Sean Reinert and Gene Hoglan are great Death Metal drummers. I don't know who the hell drums for Immolation but he is a great drummer also. Maybe I just don't like him as much as Hoglan or Reinert because Death is better than Immolation in my eyes.

99% of technical death metal sucks, I agree. For me I've never tended to like the really simple basic death metal either. I find the most technical bands in most cases to be the most laughable though.

In the death metal bands I like most like Necrophagist and Death there are progressive influences that come through that I like. Its not really the technical aspects I like as much as the more progressive, experimental music. Culinary Hyperversity is my favorite Necrophagist song, and its their simplist. The more technical Necrophagist and other bands like Meshuggah get, the more of a sacrifice there is in the quality of their songs.

Maybe I should check out some Nunslaughter again.

Thats where you're wrong.

There is nothing inherent among simple death metal bands that make them "better" than technical death metal, and vice versa. Just because a band playes a million notes a second doesn't mean they're more talented than a band that has a simpler approach. It all comes down to how good they can write songs, whether they're technical or not, and I think we can all agree on that.


I've heard my fair share of technical death metal wankery, thats why I really only like four bands in the whole genre.

I wish people would avoid blanket statements. Simplicity and technicality both have their place in death metal, and everybody in this thread has leaned either way at some point.

it's about what goal you're trying to achieve

for death metal that sounds like it's played by aliens going through hyperspace get origin or ulcerate

for death metal written by serial killers for serial killers get autopsy or macabre

for death metal written by SATAN HIMSELF get incantation or nunslaughter

there's not one death metal "archetype" that's inherently better than the rest of them, just good and bad bands
