I've actually been giving out some positive rep recently.

BTW, what is the --rep crew's stance on neg-repping idiots that have under a hundred posts? I only neg rep idiots when I feel that they should know better.

[QUOTE=Steerpike]I've never been particularly impressed with Coheed and Cambria. Instrumentally, they have more going for them than some of their contemporaries, but I don't see the big deal some people make about them.[/QUOTE]

I guess they're pretty good riff-writers, although to me it seems like they chicken out on their guitar tone and their solos. And their vocals are just blaah. But I kind of like them song-subject-wise, it's totally pretentious prog nonsense, the songs they come up with.

In general, I feel like Coheed and Cambria are a musical baby-step back towards truly progressive and proficient rock music in much the same way American Wave of Metal is. They all have elements of that cool stuff, but then other elements prove that they are unwilling (or that their labels are unwilling) to have them go all the way. For instance, Coheed are successfully writing sprawling concept songs and the riffing is metal-tinged, but the majority of the harmonic choices and vocal stylings are firmly in the realm of pop-punk and popular emo.

No argument here, but keep in mind that when I say they're better than some of their contemporaries just what they have to be compared to. My Chemical Romance for example. Hell, a group like that makes David Lee Roth's solo career sound brilliant.

Cain, just out of curiosity, when did you start figuring out songs by ear? I just learned my first song that way, and I just would like to compare my progress with someone who I know kicks serious fetus*. :p

Hmmm...you know, I'm not entirely positive. I'm pretty sure I've been figuring songs out by ear ever since I had any proficiency at playing, but I've only become an ACCURATE ear transcriber by learning harmonic theory, relationships, and scales, and remembering which ones are used by which genre: after I knew all the basic scales and keys, figuring songs out by ear became mostly a process of elimination: "Ok, it's in this key, and it can only be these notes...oh wait, this one's a little weird, but it can't be far from this note, let's find it..." etc.

EDIT: I imagine, therefore, that my ear skills improved by year two and a half.

I have a question.

Why was the [img] code removed from the R&M forum?

I thought there was a pr0n incident here as well, but I don't know. I wondered that a few minutes ago.

More than likely a ******* thing. Thank goodness it is off.

NP: Legacy- Phil Keaggy

Anybody heard of this guitar player? He's been hailed by the likes of Jimi Hendrix as--no joke--the world's best guitar player.

He's certainly one of the best acoustic composers I've heard, and I hear he put out a few really mean blues-rock albums too.

Permanent Solution 10-25-2005 09:49 PM

Lucas: Late response but I own Good Apollo and it's a pretty good album, but their last album was better. I personally like the vocals fine as is. I also saw them Friday and I can say they put on one hell of a show. I think all their albums grow on you, and the vocals actually go well in there once you're accustomed to it.

EDIT: I've seen him live. That man can play guitar like no one else. Very talented. Very unknown too.

Dr. Jake Destructo 10-25-2005 09:49 PM

Sometimes I wish it was allowed to do the img thing, but more bad comes from it than good, especially on this big of a subforum.

It's a real shame too, this guy was playing [size=2]shi[/size]t that the better acoustic players I've heard still probably can't emulate. He has impeccable--and I mean impeccable--technique and an even more masterful compositional ear.

It's amazing how much talent slips under the public's radar. It's also disgraceful.

I've grown into a position where i can only learn a song with a powertab. Text tabs are just entirely too garbled for me, or something. :-/ Hopefully my newly acquired "learn by ear" skill will keep improving.

Learning by ear is a slow process, isn't it? It's getting easier for me to figure out certain chords and intervals, but I still can't seem to place individual notes or keys.

Was? Psh, still is. The man really is a great guitarist though, until you mentioned Hendrix respecting him though I didn't realize how old he was. He always looked younger on the CD covers I thought...oh well. My mom, who is usually a mainstream whore, is actually the one who introduced me to him oddly. He opened for a band we were seeing a few years ago. It was a very very good opening act hehe ;)

It is, but then sometimes it seems the best musicians have worse output with mainstream recognition, so meh.

I made my first .gif last night. It turned out very funny, and cheap. It's kind of an inside joke between me and my friends, but perhaps some of you Halo players will find it at least slightly amusing.

