*bump*
I was listening to the classic rock station today (94.7 Detroit) and thier doing a Top 400 album countdown, voted by the listeners online. Who's Next was number 5 on that list. I dunno, I thought I'd share that bit of useless information... |
i was listening to that. where do you live?
dsotm was 7. i ws expecting it to be higher. |
Near Ann Arbor, Michigan. It was 94.7 WCSX FM, and DSOTM was number 3.
I see you also live in Michigan, near where? |
The whole Rock and metal forum is from Michigan.
It's usually hard for the Who to be high up on those lists because they don't have a definitive "best" album (even the to public). I guess the list people favor Who's Next, but legions of fans would call Tommy, Quadrophenia, or Live at Leeds their best. |
Lunch, are you and Lunch89 (or whatever the numbers are) the same person?
|
Yes, we are.
|
Weird. Cool.
I read this write up a while back, but never posted. Good job! |
i heard heaven and hell off of live at leeds.......are you sure the Who are mortal humans, because after hearing that I felt like they were gods.
Lemme rephrase that....I felt like they were Gods. |
I get that same feeling. The instrumentals (mostly Entwislte and Moon, obviously, but Townshend carries his weight fine) are absolutely stunning on that song. Also check out Young Man Blues for a similar effect.

This is my 5000Th post. w00t. :chug:
And I wanted to share it with the Who board. Which I consider my MX home when it comes to threads. It's been a pleasure posting here for the last 6 months or so And I want to wish eveyone here a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. It's been a real highlight of my online existence posting alongside all you Who maniacs. :) So, now to Who business. It seems Pete is invigorated these days. He seems to be going through a very creative period which seems to be spurred on by his new relationship with one Rachel Fuller, who is also a recording artist of some merit and is active on Pete's website to an extent. Pete's website is a hotbed of Who/Pete news and activity these days, and I recommend a visit to any Who fan who reads this. And right now a bootleg is running there on Towser TV of the Who live in Irvine, California from the year 2000. Pete says it's one of the better gigs they did with John before he passed, RIP. Anyway, below are a couple of recent entries that may be of interest to Who fans from Pete's Diaries. Sounds like we have something to look forward to in 2006. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Who People :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 24 December 2005 I will go on tour..... As it seems everyone in the world is already making announcements about a forthcoming Who tour I figured I should make my own statement. I have said many times, repeated up until a few days ago, that I am reticent about committing to a tour without a completed new Who album under my belt. As things stand I am still pushing to produce some more songs. So the announcement may seem premature. It is not. I certainly don't give a flying f**k whether anything I write is a hit, or will get played on my beloved rock radio, or sell a million - or might not fit because it sounds like a Broadway tune, or as though I've 'stolen' Tom Waits voice (exactly how does one steal a voice that was already on loan from someone as esteemed as Louis Armstrong or Earl Hines? God knows how Tom feels about the idea I've stolen his voice.) What I care about is that Roger Daltrey feels comfortable with the songs I write so he can sing a few of them on stage - while I lunge around looking gorgeous and playing show-off guitar like a kid in a music shop. After forty-five years of this crap I've just started to enjoy it. So why the sudden announcements? Who manager Bill Curbishley has come up with a great scheme that may circumvent the need for a CD full of Green Day and White Stripes impersonations. No, it is not an 'EP'. It is a truly inspired idea. I'll let his agents pass you the news when they have it polished like a new Pimp-My-Ride Hummer. What his brilliant idea means is that if I don't have a full thirty tracks ready to go, we can settle on what I do have. So I can commit. There has been a footnote to the articles I've read that suggest that my girlfriend Rachel Fuller may be opening some Who shows. She probably won't. If we are going to be nepotistic I would like to invite my brother Simon's band CASBAH CLUB. I saw them recently in London and they are intense: Who fans would love them. Rachel is planning touring versions of IN THE ATTIC and BASEMENT JAM, her hugely popular webcast talk and music shows. This not necessarily modest circus would follow the Who's own FAT CHANCE calvacade. I'm sure she'll play some regular club dates along the way too. I hope Roger and I will be able to drop in on some of those too. It would be great to keep this tour flexible, dangerous, exciting, innovative and accessible as well as providing high-end rock shows for those of us who like pretty lights and songs we already know. I have high hopes for the whole tour to be shared to a wide audience at home in a mixture of PAY FOR VIEW and FREE special webcasts. Some of the proceeds will go to charity of course. I also have a very, very cool surprise to announce in June, just before the tour kicks off. Now leave me the f**k alone while I help support my son while he gets through his exams. - Pete Townshend ------------------------------------------------------------------ 22 December 2005 The Who at Irvine August 2000 At last I have emerged from TWO WEEKS of DVD burning hell (I should have gone to a tech class) and in an hour or two will be able to put up William Snyder's beautiful footage of the band when we played one of our last really great shows with John Entwistle. This will be looped on TOWSERTV. I may produce some highlights for download. This is not a complete show, William occasionally moved around the hall, and there was no camera to fill in the shots. But even so, I have smoothed the cuts, and the whole effect is of being at a great Who show, on the stage with the band or the front row. I hope this will see us all through Christmas and the Holidays. Enjoy. - Pete Townshend |
I will go on tour.....
HURRAY! Edit: While reading that article, I was once again reminded that Pete Townsend is a damn funny guy. |
Happy holidays to you to John, and to everyone else on MX. That's good news from Pete.
|
HAppy Holidays all
may we all see the who on the next tour And I'm going to get the Tommy/Quadrophenia live dvd ^^ |
Good idea, I like that DVD alot.
I got Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere - The Complete Who Chronicle coffee table book for Christmas and the Live at the Royal Albert Hall CD. |
Yup it's a very good dvd(Baba O' Riley just owns)
Live at the royal albert hall is also a cd I like, allthough I think the tracklist was sometimes a bit weak. royal albert hall needed more Tommy stuff the dvd's needed more oldies, like my generation, magic bus etc But if you have them both it's great :D |

