The only time I've heard anything of SOYCD on the radio was the day that Syd died. I called every classic rock station requesting some songs with him actually performing (anything from Piper and all of their singles), but none of them were played. I kind of laughed at how upset all of the DJs were pretending to be, but didn't have the balls to actually play his stuff...
There is one station here which is pretty adventurous and I've heard them play Time, Brain Damage, Us and Them (with Any Colour You Like still attached at the end) and even SOYCD unedited (!!!) but they're not a very popular station. It's my favourite, though. Actually, they play Floyd almost daily.

Every other station just plays them in a countdown or something - or just Another Brick In the Wall pt2 :p
I listen to a station that does stuff like that. Sadly, the rest of the music isn't much to my liking, so I stick to CDs and iTunes.

Bike would have been pretty cool.

Leper 01-23-2007 03:34 PM

IMO Interstellar Overdrive and Bike are two of Floyd's most overrated songs. Really...they're not that great.

MattSharpIsCool 01-23-2007 05:09 PM

I shall have to disagree. Bike is really just a pop song, which I don't think should be taken very seriously. However, it's probably my least favorite song on Piper.

Interstellar Overdrive, on the other hand, rocks.

Danger Bird 01-23-2007 05:16 PM
We just recently got a station that one played Kashmir and Enter Sandman. Ok sure to you americans that might mean nothing but to me who lives in cultural wasteland Australia it means alot.
Those are both terrible songs

I can't believe my radio station did nothing when Syd died. They're usually pretty cool, except they play Freebird and More Than a Feeling too much.

Interstellar Overdrive was mediocre on the album because it's supposed to be a long jam, but the record companies didn't go for that type of stuff back in the day. Listen to a bootleg of it, it's incredible.

rippa32 01-23-2007 09:02 PM

Back in the day? Its always been like that.

Danger Bird 01-23-2007 09:05 PM

Yeah, but in today's world of DIY recording, Pink Floyd probably would have ended up on an indie label.

MattSharpIsCool 01-23-2007 09:15 PM

After Pink Floyd established themselves, they got a lot more freedom than they did early on. Look at Echoes, SOYCD, or the entire Animals album.

Record labels felt like they were taking a huge risk (and they were) on psychedelic acts in the late 60's, so they didn't allow them to have total control. That's why Interstellar Overdrive was cut back from 20-25 minutes to 10 minutes.

And ya, if a band like Pink Floyd came out tomorrow, you probably wouldn't hear them on the radio or MTV very much.

Lunch 01-23-2007 09:23 PM

Pink Floyd wasn't exactly aiming to please record companies and the mainstream with Saucerful of Secrets, Ummagumma, or Atom Heart Mother either. On the contrary, those albums are actually less accessible than their 70's work.

Riva 01-23-2007 09:59 PM

I think Pink Floyd appearing today would either be an incredibly obscure indie band or just not exist in the form we know them as.

MattSharpIsCool 01-23-2007 10:00 PM

Which is too bad. Lindsey Lohan sells millions of albums, while an amazing band would be stuck touring in a van for 5 years before disappearing into normal careers.

Riva 01-23-2007 10:05 PM

But that's the way it is, and if it wasn't for Lindsay fans, who would we feel superior too?

MattSharpIsCool 01-23-2007 10:06 PM

Rolling Stones fans? Just throwing it out there.

Actually, I'm listening to the Stones right now.

MBS 01-23-2007 10:37 PM
First post! I'm on the biggest WYWH fix. I love that album so much. Has anyone seen David Gilmour in Concert?

NP: SOYCD - Pink Floyd
has anyone seen this recently? I am SO friggin' awesome.

PS- My girlfriend and I were doing yoga to SOYCD a few days ago. It was quite a trip.

MattSharpIsCool 01-23-2007 10:43 PM

You were doing yoga? You hippie :)

I've seen David Gilmour on Pulse, but that's cheating. I hope he comes out with another solo album so I get another chance to see him. He was in Seattle last summer, but I wasn't really a big enough fan yet at that point.

Jim 01-23-2007 11:42 PM

I've got the David Gilmour Live DVD (well, my dad does ), and it's really great. He plays SOYCD acoustic with just an effects pedal unit. It's really great.

Never seen him live though :(

MattSharpIsCool 01-23-2007 11:45 PM

SOYCD would be pretty incredible on the acoustic.

Jim 01-23-2007 11:51 PM

It's really simplistic, but it's quite charming. He changes the melody a little and it's quite strange at first, but it's beautiful after a few listens. I find myself singing that version at work sometimes :smoke:

What's great though, is when the audience finally realise what song he's playing halfway through the opening solo. It's just that one dramatic chord change that makes everyone instantly know it's Shine On. Priceless.

MattSharpIsCool 01-24-2007 12:00 AM

I was messing around with synths at guitat center the other day, and I found an effect that sounded exactly like the one Rick used on SOYCD. So, of course, I made a poor attempt at re-creating the song. It was much fun.

Jim 01-24-2007 12:06 AM

Would've been awesome

The synth in the intro is a winner. And unique too. A lot of Floyd songs start with a synth fading up, but you can always seem to pick Shine.

RedDebil 01-24-2007 12:07 AM

I am a huge Pink Floyd and David Gilmore fan. I covered Breath/Speak to me for my Pink Floyd Cover Project.
I am doing all guitars and vocals, but the screams came from my D&T singer

MattSharpIsCool 01-24-2007 12:12 AM

Nothing beats the keyboard in Any Colour You Like though.

I've been thinking about learning the keyboard/synth and playing that in a band, instead of bass. I think that would be pretty neat.

I love your attempts at a British accent. And that laugh is incredible.

The song itself isn't too bad though. Did you just play guitar over the track itself, or did other people play bass and drums?

Good one :thumb:

I can see you've wanted to be pretty spot-on with the arrangement, right down to the organ in the second verse

Like the screams too

I particularly love the guitar solo in that which sounds kinda like two guitars playing against eachother. It's awesome with the head phones on :)

It was weird..
Bass & Guitars were done pretty much the same time, but the drums were done last sending files over the internet.

MattSharpIsCool 01-24-2007 12:19 AM

I've gotta start listening to music with my headphones on more often. Apparently I'm missing out on a lot of extra stuff because I just listen through the stereo.

Jim 01-24-2007 12:23 AM

^^It's staggering what you'll pick up, especially on DSOTM. It may be subtle, but the subtlety's make the music for Floyd. :)

rippa32 01-24-2007 12:52 AM

Stereo trickery is more noticeable too. That wierd bit in Whole Lotta Love (yer not Pink Floyd I reliase this) on a stereo is a bit crap but through headphones sounds very good.

Jim 01-24-2007 12:55 AM

What's dodgy is the wierd attempt at stereo trickery at the end of Interstellar Overdrive. You don't notice when listening normally, but trust me - with headphones it's really annoying

I guess they just didn't quite have the technology (or studio money) to do it quite well yet :p

rippa32 01-24-2007 12:58 AM

Havnt got PATGOD *runs like hell*. Oh and whats staggering?

Jim 01-24-2007 01:09 AM

About DSOTM or Interstellar Overdrive?

Well, I'll say that they try to alternate the sound in IO from speaker to speaker, but instead of being a fluid transition, the sound changes with a series of "clicks".

I'm sorry but it's hard to explain :/
*runs like hell*
 I got it.
