I'd have to say my favorite jazz album is Bitches Brew, but I'm not a huge jazz fan. I don't feel Bitches Brew is amazing like most of you think.

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 08-02-2005 08:37 PM
I don't even know how to describe Bitches Brew, I sometimes think of it as "sludge" psychedelia in jazz.
Although it's very trippy stuff it's not really psychedelic Jazz but it's one of the first mixes of Rock and Jazz latter to be called Jazz-Fusion. In A Silent Way (by Miles Davis) which was made directly before Bitches Brew is usally considered the birth of Fusion.

If you want psychedelic Jazz check out some Free Jazz or some Avant Garde. Out to Lunch is a great example of Free Jazz and Alantis by Sun Ra is a good example of Avant Garde. Just to make things clear:

Free Jazz > Avant Garde

I can never get the write word for Bitches Brew, but it has that psychedelic/trippy/dripping/sludge feel to it. To me, at least

I read in Rolling Stone that the Dead are releasing a 10 disc box set of every show in the Live/Dead run at the Fillmore West. It's only available off their website for $79.95, and only 10,000 copies are being made, but a 3 disc retail version is being release in November or something.

I'm trying to decide if I want it, though I will definitely get the retail version if I don't get this.

I heard on the radio that Floyd are putting out a new DVD

pigonthewing82 08-02-2005 08:55 PM

Today I heard a live Gratful Dead cover of Hey Jude, it was pretty cool, I love when the Dead do covers like that.
I heard on the radio that Floyd are putting out a new DVD
Which reminds me, in the same Rolling Stone there was an interview with Roger Waters. He denied all rumors that Floyd were going to tour. I believe his reasoning for not doing a tour was "I can roll over for a day, but not for a whole fucking tour." As in he can manage not start shit with Gilmour for a day, but not for a tour.

They did that for the encore on one of the Live/Dead shows (it was in the article).

Aside from their originals, which make them a great band to say the least, The Grateful Dead are one of the best cover bands ever. They played everything.

Speaking of Fusion I'm still trying to find Emergency! by Tony Williams anyone have it? It's supposed to have the most amazing drumming ever and he was Eric Dolphy's drummer for awhile and John McLaughlin is the guitarist. I mean that's a formula for greatness!

Yeah I never really expected a tour, for those reasons, and that Waters is very busy with different solo projects so once hes done with his oprea we might see a Waters tour.

The Dead's cover of Amazing Grace was one of my favorites done by both forms the Grateful Dead.

Lunch 08-02-2005 09:09 PM

When I said "The Dead" earlier I meant The Grateful Dead.

Woodstock 08-02-2005 09:19 PM

Btw, In A Silent Way > Bitches Brew.

And now I have three Coltrane albums. Giant Steps, Blue Train, and A Love Supreme.

Classic rock is cool though.

I spent this evening at the beach. I was swimming and hanging out, and some guys were playing guitar out of the back of their truck. They had set of a little jam, and one had a harmonica. They played "Heart Of Gold" by Neil Young, which wa really cool.

Badmoon 08-02-2005 09:51 PM

noice
