Snarz 01-25-2007 07:21 PM

Is it normal that they have three holes on the bottom hat?Becasue I've seen alot of them doso im guessing yes.

And sound wise any good?

Tim 01-25-2007 07:54 PM

soudn wise they will sound excellent. the holes on the bottom are to prevent airlock and make them quicker.
Im looking for the crash cymbal from the band 'ambry'.
an example would be from their song 'better scene than heard'
ok thanks.
anyone know?

FL3P 01-26-2007 12:53 PM

I listened to the song but there isnt anything special about the sound of that crash. I would suggest going to a music store and finding something that sounds similar or that you like. No need to go on a mission to find that exact crash, it sounds like a million others.

byrkee 01-26-2007 07:38 PM

oh i thought it sounded a lot better than anything i heard.

Little Android Man 01-26-2007 07:45 PM

then you havent heard a lot..

FL3P 01-26-2007 08:07 PM

It sounds good but I dont think its a sound that many cymbals couldnt give you. Im sure if you found the cymbal somewhere and hit it your first thought would be "that doesnt sound like the one on that song".

byrkee 01-27-2007 11:29 AM

ok thanks.

FL3P 01-27-2007 11:30 AM

Do you know what brand he uses?

byrkee 01-27-2007 11:39 AM

well i watched a couple of their live performances, and his cymbals had a big Z on it, so im guessing its zidjilan(spelling?),even though it doesnt have the usual written out label on it.

FL3P 01-27-2007 11:52 AM

Those would be Z Customs then and thats probably not what he used in the studio nor what you would want to use at home or for smaller venues.

byrkee 01-27-2007 04:14 PM

oh.

ant_182 01-31-2007 01:11 AM

You might like the Z Customs. Try them out :) I really didn't want to try the Z crash out. But I did and loved it!

Stickman Sam 01-31-2007 12:24 PM

Righty-O, finally saved up some cash, so I'm gonna upgrade my cymbals. After a cursory glance at the available options, my first impression was to go XS20 - The performance set and also the splash/chinese set. I've only played a crash from the set, but it was a nice little thing.

Anyone who has these cymbals, comments?

Now for the reason this is in the cymbal finder thread:

Hats - A bit dry, fast, light
Ride - I don't want much sustain; main things are a cutting, kinda industrial bell sound and a low decay time.
Crash - Short decay, but cutting, and something that sounds good at medium-high volumes.

Any suggestions?

~~

EDIT: I have about £550 available to me, but am looking to put £150 of that towards new snare drum.

herostyle 01-31-2007 01:00 PM

I have the 10" splash. It sounds great for the price. I recommend getting it.

gimp fest 02-01-2007 02:28 PM

hi, i can't decide between these crashes:

16" A custom med and 18" 2002 full
16" full and 17" A custom med.

anyone?

Snarz 02-01-2007 02:47 PM

16" A Custom Medium.

Seafroggys 02-01-2007 03:00 PM

the 18" 2002 Full.

ant_182 02-01-2007 04:12 PM

16 is toooo small :P 17" A Custom Med. 18" 2002 full

stevensonmat2 02-01-2007 05:41 PM

Size doesn't matter, sound does. The 16" has a great tone imo. You can hear the cymbal say "crassssshhh".

Little Android Man 02-01-2007 05:57 PM

id go 17". i like the sound better than the 16"

DW_ 02-01-2007 11:24 PM

I need a new crash that will go decently with a 19'' Sabian AAX dark crash. Something generally for harder stuff, but still versatile. Thanks

Tim 02-02-2007 05:14 AM

18inch AAX stage crash?

ant_182 02-02-2007 12:09 PM

Yes, size does matter. I prefer the sound of larger crashes(that I've heard) :) I might get a smaller K Custom or A Custom later though

stevensonmat2 02-02-2007 02:22 PM

I guess that was kind of a dumb thining to say in retrospekt :P

drummguy731 02-02-2007 06:17 PM

byrkee 02-02-2007 09:41 PM

i meant like a link to a sound sample of the z custom.

drummguy731 02-02-2007 09:48 PM

It's called a lil effort, geez.

http://zildjian.com/en-US/products/default.ad2?catalogID=1012

Now find what you want from there.

byrkee 02-03-2007 03:45 PM

oh, i got to those pages and everything, but i didnt find the sound sample part off to the side, but i just found it, ok thanks.

Ollie The Drumming Legend 02-04-2007 04:35 AM

Hey there. I'm looking for a 2nd crash for my drum kit. It's a Mapex Pro M 22/10/12/14 with 12" snare, and the cymbals I have already are 13" A custom mastersound hats, 17" A custom projection crash, 20" K custom dry ride. I also have a 16" Stagg medium crash, but I want to get a better one. Ideally a bit less powerful and shorter decay (less sustain) than the projection crash, with a different sound that fits but is also fairly contrasting (higher or lower in pitch). So far I have looked on the Sabian website to get an idea of what is out there sound-wise, and briefly I have considered the following:

AAX - 16" dark, 15"/16" studio, 16" stage
AA - 16" sound control, 17" fast.

I play in a rock band, so it has to be loud (etc) enough to be heard and sound good in rock, but any cymbal has to be versatile enough to play in other styles as my band isn't all that serious and it's not going to be around forever, so good for playing alone too, hence not having a bigger crash as the 17" projection is rather powerful indeed.

Also, I don't want anything too thin that is going to break easily as although I take care I sometimes hit fairly hard (+ my brother can be a bit of a noob when playing my drums + hits them very hard, so I've put my current crashes at really slanted angles that are a bit awkward for me to play otherwise he hits the edges).

Secondly, I'm thinking of a 2nd ride or crash/ride, as the K custom dry ride is sex and great for grooving but it isn't very loud, has little wash, can't easily be crashed to build wash&volume, and has dark&low over/undertones that mean it doesn't cut through very well. So I was thinking about something with a little less wash than a 21 A sweet ride, possibly a 20 or 22 A custom/A ride/medium ride, or a K custom 'normal' ride, with wash&some crashing ability (inc. using the side of the stick on the body of the ride) but also stick definition and definitely louder than than what I already have.

Although all my (decent) cymbals are currently Zildjian, I don't have a preference for brands at all. Sabian AA/X are cheaper than A&K/custom, but about £20 or £30 but I'd always go for sound rather than price if I'm spending over £100 anyway. Though I did rule out HH etc as they're damn expensive.

I also have a Meinl Classics 20" ping ride, but no stand for it - so any ride would have to be preferable to that.

Thank you in advance for your helpful advice and for taking time to help fellow drummers. :) (++rep as an incentive for good advice).

Zildjian 02-04-2007 09:51 AM

You sir want A customs or 2oo2's for the crash

and Avedis 20" Medium for that good crash and good ride

FL3P 02-04-2007 09:58 AM

AS far as Zildjian stuff goes I would say a 16" regular A Custom crash would do. It would be a higher pitch with a shorter sustain but being an A Custom it will still be durable and cut through.

Snarz 02-04-2007 12:52 PM

Anybody got any opinions on the 16" A Custom Fast Crash and Medium Crash?

Static 02-04-2007 01:00 PM

I played a Fast Crash yesterday. Pretty good, sounds really nice with a full kit.

Very versatile. Very bright.

FL3P 02-04-2007 01:05 PM

The fast crashes are nice, pretty much like the regulars without the sustain. I always find the medium crashes hard to describe but they fit right in between the regular and the projection. I found them to have a unique tone that you have to hear for yourself.

ant_182 02-05-2007 03:04 PM
link please.
No, try them yourself. The cymbal sound clips don't do cymbals justice IMO
