I'm not a Green Day hater.

They were my favourite band for ages, I have a lot of respect for them.

I love them, got me into music.

What was it about them that got you into music though? :p

i.e- I love Green Day because they have catchy stuff and lyrics that I can relate to. They can be wacky and funny in some of their songs, then in others be serious and still make awesome music.

Well the reason i like Green Day so much on thier own is because:

A) Billie has written so many lyrics, to the point where everyone can relate to something. I can relate to them a helluva lot.
B) They make fun music as you said, simply enjoyable.

Is that good enough? Plus they got me playing guitar.

I'm sure you could maybe copy someone's technique. That's how I picked up my technique on bass, by watching Les Claypool perform live so many times.
