The Flabbit Rides High 08-08-2005 02:07 AM

I think Blackwater Park is insanely heavy. I know Deliverance is heavy too, but its like someone said to one-dimensional. BWP is really brutal. The title song and songs like The Leper Affinty and The funeral Portrait are really rough compared to the new stuff aswell as old.

In that instance i would recommend getting Still Life first. ITs less heavy and more experimental.

/feels weird cuz BWP was my first album.;p

PeEpHoLe_10 08-08-2005 05:09 AM
A lot of people will say Blackwater Park, while others will say Still Life. Personally I say BWP, but I recommend not getting Deliverance to start out.
Hehe, Deliverance was my first Opeth album.
IMO the best part about My Arms Your Hearse is April Ethereal.
For sure, I love that song.

the2stranger 08-08-2005 08:28 AM

When rocks so much too :D
the only song I never got in to is The Amen Corner,.
it's an ok song, but it lacks flow IMO, making it my least favorite Opeth track.
although it isn't bad by any means ;)

Darkness 08-08-2005 09:21 PM

All summer I've had the Moor stuck in my head... all the different verses just get jammed into my brain... I love that song so much...
Deliverance grew on me as well, but it just seems a little one-dimensional and less-thought out than their other albums. I bought that first because of the phenomenal title track, but was put off the band for several months until I picked up BWP and was completely blown away.
Absoultely - I love Blackwater Park. I wish Ghost Reveries had more screaming. It's a decent album - just not as heavy as I expected. Blackwater Park ftw :thumb:

Kaiwaz 08-08-2005 10:12 PM
Any of them. All of Opeth's albums are excellent. Deliverance and My Arms Your Hearse are good for heavier stuff, D amnation shows their soft and melodic side, and Blackwater Park, Still Life, Morningrise, and Orchid have a mix of both. I couldn't tell you which one to get first...I can't pick a favourite.
Haha touche' I can't either :p I Do know that Morningrise had way more of an impact on me then any other Opeth album, or any other music album all together. I can't fathom the importance of Morningrise. All I know is whenever I hear the word ''Opeth'' I think Morningrise.

I think the album ''flows'' and has a certain vibe that no other album can touch. Reguardless of what others, or Mikael think - Morningrise stands out to me more then any album. I think it's because when I heard it - I never really heard Opeth before - and was amazed that such writing existed. I don't know for sure...all I know is I can't get enough of Morningrise - and recommend it to every Prog Metal fan out there.

Now don't get me wrong, I like everything Opeth writes...and listen to them frequently. I was obsessed with Orchid when I first bought it. I showed it to everyone I knew! But the first time I listened to Morningrise,...Speachless.

Kage 08-09-2005 02:21 AM

Arghh...There's a link to a live Opeth streaming video that's been thrown around in here a couple of times. After half an hour of searching, I can't find it. Anyone know what it is?

PeEpHoLe_10 08-09-2005 06:05 AM

Since nobody in the lyrics section will give me any advice and since this idea I have is kind of in the style of Opeth (Gotta love a sad ending, lol) I was hoping some of you could give me and ideas/opinions/thoughts on this...

http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=376281

..I just read that again, some of it sounds a little lame, but its fixible.

Hells Bells 08-09-2005 08:15 AM

Go for it, it's not a bad idea, it has a lot of potential. And just because it's a sad concept album doesn't mean that it's an Opeth rip off. You have your own style, and it's not going to sound like Opeth unless you deliberately make it that way.

Jude 08-09-2005 01:53 PM

I love Ghost Reveries. There isn't excessive death metal vocals, and those always grate on my nerves. I don't like the clean guitar parts as much as the acoustic ones they usually do, but they're still great. Aside from a few iffy riffs the album is totally solid. The Grand Conjuration is awesome, I can't describe how much arse that track kicks. Especially the main riff...they could just play that riff for 10 minutes and I'd be happy.

Thanks for the advice man. Yeah, ill try to not make it sound too much like Opeth, although they somehow seem to have a big inflence on everything i ever write :p

Deth 08-09-2005 07:23 PM

I don't know whether there is much substance to be had in that story to be honest. It should be larger scale I think, and maybe the family could get killed by a stray bomb or something. You're the judge though.

AuviK 08-09-2005 08:06 PM

... OPETH HAS TO BE THE BEST XTREME METAL BAND EVER ...

The Moor is maybe my favorite song in general. I'm not sure though because it's too hard to tell. I love every Opeth song.

That usually happens when you listen to something constantly :p Try listening to a lot of different kinds of music, it worked for me when I realized that everything I was writing sounded like Chopin.

Shadows 08-09-2005 10:02 PM

I thought maybe the people here could give some advice to an aspiring Opeth fan...

I'm looking to get into more Opeth. I love the new Ghost Reveries and I love their debut, Orchid. I have no problem with any brutal stuff like Deliverence or the softer stuff like Damnation. Excluding Blackwater Park, which album do you guys think I should check out?

I appreciate any help. This is a band I would definitely like to know more about.

relliK 08-09-2005 10:06 PM

Any other album that you havent heard yet.All their albums are top notch.

Still Life would be my suggestion.

Hells Bells 08-09-2005 10:07 PM

If you don't mind either, then get something that's a mix of both, maybe Morningrise?

Shadows 08-09-2005 10:12 PM

Thanks guys. If Morningrise is a mix of both sides, I'll definitely look into that. But I'll take a look at Still Life too since I'm open to any/all suggestions. Those two were actually the two I was leaning towards.

What do you guys think of My Arms, Your Hearse?

GOT the GUDS 112 08-09-2005 10:32 PM
If you only need someone to record the vocals, I could help. I'd like to do it myself, but if it's not good enough I'll just ask my brother, who's my Opeth cover band's singer. I don't use AIM though, I'll just email you.
Is this offer still good? I'm in the middle of recording 'A Fair Judgement' and am also interested in enlisting some help on the vocals. It shouldn't be tooo tough for a real vocalist, seeing as it's only clean vocals and they're sparsely placed in the song. If you can help me out, get back to me through my soundclick or this thread

MAYH one of the most original, well thought out concept albums I've seen IMO. It's heavier than their other albums, although there's still stuff like Credence and Opeth's characteristic contrasting heavy parts with softer ones. I think it's interesting how the songs tie together, not only through the storyline, but the last few words of each song are the title of the next one.

Shadows 08-09-2005 11:48 PM

I'm trying to get that right now. :) I haven't really heard Morningrise yet, but I'm really loving Still Life.

I hope I have a paycheck coming because it looks like I need to do some music shopping.

lost_profits 08-10-2005 12:08 AM

To be honest I don't dig Ghost Of Perdition. Whats up with the generic intro? It has moments that remind me of BWP era Opeth (which is a good thing) The acoustic section is very well done. The Grand Conjuration seems to be growing on me with every listen

Guys I need some help with the last lyrics to By The Pain I See In Others... I know they've been posted before but I can't find them... and me and my friend are trying to figure out the concept for Deliverance and ****ation... any help would be nice.

the2stranger 08-10-2005 04:04 AM

the last part are not new lyrics, it's just a certain passage of lyrics sung backwards, I can't remember which passage though..

I would be interested in hearing your concept idea behind it

Do you know if there is any way to save that video to your hard drive?

For your next album Shadows Fallen, I would go Still Life or Morningrise.
