Yeah, MoP is way too... mechanical for my liking. I don't know, the music just sounds like it was written by robots. It goes beyond clockwork, and just lacks any sort of emotion for me.
I feel the same way about AJFA. Their only albums I like are the rawest ones, KEA and RTL.

2muchket! 08-11-2006 11:24 AM

RTL is an amazing album because of Fade to Black and Call of the Ktulu.

Nepenthe 08-11-2006 11:25 AM

I think AJFA has a good amount of emotion in it though. Blackened, AJFA, One, Frayed Ends Of Sanity, To Live Is To Die, and Dyers Eve all have a good deal of emotion put into them.

pate 08-11-2006 11:26 AM

I don't feel a whole lot of emotion in Blackened, AJFA, or Frayed Ends of Sanity, though of course I do in One, TLITD, and Dyers Eve.

Jaundice 08-11-2006 11:27 AM

I personally think Blackened, AJFA and Frayed Ends of Sanity are some of their best songs. I can see how someone wouldn't see much emotion in them.

But One and Dyer's Eve are undeniably some of Metallica's most emotional cuts.

DaveTheAmazing 08-11-2006 11:30 AM

Imo..

AJFA>MOP>RTL>KEA,

I would also accept..

MOP>AJFA>RTL>KEA

though i wouldnt understand why one would think..

RTL>KEA>MOP>AJFA

but we can all be sure that..

Load>Rtl

amirite? :smoke:

pate 08-11-2006 11:30 AM

I think Blackened is an excellent song, one of my favorite Metallica songs, but it just seems very mechanical.

@DavetheAmazing: I go RTL>KEA>AJFA>MOP, and I don't give two shits whether you accept it or not. Good day, sir!

Jaundice 08-11-2006 11:31 AM

Yeah, that's basically what I was getting at. Some of AJFA... is just really mechanical sounding. I don't have a problem at all with it, though.

Nepenthe 08-11-2006 11:33 AM

I think Blackened is just technical. There's a difference between mechanical and technical. MoP has a mechanical sound to me, while AJFA has a technical one.
I don't feel a whole lot of emotion in Blackened, AJFA, or Frayed Ends of Sanity, though of course I do in One, TLITD, and Dyers Eve.
No emotion in Frayed Ends?! What?!?! The Frayed Ends of Sanity is one of the most crushingly melancholic and outrageously powerful showcases of emotion I have ever heard!

Nepenthe 08-11-2006 11:36 AM
No emotion in Frayed Ends?! What?!?! The Frayed Ends of Sanity is one of the most crushingly melancholic and outrageously powerful showcases of emotion I have ever heard!
While possibly a bit of an exaggeration, he's right.

pate 08-11-2006 11:36 AM

It's powerful, yes, but it doesn't come across as being emotional, to me.

Jaundice 08-11-2006 11:38 AM

It's powerful and emotional, but I can see how it wouldn't come off as emotional. The emotion is there, it's just not upfront like with One or Fade to Black or something of the sort.

Nepenthe 08-11-2006 11:38 AM

The chorus is especially emotional.

It's good to finally see this thread having a discussion that isn't just "--- > --- > --- > --- > --- >"

pate 08-11-2006 11:41 AM

I'm listening right now, and I just don't feel it. And it doens't have to be a ballad for it to come across as emotional to me (I'm sure someone was wondering). I find plenty of it in Dyers Eve and To Live is To Die.

Do you guys think the title track is extremely emotional? I would place it lower than Frayed Ends on the emotional scale.

Nepenthe 08-11-2006 11:43 AM

I find it emotional, but not extremely emotional. The emotion that I get from Blackened, AJFA, and Frayed Ends comes from the lyrics and James' singing. You can truly hear the hate in Blackened and AJFA, and you can hear the insanity and longing in Frayed Ends.

pate 08-11-2006 11:45 AM

Hmmm. I guess I'm emotionally deprived. :)

Nepenthe 08-11-2006 11:46 AM

Must be the case.

DaveTheAmazing 08-11-2006 12:42 PM

"Insanity and longing" is a good way of putting it. I think the reason you can't see it is because its not the kinda emotion you can just tag as "happy" or "sad" or "angry" or "excited". It is actually quite subtle, but its definetly there.

Edit: Yes, my "The Frayed Ends of Sanity is one of the most crushingly melancholic and outrageously powerful showcases of emotion I have ever heard!" comment was kind of an exaggeration

No it's played through the PA, then the band start after the backwards guitar stops.
