So for the past hour or so I've been looking at University courses.

I need to actually decide what to do with my life, looks like either Strathclyde, Glasgow Caley, Manchester or Newcastle i'ma going to.

Untitled 01-16-2007 05:02 PM

What course you wanting to do?

fortyseven 01-16-2007 05:02 PM

EDIT: Beat :(

Dead Star 01-16-2007 05:05 PM

Computer and Electronic Engineering, or just Computer Engineering itself.

I do Computer Science at Manchester.

It aint that bad.

Untitled 01-16-2007 05:09 PM

Yeah, manchester is very good for computing, seeing as the worlds first computer was invented here.

But i know fuk all except art/design courses.
What do you do etc?
I'm in my first year, just finished my first semester. Before Christmas I had 25 hours a week in department doing 5 modules.

The modules were...
Object Orientated Java - Basically Java programming from the bottom up.
Mathematical Techniques for Computer Science - Discrete maths eg logic, bit of probability too (continued in 2nd semester)
A Computational Model - We study the ARM instruction set, basically learning to program in a much lower level language and understanding how the processor executes tasks using memory and registers.
The Underlying Machine - Introduction to computer design, it looks more at the hardware side of things, 3 box model, logic gates and stuff. Communications.
Group Project - starts off as ethicial issues and a case study, then you have an idea for a project, present it, and make it using PHP and MySQL. We've got to make it this semester.

There's a fair few lectures. We have lab sessions to accompany the OOJ, Comp Mod, UM and Group project. There's also like examples classes which are a bit more personal, and then theres a tutor session once a week for the group project.

Errr... There's a fair bit of work to do and stuff, but if you keep on top of it it's not that bad.

That's a detailed list of all the course units that you can do and things.

Anything in particular you want to know?

fortyseven 01-16-2007 05:20 PM

Oh yeh. It's not a course to score chicks either.

Although, Psychology do have lectures in out main lecture theater twice a week ;)

Dead Star 01-16-2007 05:27 PM

Wow, cheers for that.

What were the entry requirements like?

They'll ask you for an interview, I was offered AAB, they gave one of my friends ABB, but usually it's just the standard university offer.

They let me in with BBB in Maths, Physics and History. There was a 10% drop in applicants last year though.

The interview isnt that bad, they'll have a bunch of people, start with a buffet lunch, couple of talks, tour the department, back in to talk to students and things, take so many people at a time for the interviews. You'll probably get to meet some of the people off our social committee, 'cause we're cool kids! They'll drag at least 2 of the 5 first year girls down as well.

The interviews arent anything tricky, they might ask you questions, but they dont expect you to have a huge bank of knowledge already, they'll ask you about your A levels, what you think you'll get, why you chose Manchester, what programming experience you have (that's only for reference), why you chose the course etc.

I had some guy that talked to me about violins and I play bass guitar and saxophone...

Yup, im doing art foundation there atm, so no loan, and my parents cant afford to pay my living costs to move out, so im commuting. I'm gonna specialise in 3d design at MMU though, live in halls there for a year, then see what happens.

Yeh, that's the problem one of the girls is having, she's doing a foundation but she cant afford to live here so she's back and forth.

The Met halls are pretty dire, but it's all about the experience really :)

I need to start looking for a house for next year. Not fun at all.

The thing is Highers are classed Differently to A Levels, so I don't actually know what I need.

Oh yeh, I forgot about that... If you check UCAS, it says...

Scottish Qualifications

Tariff Points and Grades

Tariff Score
Scottish Higher grade range AAABB
Scottish Advanced Higher grade range AAB

Higher

Acceptability Acceptable on its own & combined with other qualifications
Subjects and grades required Mathematics at grade B.

Additional Information Grades AAABB required including grade A in Mathematics at Higher or grades ABBBB including A in Mathematics at Higher and AAB at Advanced Higher, including B in Mathematics. A scientific bias to the other subjects studied.

Advanced Higher

Acceptability Acceptable only when combined with other qualifications

Thats me not going to Manchester Uni then.

fortyseven 01-16-2007 05:57 PM

Sorry kid!

Might be worth applying anyone as a long shot? Worst they can say is no...

Dead Star 01-16-2007 06:02 PM

I'll probably apply to most Unis anyway heh.

Untitled 01-16-2007 06:06 PM

If you apply threw UCAS you can only apply to 6.

I'd agree with this, the amount of people taking physical sciences beyond compulsory schooling has dropped yet again, and this has a knock on effect on the kind of grades you need to get onto Uni courses where subjects like Chemistry and Physics are preferred.

Dead Star, what subjects are you doing and what grades are you predicted? That might be helpful for looking at courses and stuff.
