cats! 12-08-2004 02:28 PM

So aparently Propagandhi have a song "Firestorm, My Ass". Once I find it, it better be the funniest song I've ever heard.

capri sun junkie 12-08-2004 02:30 PM

Its not. Its the song Nailing Descartes To The Wall... off of Less Talk, More Rock with a different title and a couple of changed lyrics. Its on Where Quality Is Job #1

Let's Chop Cats! 12-08-2004 02:31 PM

Ahh ok, My friend said that was the title of the song.

capri sun junkie 12-08-2004 02:32 PM

It is the title of the song...

Let's Chop Cats! 12-08-2004 02:34 PM

I think they may be different songs, cause I just found the one I'm looking for "Firestorm, My As" I'll compare them to see if they're different.

capri sun junkie 12-08-2004 02:35 PM

Same music, a little different lyrics. Although now that I think about it... It might be Less Talk, More Rock I am talking about... I don't know, but its one of those songs...

Let's Chop Cats! 12-08-2004 02:38 PM

Yeah it is, Damn my friend got my hopes up. Would have been funny if it was all about Earth Crisis.

tornpictures 12-08-2004 02:39 PM

Reversal of Man ripped off the Firestorm riff, can't remember the song title, though.

BroXmosh kids threatened to beat them up if they played it anywhere near Gainesville.

cbmartinez 12-08-2004 03:39 PM

I don't care what anyone says, I really like Suicide Notes And Butterfly Kisses.

Let's Chop Cats! 12-08-2004 03:40 PM

It all sounds the same, I can only listen to that album for like 10 minutes tops. I really regreat buying it, but it was a choice between that or the Bigwig CD I had lost (Which I later found)

cbmartinez 12-08-2004 03:43 PM

I think it starts off strong, but slowly loses momentum.

capri sun junkie 12-08-2004 03:46 PM

I think it was good, but I just overplayed it... So I don't really like it that much anymore.

There is a couple good songs. At Least I Know I'm A Sinner...

cbmartinez 12-08-2004 03:48 PM

Yeah, I'm listening to it now for the first time in a while. I think "At Least I Know I'm A Sinner" is one of the weakest ones.

/me reps you anyway

capri sun junkie 12-08-2004 03:50 PM

:(

I'm a weak person.

:)

BridgeToSolace 12-08-2004 03:50 PM

For the sake of getting off the topic of Atreyu, anyone else into Freya?

I just got As The Last Light Drains, and besides a little bit of awkward singing at some points, it's sweet.

I've had that for a while. I like them quite a bit. On the new split with Hoods, it sounds like Karl does most of the singing.

Aye, it's from '03. I'm a little behind on my hardcore, considering I just got into it a month or two ago after hearing Bridge To Solace.

I saw a review for that split, but I'm not big on Hoods, so I decided to get War Is Hell instead. It's freaking amazing.

I don't know about you guys, but even if some of the bands aren't that good, I'm pretty happy that there are at least bands and shows around my area.

Let's Chop Cats! 12-08-2004 07:35 PM

XOneWayX - Generic Hardcore Song The Video
From the first time they played this song when I went to see them, sadly I am not to be seen in this video. If they put up the 2nd video you can probably see me.