Okay, so I'd consider myself to be fairly well off in the brains department. This isn't really me being arrogant, it's just kind of fact. I am intelligent, and I unfortunately know this. I'm also blessed with a near photographic memory, and mild OBC tendencies.

Woo-hoo, I hear you say. If only I had that, I could breeze through high school. And yes, you could. I did probably 10% of the required homework throughout high school, including end of year study for exams. I graduated with As and Bs, and recieved an OP of 4, which is within the top 1% of the state.

Hell, even in primary school, I was considered a smart kid. In year 2, I derived the formula for the area of a triangle, from what we had been taught about squares. in year 7 I recieved a high distinction for Science (only 6 people (average) in Australia recieved that each year).

So, I gained entry into three different Universities, but declined Brisbane and Townsville due to a lack of money (I hadn't really expected to get in). So, I trundled off to my local Uni with high hopes. I told myself that playtime is over, and studying is the name of the game from now on. And I did study. About 40% of the coursework (hey it's an improvement!). Good on me. And I recieved credits or distinctions in all of my subjects.

Second semester of my first year was a bit different. Incidentally, I discovered the forums at this time. University was getting harder, and I wasn't studying any harder. I got my first pass, and nearly failed another subject, but pulled my finger out at the last minute.

So, I should have learned a lesson. But I didn't. Hell, I passed 1st year Biology after attending 1 lecture. And my mindset was so focused on "no study, no worries", that I doubt I can change it for more than a few days.

So, here I am, nearly ending my 2nd year of University. And I have the most dramas ever. I may end up failing some subjects. I've never repeated a subject, so I don't know what to do. I'm going to have to cover it up somehow, since my mother will flip if she sees the marks.

And despite all this worry, I still find it difficult to study.

Yet, the light at the end of the tunnel is that I can scrape the repeated subjects (hopefully only the one subject) into next year, and not effect my graduating date. Hopefully.

So yeah, I'm an idiot.

That hurts my feelings Jason. Deep deep down in the part of my soul I keep in a dark corner with razorblades, it hurts.

As to uni issues, I can't relate, luckily. I still don't do any more work than the minimal required for credit, and I still pull all A's and B's. I do an average of 4 hours of work outside of class per week I think. I'm sorry things aren't working out the same for you.

Dr. Jake Destructo 10-25-2005 10:35 PM

Riva, I feel your pain. I do so little in high school, as far as homework, that I am beginning to fear gett as[size=2]sraped[/size] in college, when that time comes.

As of yet, I've not done a single minute of AP Chemistry homework after 2 months of school, but I still have a 100%.

The great thing about AP is grades don't matter, and at the end of the day you have 100%, but while I got a B I'd be surprised if you beat my score on the test :p

I'm lucky enough to go to a college where it's easy to get by, as we don't have traditional grades, marks, majors, or even tests. The catch is, however, that you'll have completely wasted your college education if you just breeze through it. So it's really, really important to be self-motivated. The best part is that you'll realize that you're breezing by and you'll care about it, since marks aren't EVER a worry, in a sense. It's literally so easy in the end that if you care about your education, you'll feel guilty for doing nothing and get on top of yourself. My education is literally in my own hands and I need to have the presence of mind to stay on top of myself to work for what I want.

Unfortunately, I almost never do the required reading for any class. But I'm productive on my own independent projects besides. The bane of my education career, to be honest, is my tendency to be extremely productive in areas that don't fit with my chosen or required cirriculum. I may not be sitting on my *** drunk or playing video games all day, but even so, it gets difficult sometimes.

BTW: Jason, you're definitely not an idiot. I consider myself pretty intelligent too and the exact same thing happens to me. We've just got too many brilliant ideas on our mind to absorb new ones out of assignments and books. :p

EDIT: I got a 4 on the AP U.S. History exam. I admit I was a little disappointed, but they kept asking questions about the deadest parts of American history: namely, 1815-1845 and 1875-1910. And it was all about the political side of things.

Heh, I can relate to that. I spend most of my time thinking of the most abstract stuff, it's annoying. Like for example, what is the universe expanding into?

And what would happen if the speed of light slowed, and you stood in a dark room and switched on the light.
