Against Miik! 08-22-2004 09:04 PM

Well, I don't think they are overrated or anything. Hardly ever mentioned by noobs in this thread.
Actually, it's not good that we keep returning to the same topic to talk about the same stuff over again. This Allman Brothers talk is getting old.
Actually whenever we bring up The Allman Brothers, great discussion arises. Because we all pretty much love them, we know there music. And the discussion easily connects to Gov't Mule, and our love for their guitarists.

But they have been brought up about a dozen times and it's the same discussion the same time about how the Allman Brothers are great. I get the idea, they are great, now let's move on!
You guys want to play the song line game? Because your right, we would just end up on CSN&Y in a few pages.
CSNY is probably a once in 4000 posts discusion unless there's some news.

The allman brothers is for any time :)

By the way, what's a good gov't mule starter album?

jpj 08-22-2004 09:19 PM

Does anybody have anything bad to say about them? I really don't think you can. There songs are catchy. They obviously have skill. What else can I say?

PinkFloyd 08-22-2004 09:33 PM

^ Not much else.

StreetlightRock 08-22-2004 09:46 PM

PinkFloyd 08-22-2004 11:42 PM

BOC have like 3 good songs :/ .

InChains 08-23-2004 12:14 AM

rock is something so great and beautiful, it will never die! there will always be classic rock influence like led zeppelin, queen, doors, ect.

Seafroggys 08-23-2004 12:32 AM
BOC have like 3 good songs :/ .
Hmmm, by that I assume you mean the only three songs people tend to know about: Reaper, Godzilla, Burnin' (in short hand).

Out of those Godzilla is the best, but I've heard stuff that can bury these. Yeah, I unfortunately have their greatest hits CD, and have heard two of my dad's LPs (Agents of Fortune and Fires of Unknown Origins) which both were okay.

But I must say that their pre-Reaper stuff kicked extraordinary ***. Cities on Flame, Flaming Telepaths, and Astronomy....oh my god! Especially Astronomy, one of the single greatest rock ballads of all time. Even some of the later seventies stuff was pretty decent that know one knows about (In Thee, Black Blade).

However, I must admit after Albert Bouchard was kicked out, they really started making ****ty music.

Anyway, I don't see whats really great about Don't Fear the Reaper (except that middle heavy section was pretty cool). But BOC does have plenty of hidden gems. Plenty. I plan on getting Secret Treaties as soon as I have CD money again.
The Wall is an autobiography of Roger Waters. The only thing involving Barret were his traits that were insparation for many of the characteristics of the central character, Pink.
I'm still reading through the thread but I felt the need to reply to this.
The wall is not an autobiography despite the underlying similarities between waters and Pink.

True. Pink is a fictional composite of Waters and Syd.

BludgeonySteve 08-23-2004 01:13 PM

That's what I said (somewhere). Waters and Syd both wrote songs on the wall. They both wrote it from personal experience and waters (being the genius he is) sort of fused their lives together to make pink.

I'm sort of confused about te empty spaces message thing. Is syd old pink? :amaze:

Yeah. he went crazy, which is what the 'funny farm' thing is about. he had a daily acid habit. not healthy. he started going catatonic on stage, playing simple chords, totally unrelated material, or not playing at all.

BludgeonySteve 08-23-2004 02:00 PM

Right then :)

Syd helped write songs on The Wall?

BludgeonySteve 08-23-2004 02:17 PM
Syd helped write songs on The Wall?
Well, he didn't quite help but there were some songs or song ideas of syds that waters used when writing the wall.

So he deserves some credit.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I offer you this:

The Top 500 Rock And Roll Songs

This list got me into to Classic Rock today. Since I don't use P2P devices, I'm gradually assembling as much of this as I can through CDs. I've got 229 of them so far and I haven't disliked a single song.

For reference, you can make fun of me for using a list, but all of these songs are solid gold and I make sure to listen to whatever else comes with the CDs I buy. For example, Mary Jane's Last Dance (Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers) and Higher Power (Boston) aren't on the list, but they're pretty awesome too.

I think the fact that this thread is so huge is a testament to how great Classic Rock is.

Woodstock 08-23-2004 02:34 PM

I agree with most of that list, a first.

But not the #1 song

BludgeonySteve 08-23-2004 03:06 PM
I agree with most of that list, a first.

I don't think it really matters if people don't agree with number one. It would be very hard to pick a number one that everybody agrees with. Stairway to heaven is the ideal number one song because nobody's going to say "why the hell is that there?"

A I agree with most of that list. Tons of great music on there. though a serious lack of allman brothers. 5 songs out of 500? Somebody's gonna get hurt.
