not really. anyway, i need more power metal. i already like Edguy, DragonForce, CoB, Jag Panzer, Sabaton, Angra, Demons & Wizards, Iced Earth, Dream Evil, Helloween, Metal Church, Nightwish, Sonata Arctica, Rhapsody and Stratovarius, so what should i go for next?
Did i never lend you a galloglass album? |
Power Metal Rocks
last album was Blind Guardian- Live 2 Disc Rhapsody= really good Iced Earth= one of my fave bands Blind Guardian= see " Iced Earth" Sonata Arctica= bad *** and getting to be a fave Helloween= see " Blind Guardian"
Live is one of my favourite live albums ever. It's so bloody good, the 8 minute version of Valhallais just incredible. |
The only problem I have with it is the excessive crowd noise at the end of songs. 3 minutes at a time is far too much.
|
I almost bought Live a few weeks ago...maybe I should invest in it sooner or later.

I feel like debating so someone challenge me....
I don't think Iced Earth should be classified as Power Metal. 90% of the time the riffing is based in thrash. When there are leads which isn't extremely often compared to most Power Metal bands, such as Blind Guardian who's got a lead going all the time, they don't seem to be very "Power Metal esque" and remind me more of something Metallica would do. Both the riffing and lead sound A LOT more like Metallica than Dragonforce or really any other Power Metal band. As far as the vocals go I wouldn't exactly call them thrash but they seem way too low to be considered Power Metal, besides the occasional falsetto scream. Like Metallica they use a lot of acoustic interludes/intros and harmonizing, and have the occasional shred solo. I really think they should be classified as a Melodic Thrash Metal band much moreso than a Power Metal band. The only thing I could really see making them Power Metal would be the lyrics. Somebody prove me wrong I'm bored. |
I don't feel like debating, but listen to Exodus or Dark Angel and tell me Iced Earth sound only like thrash. It's a mixture of the two genres, and I myself would put them closer to the power metal side of things.
And the vocals, well, listen to Sabaton. |

I don't think Iced Earth should be classified as Power Metal. 90% of the time the riffing is based in thrash.
The riff emphasis is a part of Iced Earth's sound more as an influence from Kiss and AC/DC than Megadeth or Metallica. Notice also that Running Wild and Sabaton have riffs reminiscent of speed/thrash metal, but remain power metal.
When there are leads which isn't extremely often compared to most Power Metal bands, such as Blind Guardian who's got a lead going all the time, they don't seem to be very "Power Metal esque" and remind me more of something Metallica would do.
Not every song needs a solo. Jon Schaffer likes to experiment with a variety of song styles. Also, Metallica have confined themselves to the pentatonic their whole careers, while Iced Earth never met a scale they didn't like.
Both the riffing and lead sound A LOT more like Metallica than Dragonforce or really any other Power Metal band.
Once more I reference Sabaton and Running Wild. For fun, let's also throw in Nightwish and Tarot.
As far as the vocals go I wouldn't exactly call them thrash but they seem way too low to be considered Power Metal, besides the occasional falsetto scream.
Matt Barlow is a bass/baritone, true. But power metal does not require its singers to be exclusively tenors. Also, in the vocals department, power metal requires a much, much higher degree of musicianship than thrash does. The vocalist carries much more weight in a power metal band, whereas most thrash bands prefer to avoid having any other member distract from the guitarists that often.
Like Metallica they use a lot of acoustic interludes/intros and harmonizing, and have the occasional shred solo.
Metallica does not have a monopoly on that. That's an 80's thing. Listen to Dokken for example. |
Iced Earth are Power, with thrash influences.
They are influenced by the bay area thrash sound, but with Maiden and Priest influences too.
Also, Metallica have confined themselves to the pentatonic their whole careers, while Iced Earth never met a scale they didn't like.
Big H5 to that. |
Did i never lend you a galloglass album?
I don't think Iced Earth should be classified as Power Metal. Somebody prove me wrong I'm bored.
Lots of bands cross genres, and just becasue they don't sound like another band in a genre doesn't mean they shouldn't be classified in that way. Sometimes certain songs could slide into other genres as well. A lot of the bands I listen to could be considered power or prog... Angra, Labyrinth, etc.. I've seen Biomechanical classified as power metal and they sound more like metalcore to me... maybe their first album was power metal? I've seen A7X classified as power metal, maybe some stuff on City of Evil? Megadeth is definitely classified as thrash but listen to Risk and I don't think anyone can argue that it sure isn't too thrashy... |
Saw Biomechenical live a few weeks ago, and I don't see any Metalcore in it. It's more a Heavy metal band with Power/Prog metal influences.

power metal typically has clean vocals and the singer sounds a lot like Phil Anselmo and as a matter of fact the riffs sound a lot like Dimebag too  |
Eh the main singer of Biomechanical was doing more of a Blind Guardian powermetelesqe vocal preformance than a harsh scream both on cd and on stage.

Can anyone please reccomend me some ultra-cheesy epic fantasy power metal with lots of lyrics about fantasy stuff and keyboards and flutes and stuff? That kinda power metal is my favourite. Stuff sorta like Blind Guardian - Lord of the Rings
|
Would you consider Threshold as power metal? Or at least influenced by Power Metal.

Rhapsody. They do it better than anyone else.
Would you consider Threshold as power metal? Or at least influenced by Power Metal.
Not sure I'm familiar with them. Anywhere I could hear some samples? |
^^ Thanks man ive already got some of them can you reccomend some more bands?

Not sure I'm familiar with them. Anywhere I could hear some samples?
I remember listening to some songs by them a long time ago but didnt meet my criteria. You can download a song in their official site http://www.thinicestudios.com/threshold/download.htm |

Helloween Mystic Prophecy Human Fortress DragonForce Cryonic Temple Wuthering Heights That's all I can think of at the moment. None are quite as orchestral as Rhapsody, though. |
Thanks alot im gonna check these bands out now:)
|
I would say Elvenking as well. Maybe some plain viking/folk metal might work for you as well.
|
Well thanks for the insight but to the person who said take a look at Slayer I know what that sounds like, I was referring to Metallica because they are the most melodic thrash band their is, I was just saying Iced Earth sounds like a more modern fantasy version of them.

They're not even thrash anymore. The post-thrash scene is more melodic than them, also. And I believe Megadeth have more melody than Metallica simply because Dave Mustaine was able to get much more accomplished musicians. |
I think Kirk Hammet is the 2nd worst metal guitarist ever (behind Kerry King) and was by no means a good musician, and Metallica had terrible solos. Despite the fact, they did use lots of harmonizing and melodic passages.

Again, that was an 80's think. How many 80's bands can you think of that didn't do that? |
Slayer, Exodus (from what I've heard), Megadeth not nearly to the extent of Metallica, Testament also not to the extent of Metallica.
My point is lyrical themes shouldn't decide that Iced Earth is Power Metal when the music has little association with it. Even saying Thrash with Power Metal influences would be better than Power Metal with Thrash influences. |
