Great songs on FII: New Millenium, Peruvian Skies, Burning My Soul, Lines in the Sand, Trial of Tears. That's 5 great songs on an 11 track album. By no means groundbreaking, but still a decent album nonetheless.

Triangle 10-26-2005 03:27 AM

After last night I can safely say Theresa Thompson for the win.

shamed-angel 10-26-2005 03:39 AM
FII isn't that bad of an album at all. After the Masterpieces that were I&W, Awake and ACoS I can definately see it being a huge letdown, however in the grand scheme of things, it's pretty decent.

Trial of Tears for the win.

And besides, with FII Atlantic was screwing them around at the time, it was supposed to be a completely different record before Atlantic started hacking and slashing at it.
I think some songs are brilliant. But they didn't have complte artistic control over their music and Desmond Child co-wrote a few songs on it. Trial of Tears, Hell's Kitchen and Peruvian Skies are amazing. But I think that the fact that the record were "exerting pressure in the band to make it more commercial" (according to the programme from the gig on monday night) and I think that ruined the album. OnceInALIVEtime is also IMO their worst live album. It's not bad by any means, just not as good as their other 3.

However, Derek Sherinian played on my favourite song of all time "Change of Seasons", the solos he plays on there are class and the sheer fact that he played on it makes him worthy of my respect. He's also very arrogant on
5YearsinaLIVEtime.

Has anyone here heard the original version on ACOS? It's on "Images and Words Demos" from YTSE Jam.com And It's really weird. It has a guy called Chris Cintron on it, and apparently he's the one who helped to shape alot of the vocal melodies in the song.

The instrumental ending is one of the most majestic, brilliant and overall, satisfying pieces of music they have ever written.

Lord of Sword 10-26-2005 06:51 AM

i like FII, it is different but it seems more melodic and was obviously a totally different direction from Awake. most of the songs are ok, but it also has some of my favourite DT songs like take away my pain, hell's kitchen and trial of tears. plus some of my favourite petrucci solos, especially peruvian skies and take away my pain. not really on the same level as most of DT's other releases but it is still a very good album.

scenesfromatheater 10-26-2005 09:40 AM

I really can't stand the album. The only song I enjoy listening to is Peruvian Skies. Trial of Tears is good but I just find so boring after the first few minutes.

Words cannot do justice the shows I witnessed Monday and Tuesday night.

Best shows ever, no question.

I might post a full review later, don't have time right now.
Tonight (second London show). Me bro said they played a song off every album last night which would be cool at Wolverhampton.

Haha, I'm watching the making of TOT, and it's awsome. JR hits the last note of the album after ITNOG with his nose. It makes me laugh every time....ahhhh....Rudess, what a guy.
Can you send it to me please?

My AIM is rock15guitarist

Lord Abortion 10-26-2005 02:11 PM

I'm sitting here thinking of reasons why I'm not going to see them...

I have none- I suck:(

shamed-angel 10-26-2005 02:21 PM

Aww bless... You can have my memory :)

A quick topic for people to discuss. if you could see Dream Theater perform a cover of any album in it's entirety at a gig, which album would it be?
Mine is definately In The Court of The Crimson King by King Crimson.

Blast it!

Uh... Something wicked this way comes by Iced earth.

shamed-angel 10-26-2005 02:23 PM

You're a really nice guy. Albeit a bit stupid for not seeing DT, you could at least HAVE a reason not to go. :p

Mine would either be In the Court of The Crimson King, 2112, The Wall or The Number of the Beast.

shamed-angel 10-26-2005 02:25 PM

They did TNOTB a while back. www.ytsejamrecords.com has it on sale.

I kinda do, I would find it difficult to get to Wolverhampton, I have been to alot of gigs this year and I'm short of cash, and my lack of people to go with but I know in my heart of hearts I could have gone if I had really made the effort.

Reywas 10-26-2005 02:30 PM

I would love seeing Dream Theater do some Opeth songs live.James the Growler.

I went from Cardiff, on my own, by train. And then the next day I saw Westminster Abbey, it was amazing. Then I came home cause I had work this morning 9 til 9.
I would love seeing Dream Theater do some Opeth songs live.James the Growler.
No. Just No.

GenuineImitation 10-26-2005 02:40 PM

I dont think James could pull off singing Opeth. Maybe the mellower parts, but then again, I have never heard him growl.

Reywas 10-26-2005 02:41 PM

I think he has potential.

Darkness 10-26-2005 03:06 PM
I would love seeing Dream Theater do some Opeth songs live.James the Growler.
They would fail, and not just James. Petrucci couldn't do both guitar parts (let alone only one part, and have the same feel as Mikeal or Peter) Myung could do the bass, and Portnoy would have a hell of a lot of trouble doing some of Martins parts.

Cain 10-26-2005 03:09 PM

Basically, Dream Theater trying to do Opeth would have similar results to a Magna Carta label prog-metal band trying to do Rush.

Lord Abortion 10-26-2005 03:11 PM

Speaking of Rush, perhaps they could do 2112 or test for echo well...
