R.I.P. Cliff! He wrote the Master of Puppets interlude, which is THE thing that got me into Metallica and into metal, and is by far one of my favorite moments of any song ever.

I'm sixteen and a half right now, and I've been listening to Metallica since I was eleven, so just over a third of my life now. Metallica, along with Pantera, have had more impact and influence on my life than any other band, I've pretty much grown up with them. They're one of my biggest influences on guitar and I have so many awesome memories of them, whether it's thinking about them at recess when I was just discovering them back in elementary school, or learning their songs on guitar, or slowly buying their cds one by one, or whatever. They've been such a major part of my life for the last third of it, I really can't thank them enough for it and I actually have trouble finding the right words to describe how much I love them. I honestly love and appreciate their music in a way that probably most people my age that I personally know just don't for their favorite band (mainly because a lot of people my age that I know just listen to whatever's popular and their favorite band changes all the time, and they haven't been listening to their music nearly as long as I have, and haven't "grown up" with it like I have).

So once again, R.I.P. Cliff and thank you for writing one of the best pieces of music I've ever heard, and thank you to the rest of the guys in Metallica, and Pantera, for writing music that's been such a major part of my life for so long.

NP: Master of Puppets (that interlude really is a piece of musical genious - same with the middle part of Orion)

It's great that even after all these years, ppl still remember him. He may not have been as technically skill as Jaco Pastorius or Flea, but it was his inventiveness and stage presence (from footage that I've seen) that I really admired.

I'm sure he can play the same stuff as flea, but I haven't heard any stuff like that on the albums. That was what I was going by.

To me though, Cliff was like Eddie Van Halen on bass. He was always finding something new that had never been done on a bass guitar. That certainly makes him stand out even beyond Flea.

Flea is nothing, dude. It's because he can slap and plays funk, every little kid thinks he's god. Just like people think Sam Totman is because he can pick tap fast, but sloppy.

I'm sure if you went to the bass forum, they'd tell you the same.

I think you're kinda underestimating the difficulty of funk-style bass playing. It really is harder than it looks. (i play both bass and guitar)

Flea is highly skilled in his own right, but I'd say Cliff was more progressive in playing style. Cliff wrote some of the coolest bass AND guitar riffs ever. Not even flea could say the same.


(I'm more of a fan of Herman Li than Sam Totman. I have a fetish for sweeping.)

I heard that Cliff actually wrote some of Kirk's leads. I'm not sure if that's true, but if so, I think that's kind of cool for him, not so cool for Hammett.

I heard that it was cliff working with Kirk that caused a lot of material for Puppets to be written.

Well it was literally nothing for my bass player friend in college. He'd only been playing 3 years and could play RHCP with easy if he wanted, jazz is where it's at for complex stuff apparantly. There were 2 of them actually and they both used to play Jaco Pastorius stuff and Wicter Wooten which was, according to them, much harder to pull off.

funk isn't easy.

that said...there's an amazing bassist here at my uni who i jam with regularly. im learning a lot abt funk/jazz that way.

he's actually on the forusm, i just dunno his sn :]

bass playing ability aside, Cliff was musical genius. he even surpassed the people who taught him music. he had a brilliant vision and the abilities to see it through. hard to imagine what Metallica would be if he was still alive.
