Glad to hear you're alright. So what do you listen to now-a-days? Still in the Classic Rock swing or have you got swepted in the black hole that is Metal?

I got 13$, woundering what to buy.....I'm thinking Miles.
Well I just finished my first semester as a guitar major, so it has opened me up to lots of classical guitar and jazz. I still listen to classic rock, and I am getting more into metal. Not to worry i can never abandon my first love.

I would buy some Mozart or Ferdinando Carulli

Illmatic 12-26-2005 02:05 PM
Ray: No clue what in the hell you're talking about! I think the Beatles released the strongest string of albums ever by a Rock band, all of their later albums are just simply incredible (starting with Rubber Soul). Almost all of the songs were good through this string of albums, sure there were songs like "Good Morning, Good Morning" and "Birthday" but these songs shouldn't over wiegh the great. To each as own I guess but I don't know how in the hell you can't like all of the later Beatles albums.
I can't stand Sgt. Pepper's (aside from "A Day in the Life" and the title track) and I think it's the most overrated album ever. It just sounds so...dumb. Even for whimsical British pop, it sounds too frivolous and childish. Most of The White Album (now really, a 30 song double album with maybe 12 interesting songs) is a self-indulgent, self-referential snoozefest, a collection of wholly forgettable (at best) songs that serve no purpose.

There's also the tiresome string sections on Abbey Road, the suffocating Phil Specter production on Let It Be (ruining the two best songs on there: the title track and Across The Universe), and...well, most of Magical Mystery Tour was pretty forgettable except the singles.

What I get from this is that you have an opinion, and you dont like his. You refute his opinion by presenting your own as fact.

Lunch 12-26-2005 02:14 PM

It looks like an civilized argument/discussion about different opinions, that's all.

I side more with Ray on this one. While generally like the Beatles' albums we're talking about, to me they aren't as great as everyone says. They certainly have their fair share of filler and overall I find them a bit boring.

When you get into the theory they are. They arent rememeber for no reason. when writing their music the broke off the mundane I IV V chord progression and start mixing it up and anding non harmonic tones and chords.

What I get from this is that you don't like my opinion, so you try to attack the fact that I don't say "IMO" enough for you

And every album they did had some crippling flaw that prevented it from being great. I've never said they didn't have talent; I simply think that they didn't always put it to the right use.

Could you elaborate on this "flaw"

Illmatic 12-26-2005 02:53 PM

It varies from album to album.

Let It Be = the production
Abbey Road = kind of winded - the 'The End' medley lasts a little too long, too many 'lush' string arrangements
Sgt. Pepper's = the songs (as in, quality of)
The White Album = way too much filler and useless vanity project songs
Magical Mystery Tour = mostly just an album of good singles with interchangable filler songs throughout
Revolver = "Yellow Submarine"
Rubber Soul = ends kinda poorly

Ill agree with you on let it be.
Rest of that is pure opinion. A flaw would be production or not being in tune etc. Not what you think of the album.

Illmatic 12-26-2005 03:02 PM

A 'flaw' can be anything.

And I don't expect many to agree with me, but I feel like getting my opinion out there anyway.

JonG 12-26-2005 03:04 PM

Heh, I just got done recording a video of myself playing the "Something" solo. I'm deciding weather or not to show it on MX.

Illmatic 12-26-2005 03:13 PM

Go ahead.

a flaw is an error, and an error can be proven. You cant say something has a flaw then justify it with opinion.

Im not fighting your opinion. Im just fighting how you present it.

Im quite interested.

NP: Queensryche - Breaking The Silence

There are some bits on 'Operation:Mindcrime' which i hear are definately in Dream Theater - 'Metropolis Pt.2:Scenes From A Memory'
They ripped so many people off it's funny. (Dream Theater did)

I must have made a educated mistake.

magicbus 12-26-2005 04:04 PM

I got a few more movies from Best Buy (they didn't have any good cds):

Army of Darkness
Out Cold
Easy Rider

I was looking for The Madcap Laughs and an album by The Stooges, but I couldn't find anything. They didn't have the new John Mayer cd either.

out cold is pretty funny, atleast IMO.

Yea I thought it was really funny. Especially because Zach Galifianakis is in it.

