i need bass lessons
What is it that you're looking to learn?

fatbandit 08-13-2009 07:34 PM

bass

fatbandit 08-13-2009 07:37 PM

Need to get my technique up to scratch for when we record. The album is going to be perfect, and I'm not going to be the one to let it down. I've been playing for 6 years and never had a lesson, and there are some glaring inconsistencies in my technique and my execution.

It'd also just get me playing more, and I need some inspiration to get me out of the same old ruts, and write better bass parts. The guy that came up to buy my Conklin, and the bassist in a band I saw last night just wee all over my playing, and it has been a bit of a wake up call. Everything I do at the moment seems to be borne out of root, fifth, octave, and the same major scale/arpeggio patterns. I know I'm better than that.

Spaceman Spiff 08-13-2009 07:48 PM

I see. Well, if you haven't, try running through different scales at different intervals. Such as:
1 3 2 4 3 5 4 6 5 7 6 8
1 4 2 5 3 6

etc etc

It might give you some new ideas for playing different notes at different times, switching up the old root-fifth-octave.

funkyhoney 08-13-2009 08:27 PM

Yeah I know right, that's what I said when I met her when she was still like 15.

Sammy_L_D 08-13-2009 08:57 PM

Sup. Anything good?

funkyhoney 08-13-2009 09:04 PM

I'm trying to figure out what I want to call the blog I'm going to start about my little journeys with the band. Entertaining and informative, genius.

Plus it's a motivation point for me to write more often.

Plus our EP came back yesterday.

Are you guys gonna set it up for mp3 sale?

funkyhoney 08-13-2009 09:13 PM
Are you guys gonna set it up for mp3 sale?
As in via iTunes? Or just in a data form?

I'm not to sure, I wouldn't mind doing that except we're still building our actual website so it may have to wait.

gaslight 08-13-2009 09:14 PM

**** iTunes man, Apple are the devil.

Look at a CD Baby account for mp3 sale, I'm looking at that for selling my bands' songs in the not too distant future. I wouldn't be keen on them for selling physical copies because it's pointless shipping something to America in order for it to be shipped back to Australia but their online mp3 sales look like a solid choice.

Is it difficult to set up?

gaslight 08-13-2009 09:30 PM

Nah not particularly man. The one thing you might have to do is send them a physical copy for them to rip and put up and pay an account set-up fee but after that you should be golden. I'll let you know how it goes if I end up doing it first.

funkyhoney 08-13-2009 09:33 PM

Hrmm, I will have to look into this. We're probably going to go to some independent record stores in town and see if they want a few copies on their shelves. Only trouble is it'll most likely be consignment.

funkyhoney 08-13-2009 09:36 PM

Hrmm after the small amount of research I've done in the last 47 seconds they keep a $4 sum from every sale. That'd make albums OK but we're selling our EP at $10 for a hard copy, so say $5 for a digital DL and that's $1 a unit, less than we paid for them.

:amaze: 08-13-2009 10:22 PM

10$ for a 5 song EP? that's kinda steep.

They don't keep $4 from every download, just every hard copy. Don't use them for hard copies.

For downloads they keep 25% or 29c, whichever is greater, per sale.

So if you sell your EP online as mp3s for $7.50US all together, they keep $1.87US and you get the rest.

That $4 a unit is why I wouldn't use them for physical copies. Bands should sell their hard copies direct from themselves only.

This is Australian dollars, not your weird money.

I really don't see how it's that bad, albums can sell for up to $30 and sometimes they only have 10/11 songs.

People seem to be happily buying them, and I don't really think $2 a song plus a nice case and design to help support a local band they enjoy is asking too much.

funkyhoney 08-13-2009 10:43 PM

Oh ok I must've misread.

I think $5 is reasonable for 5 tracks digital DL, that's iTunes price more or less.

gaslight 08-13-2009 10:55 PM

If you're a local band, $10 is fine for an EP retail. At shows, maybe knock a bit off it 'cause they've paid to get in. I'd sell an album direct for $15AUD in Australia, even though I grew up paying retail like $25 an album. Getting 100% of $15 beats getting like 5% of $25.

Even getting to keep $15 per album, in a four piece band that's slim pickings each once you factor in the cost of recording and production.

People who don't want to support local bands, they can go to hell.

funkyhoney 08-13-2009 11:01 PM

Even if we sold all our 1000 unit for exactly $10 we'd barely break even on recording and production.

gaslight 08-13-2009 11:11 PM

Hectic man. Don't expect to break even on recording on the first run. Remember that paying for manufacture, you bought 1000 physical units to sell, so if they pay off their own manufacture that's what counts. You can then make and sell more, which will chip away at the recording costs.

Jimbobntnr 08-13-2009 11:15 PM

I'll buy one when you get them somewhere.

TimJim 08-13-2009 11:15 PM

Pretty much, either way, I'm happy just knowing we have something good and it's out there.

gaslight 08-13-2009 11:34 PM

Yeah, that has to be enough at the end of the day.
Even if we sold all our 1000 unit for exactly $10 we'd barely break even on recording and production.
but 1000 people would have your album and that is more important

funkyhoney 08-14-2009 01:00 AM

Exactly :)

gaslight 08-14-2009 01:23 AM

That is true, but whenever money is involved in things you do need to know when to you have your business hat on, and when to have your artist hat on.

HaVIC5 08-14-2009 09:12 AM

Expecting to turn a profit selling albums isn't very realistic in the short run for a new band. Like gaslight was implying, its probably going to take more than 1000 units sold in order to make any sort of money, but its not that bad, because after 1000 you're just paying for the manufacture versus the recording/production costs.

gaslight 08-14-2009 09:40 AM

A good approach is to count your physical sales vs physical production and count your mp3 sales vs the recording cost seeing as mp3 sales have a minimal cash outlay to establish.

gaslight 08-14-2009 09:43 AM

about 1/4th of that would be too much imo

gaslight 08-14-2009 10:43 AM

Only 15 ever being made I guess I they didn't want leftovers.

Left Shoe 08-14-2009 11:12 AM
