I usually say avant-garde, sludge, doom, black, folk black, viking, death (including technical death metal), and post metal. I also say I listen to some hardcore, metalcore, and emo/screamo. The emo/screamo part usually ends up to a retarded discussion, because everyone except a select group of students know what emo or screamo means.

Kingofdudes 10-25-2005 07:48 PM

People around here dont get genres, I usually say i listen to rock and metal and a bit of trip hop.

Arrakakaka 10-25-2005 07:49 PM

Well, I have a tendancy to be exact with people. I usually explain to them the definition of genres, yet they look at me like; :amaze:

i am the robots 10-25-2005 07:50 PM

Haha, yeah, I normally get asked what the difference between all the goth music is. I normally just laugh.

My friends asked me to explain metal genres to them. First they asked what the difference between black and death metal was, and then what other genres there were...the whole time I was explaining, they were laughing. I fusty walrusing hate my town sometimes - nobody likes metal.

Dammit, wrong account again. :(

Last time I went to Flipside a lot of the cd's were priced pretty high, but I should check it out again. No offense to being in middle school.

The irony is that a lot of R&M posters get upset when people don't understand the metal sub-genres, but have no problem labeling every pop-punk band on MTV as "emo" even though not a single one of them are.

I guess this doesn't happen too often anymore since LordDargon is hopefully gone forever, but it might.
I'm feeling very happy right now. I give you tihs smiley as proof of that: :D

I have to do a ten-minute presentation on Thursday for my Astrobiology class about the New Horizons project. For those not in the know, New Horizons is the first probe NASA has designed to reach Pluto and its moon of Charon.

I've been trying to think of a way to present this that would make it a show very few people in the class are going to forget anytime soon. And then it hit me... H.P. Lovecraft. When Pluto was discovered in 1930, Lovecraft wrote a story about the inhabitants of that planet entitled "The Whisperer in Darkness."

So, come Thursday, I don my shades and trenchcoat, dress in solid black, and bring my little buddy to class to present myself as Agent Wolf of Delta Green, here to educate all of them on the dangers of the fungi from Yuggoth and how this is the secret purpose of the New Horizons project.

I'd like to think I'm not one of those people, but it's extremely frustrating when I try to explain it and they don't even care. They just make fun of it all. My friend (a self-proclaimed "emo kid") just says "metal is so gay" everytime I start talking about music.

Needless to say, I shall crucify him.

Nerds don't listen to Cathedral.

I love doing projects like this. I always find some way to do it in a way that people aren't going to forget. Last year, I did a presentation on Bram Stoker's Dracula and did it in a Victorian-era costume writing an open letter to the audience.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone else heard of Megaherz? They're a German industrial band similiar to Rammstein. I downloaded a couple of songs, and they're quite good.

Alex, you are badass. There's no other way of putting it. :) I'd love it if someone actually went out of the norm with a presentation like that. I'll keep in mind the whole costume idea if I have to do some kind of presentation in the near future. I love dressing up.

Never heard them, but I'll tell you who is an amazing, Orgy-esque, German Industrial band - Zeromancer.

I guess I'm lucky. While only one of my friends likes black/death, the majority of the rest are into power metal, thrash metal, traditional metal, medlodic death, etc. so they have a a pretty good understanding of genres, and I get to discuss a bunch of the bands I like with them. me and the one friend have been talking about black metal all the time these days. I'd also like to note that it was me who intorduced alot of my friends to alot of the metal bands they listen too.

Out of my school of 1200-1300, there is one metalhead besides me. One single guy. It really, really blows. :( My school is dominated by pop punk and emo, and everyone seems to think that metal is noise. Either that, or they think that the best metal is played by guys in girlpants who color their hair black and pull it over one eye. That one really pisses me off.

In my religion class (private religious school :upset: ), each student takes a turn leading the class in prayer. We can wing it, play a song, show a movie clip, whatever. My friend played Dechristianize. Damn, I wish I was in his class. Everyone else was looking around saying, "what the hell is this shit!?"

Dr. Jake Destructo 10-25-2005 08:26 PM

I've began introducing Porcupine Tree to my friends. So far, I've got two people into them. I'm going to get my friend to download some Porcupine Tree albums I don't have, then jack them from him, because he has uber fast internet. He can download at like 250 kbps.

To anybody who uses DC++, what are some good hubs to join? I haven't used this in a while, and I forget the one's I used to go to. I'm looking to download some old games (quake 1 and 2) because I haven't had any luck finding them so far. Unless anybody in here can help me out?

College professors appreciate it. We're living in an era where most students cobble together a bland PowerPoint presentation and read off the screen with no consideration for whether or not they're boring their audience to tears.

In fact, the only time I ever had to use PowerPoint, I made sure to spice it up. I was partnered with someone in my Psych class, and we had to do a presentation on OCD. Since part of OCD is the white bear principle (the more you try not to think of something, the more you will anyway), we opened the presentation with a picture of a cuddly little polar bear cub and told people "Forget about the bear for now, that comes later." Then just as we're about to conclude the project and finish, we go, "One more thing... (cue picture again) You thought of the bear, didn't you?" We concluded with the explanation, how it pertains to OCD, etc. and the professor commented that she particularly liked that.

Leper Affinity 10-25-2005 08:43 PM

I hate PowerPoint presentations. I did one last year for a history presentation. When the computer wouldn't work, my grade went with it. :( I'd rather lecture than give a PowerPoint presentation. They're much more trouble then they're worth anyway.

Luckily for myself, I am only allowed to stand in front of a class and talk, with an optional poster for pointing to at times. And that's if we have to deliver a talk at all.

Whenever I've had to do any sort of group presentation in the past, I've always gotten grouped up with friends, which made doing something outrageous a lot easier. Me and my friend memorized the dance at the end of the Napolean Dynatmite, and incorporated it into a presentation about Native Americans, and got 50 points of extra credit.

I left that class with a 138%. I was a major extra credit whore.

Hey guys.

Has anybody listened to Coheed and Cambria IV yet? Anybody have an opinion one way or the other on it?

The vocals are severely grating to me, methinks. I would like this a lot better if they had a normal, competent singer.

Dr. Jake Destructo 10-25-2005 09:19 PM

I'm in, Aaron. I feel so powerful now. :D

Lucas- I've heard one song from it, and I was really feeling the guitar work, but yeah, the song would have been a lot better if their vocalist had a lower register.

Steerpike 10-25-2005 09:21 PM

I've never been particularly impressed with Coheed and Cambria. Instrumentally, they have more going for them than some of their contemporaries, but I don't see the big deal some people make about them.
