So, I want a chin-up bar in my house but I can't screw one into a door frame or anything else because we rent.

Using the collective powers of your thinking, what solutions are available?
Workout World etc, have ones that you can use without screws. They're telescopic so you take them down after use.

I made this:
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=82332&l=52f58&id=733247032

But what you could use is two short lengths 2x4, one on each side of the top of the door frame. Held in place with G clamps done up really tight. Then, rig the chin-up bar off them.

Aaron 02-02-2009 11:25 PM

I wish I was a brown bear.

I asked at a gym equipment store about those a while back but they warned me off them as unsafe. When I first heard about it I was stoked though.

You made your own bouldering wall? Amazing. :chug:

And that's also a pretty sharp solution. I'll definitely look into that.

Aaron is our resident methlete.

Aaron 02-02-2009 11:36 PM

I like to play.

gaslight 02-02-2009 11:37 PM

Haha. So Chris, just confirming, a good set of properly done up C/G clamps would safely hold my body weight? I'm about 80kg after a good meal.

Chu 02-02-2009 11:48 PM

That's a very impressive effort Chris. Good job.

By the way, I added you on Facebook.

Aes820 02-02-2009 11:48 PM

Well I'm no engineer. But it should hold. Provided you don't bounce around on them, like some people do when they chin-up.

Your body weight would be taken by both the friction of the clamps holding the 2x4 against the wall above the door, plus by the 2x4 sitting on top of the door skirting boards (which by themselves should be able to hold a decent amount of weight).

It may not be ideal tho. Because you'll have to take it all down if you want to shut the door. Maybe the shed/garage would be better.

The thing about not being able to drill because you're renting sucks. It's not like it's hard to patch a hole in gyprock.

Aaron 02-02-2009 11:50 PM

I am 92kg of lovin'

gaslight 02-02-2009 11:51 PM

Excellent dude. It's actually pretty convenient because there are a few doorways in this house without the doors installed.

And yeah, oath to that, landlords are bogus.

gaslight 02-02-2009 11:52 PM
I am 92kg of lovin'
McLovin?

Chu 02-02-2009 11:53 PM

gas how tall are you? Approaching the 6 foot?

gaslight 02-02-2009 11:54 PM

I'm about 5'11" in the devil's reckoning.

Chu 02-02-2009 11:55 PM

I put forward the idea, we are very similar in build.

Aaron 02-02-2009 11:56 PM

I am McLovin'

I actually have that written next to me on my wall at work.

Aes820 02-02-2009 11:58 PM

Cool man. See how you go. But take it easy. It would suck to knock your arse out with a G clamp falling on you.

I found out before long that that single air matress under the woody just isn't enough. A decent fall and you go straight through it. Hip meets pavers.
So I've now got three air matresses.

Chu 02-03-2009 12:00 AM

You know, I actually didn't know why there was an air mattress in the completed photo.

But that seems so obvious now.

gaslight 02-03-2009 12:03 AM

Quite possibly we are Chu, I just measured, I'm 183 cm. I'm not built but not too skinny and I see unable to change that no matter how much I eat or (don't) exercise.

Chris, would it be better to get like a foot thick crash mat like they have in gymnastics or something?

I probably won't build this contraption for two or three weeks but I'll post pics when it's done.

$$$ !

Plus. They are a bugger to store when you're not using them. Air mattresses fold down to nothing.

Chu 02-03-2009 12:19 AM

I'm ****ing skinny, but I eat so much food, by all accounts I should be ****ing huge.

I definitely don't do exercise, and any muscle I have has come from guitar, and there's not a lot of it.

gaslight 02-03-2009 12:28 AM

Ah heavy, I guess unless a gymnastics centre goes bankrupt you can't really snatch one up cheap.

How about if the bouldering wall would overhang a pool? Now that'd be sick.

Chu 02-03-2009 12:30 AM

Yeah, but splash damage could be degrading.

gaslight 02-03-2009 12:33 AM

Waterproof bouldering wall then.

Chu 02-03-2009 12:36 AM

Well, in that case, why not make a dome cover for the pool, and you climb on the inside of it. Would be pretty hectic at the top!

gaslight 02-03-2009 12:37 AM

Now that would be something. I might have a job teaching like beginner guitar soon.

Chu 02-03-2009 12:39 AM

Nice, tax free income :chug:

gaslight 02-03-2009 12:45 AM

Yeah, it's at a music school but it's cash money I hear.

Meatplow 02-03-2009 12:52 AM

the back door has a bit of a jamb i can grip

gonna start doing chin-ups with my regular exercise, problem is i got no strength at all and can't even do one. I can at least exercise those muscles pulling myself up and down though

I_WEAR_RED_PANTS 02-03-2009 01:13 AM

Aaron i can't get it on my computer, is that all your stuff?

gaslight 02-03-2009 01:22 AM

My ideal exercise set up would be like two height adjustable bars that I could chin up/upside down crunch and stuff off of.

big80smullet 02-03-2009 01:26 AM

i can do like 3 chin ups. im like 100kgs

gaslight 02-03-2009 01:29 AM

I can do a few, but the only place I can try them is on like door frames at uni and that which isn't ideal because you only get to grip with your finger tips/right on the knuckle joint as opposed to a proper hand grip. Also to that fear or rust and nails, and having someone walk by and think you're a complete spaz.

I_WEAR_RED_PANTS 02-03-2009 01:29 AM

i can do 8 and i'm 107kg. but then again, i'm pretty much taller than the bar

Thailand and Mallorca are good for that.

True, aye

gaslight 02-03-2009 01:38 AM

Haha, I suppose you could try holding onto the bar, and bending your knees at a right angle to knock your height off a bit.

Chu 02-03-2009 01:40 AM

Chris, are you interested in Parkour?