NP: Velvet Underground - Run Run Run
I just listened to If I Should Fall from the Grace with God.

Fantastic album
The title track is such a fun dancing song.

I bought some CDs today. Mostly ska, only one classic rock album (Tom Waits).

Seafroggys 12-26-2005 04:39 PM

i agree on the fact that Rubber Soul ends poorly. It kicks *** through Nowhere Man, then goes to some average mundane stuff until In My Life (best song on the album) and then ends with some more average mundane song, finally ending with one of the worst Beatle songs.

IMO on average Help is better.

And The Beatles just kick ***.........all opinions otherwise are just the thoughts of misguided children.

Glitterati 12-26-2005 04:41 PM
And The Beatles just kick ***.........all opinions otherwise are just the thoughts of misguided children.
Quoted for the awesomeness that is The Beatles.

I bought a Black Sabbath shirt today. It's and black and dark, with this kinda angel thing on it.

"This is my BOOM stick!"

Army of Darkness is classic. Easy Rider is fantastic aswell.

My Best Buy is damn good, they have a gigantic CD section.

JonG 12-26-2005 04:53 PM

Haha, Army of Darkness is so funny.

I love it.

I'll post the video when the tone isn't incredibly bad. It hurts my ears :(

I have a gift certificate to a movie place, should I get The Big Lebowski or take a chance and get City of God or Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

I haven't seen CoG or FaLiLV.

My Best Buy is pretty good I guess. But they don't have a lot of what I'm looking for. They have the smallest blues section ever.

blue3 12-26-2005 05:05 PM

I went to Best Buy today. There was a lot of people and most of the things I wanted were already sold out. I got a few albums from there though.

Bye Bye, Love - Ray Charles

jpj 12-26-2005 05:28 PM

Definitely Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, that movie is great.

EDIT: o noes I need a new avatar now

Sultans, is a good compilation, I was thinking of buying it to further my Dire Straites library. Mark Knophler is one of the most tasteful guitarists ever.

tracks played: 67

Overall:
Genesis 37
Yes 7
Emerson Lake and Palmer 6
Beatles 5
John Lennon 4
Zeppelin 2
Zappa 2
Bob Dylan 1
The Kinks 1
King Crimson 1
Jethro Tull 1

id have a ****load of more songs played but almost all of them arent tagged right (anybody know how to label them right?)

JonG 12-26-2005 07:04 PM

Yeah I do.

You right click them and go to Properties, then Advanced. You label in the stuff there. You don't need album, year or track number.

An easy way to tell if they're tagged is to view your music in "Tile".

To do so, go to View> then Tiles.

Revolver is simply awesome. I love that and How The West Was Won. Dire Straits is pretty cool too.

So I got these CD's for Christmas:
Weezer - Make Believe
The Clash - London Calling
Derek and the Dominoes - Layla
The Eagles - Hotel California
The Who - Live At the Isle Of Wight Festival 1970
The Who - The Who By Numbers
Blues Brothers - The Definitive Collection
John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers - As It All Began 64-69
Cream - Disraeli Gears
Guns n' Roses - Appetite For Distruction

JonG 12-26-2005 07:10 PM

Revolver was the first Beatles album I've ever owned. I was recommended it from this thread :)

I just picked up "Tonight's The Night". I'm listening to it now.

Still lookin' for Zuma though.

Nice haul. The Blues Brothers rock, I got the movie and soundtrack for my birthday last fall.

np- Fortunate Son

I could upload Zuma.

Rubber Soul was my first Beatles album that I owned, not my parents.

JonG 12-26-2005 07:21 PM

That's fine. I'll find it on Soulseek.

zabbit82 12-26-2005 07:23 PM

Revolver and Rubber Soul are amazing. I was recommended those albums in here too. Its impossible for me to say which is the better album....

JonG 12-26-2005 07:25 PM

Revolver has a weak ending IMO. My favorite on that album is probably "She Said, She Said". I don't know why, but I love it.

np: Neil Young - Speakin' Out

zabbit82 12-26-2005 07:31 PM

I think it has a great ending. My favorites on that have to be "Taxman", "Elenor Rigby", "Tomorrow Never Knows", and "Got To Get You Into My Life."
