I never took lin. alg. formally so take my answers with a grain of salt, but:

a) if alpha is any real number other than 1/4, the system will have only a trivial solution

b) if alpha is 1/4, the system will have an infinite number of solutions

I'm not sure what they mean by general solution, but I'm guessing they want something like:

(x_1, x_2, x_3) = (-4alpha + 1, -16alpha + 4, -8alpha + 2)
