Well there ya go.

Surf 10-20-2006 07:37 PM

you were right, both what you and storm in a tea cup were free verse, but not free writing, which is what sixstringking said was without themes, often the exact opposite, being an intense dwelling on one subject.

there were some good lines in those few stanzas you posted; but there's a bit of cliche in there as well....

TheBigMachine 10-20-2006 07:38 PM

I agree. Like I said, Im still editing, I might get it up one day...

slack 10-20-2006 07:57 PM
He's a pretty good guy.
Most people hate him.

SixStringKing 10-20-2006 08:01 PM

your right.. that is free VERSE what he did was free WRITE

Surf 10-20-2006 08:09 PM

....

i re-iterate
free writing is often a means to an end; a method of renewing interest and ideas, though sometimes used for therapeutic purposes. it entails forgoing conscious thought, allowing the pen/your hand to write, without any thought as to what you are writing. the moment you break from this, and start correcting/applying structure or modifying it in any way, you are no longer free-writing.
his piece was clearly not free written, nor is free writing anything to do with the idea of not having a theme; it is a method of writing, rather than a thematic approach

TheBigMachine 10-20-2006 08:16 PM

Surf knows his stuff. Are you doing literature in uni or something?

Surf 10-20-2006 08:24 PM

English at Exeter University, down south of england. its in the top twenty unis in the uk, and there's alot of posh kids who didn't get into oxford/cambridge. I'm in my first year: reading beowulf at the moment, translated by seamus heaney and its pretty darn good. however, we also look at literary critcism and relevant theories. russian formalism is more interesting than it sounds.

to be honest, there's an essay i could be doing right now, but i'm devouting every waking hour to avoid having to write it. and its two in the morning and i actualy need to sleep. good night s&l.

TheBigMachine 10-20-2006 08:44 PM

Goodnight surf. All sounds very interesting and what not.

TojesDolan 10-21-2006 04:48 PM

free writing means no structural focus, not just writing everything that comes to your mind. I agree with Surf at that.

TheBigMachine 10-22-2006 02:32 AM

I feel like some tofu now.

TojesDolan 10-22-2006 03:26 AM

Munchies amirrite

Surf 10-22-2006 07:37 AM

urrite

Nightvision 10-22-2006 10:40 AM

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... I just ate far too much.

I really should actually do some critting some day - it just seems to be every time I'm in here I just can't find anything that I can say something about that will help the writer. :-/

TojesDolan 10-22-2006 11:12 AM

Yeah, that's my goal as well.

Surf 10-22-2006 11:31 AM

Yeah, that's my goal as well.

slack 10-22-2006 11:47 AM

me too, gice

pixiesfanyo 10-22-2006 11:51 AM

i don't have any goals.

just like to live.

Surf 10-22-2006 11:53 AM

's a good goal

Nightvision 10-22-2006 11:54 AM

Hey, I didn't say it was my goal... my goal is to wangle myself a three-way with Keira Knightley and Kate Beckinsdale, but in the absence of that, I'll settle for two other attractive 20-something females.

Minus The Flair 10-22-2006 12:48 PM

Just finished my first weekend of work and my feet hurt. Like loads. 16 hours over 2 days on the busiest days since last xmas is hard work, especially as a first job. Ah well, lots of money.

And for whoever asked, yes, Waterstones do do a 10% student discount.

Surf 10-22-2006 07:54 PM

threads need a-closing:

one's just stupid and the other isn't his own lyrics.

TheBigMachine 10-23-2006 02:49 AM

They should both be banned for crimes against humanity.

I saw this and thought I'd clicked L&R on mistake.

couple more weeks and you'll start to get into the groove of things. after about three months of washing dishes i could just switch off and function on auto pilot. the money should ease things along until then...

Minus The Flair 10-23-2006 12:26 PM

Yeh, thats exactly what I heard from one of the people that works with me. For a couple months she dreaded coming in, then something just clicked and everything became simple and easy. I hope that comes round for me, because that weekend was hard.

pixiesfanyo 10-23-2006 12:35 PM

punk forum can go suck a lemon

TheBigMachine 10-24-2006 05:40 AM

Imagine the facial expressions. It'd make for a pretty punk rawk band photo, to be true.

Surf 10-25-2006 12:22 PM

okay, community thread's looking a bit stale.

devils and dust was a great album, even if it did sound a bit dylanesque.
disscuss how good bruce springsteen is.

also, more people need to post in tojes' imagery thread, or those kind of ideas won't take off...