Even picking the book up makes me happy. It has a day-by-day account of important Who events up to 1978. And tons of great pictures. |

i got Quad for christmas, and even though it is a damn fine album, I don't feel like its edgy or rocky enough, its too smooth and produced. I still think Tommy is the best. Any other thoughts on this?
Even though the PUnk and the Godfather is a kickass song. |

Even though the PUnk and the Godfather is a kickass song.
The "over-producing" on Quadrophenia gets annoying to me sometimes, I just feel like they refine it too much or that there is too much going on. I wouldn't say that it wasn't rocky enough though, some of their hardest rockers are on Quadrophenia. The Real Me, Punk and the Godfather, I've Had Enough, Dr. Jimmy, and Love Reign O'Er me are all classic rocking Who. |

Even though the PUnk and the Godfather is a kickass song.
^^Hmm. I've never heard Quad as smooth or overproduced. I've always felt it was raw and rockin' and explosive. For those who feel like that, though, a version of it was remixed by Enwhistle for the soundtrack to the film. Many feel this is the definitive version, as Entwhistle cleans things up and cuts down the fat. Leaner sound altogether. Although I'm not sure if it has ever been made available digitally. But that's just me.
You and every other true Who fan. /starts controversy. Prepares for war. |
Well my dad always used to play that more when I was little, so that grew on me. Tommy is good also, but I dont have that one. My dad does, but out of personal preference, I prefer Quad. I'm a hardcore Zep fan, so The Who aren't really my trump cards for debate.
|
^^Yeah. I don't debate this stuff, either. I'm just trying to take the piss outta Lunch because I want his shiny new book. :smash:

Sorry I couldn't read what you were saying because I was busy reading MY BRAND NEW DEFINITIVE WHO BOOK THAT YOU DON'T OWN. |
haha pure ownage
it would have been nice to get the tommy/quad DVD, as I've always wanted to see live Tommy in its entirety. How does the '89 show compare to like, for example, the Woodstock footage from TKAA? |
It's alittle over the top, I definitely prefer the four core members performing it. The 1989 is a lot more theatrical because of how many people they have and how they put the show on. And it's got a little bit of that cheesey 80's-ness. Overall however, it's still Daltrey, Townshend and Entwistle, and it's still Tommy, so it's pretty good.
|
How does the '89 show compare to like, for example, the Woodstock footage from TKAA?
Like apples and oranges, basically.... ....but it's still the Who. And the Woodstock stuff kinda sucks. EDIT: I find the '89 shows go for an album kind of experiance. The horns and synths and back up singers and percussionist lend it that feel and sound. The Woodstock stuff? Well, I don't have to tell you about that.... |
yeah, they hated their woodstock performance. daltrey's voice is off in "see me, feel me."
you know what song is awesome? "eminence front". overlooked too because its post-moon. |
Entwistle's bass is really great on the chorus. I really dig that song in general.

How does the '89 show compare to like, for example, the Woodstock footage from TKAA?
I haven't seen TKAA (I know I need to,) but I think the best way to go would be with Isle of Wite. I know they cut a few tracks, but if I remember corectly they're just minor ones. The Tommy part of the DVD is definitly the weakest part, but it works in some places. The Quad/Live Hits part is awesome, though. I love the version of Can't Explain from the '96 encore. |
yeah, they hated their woodstock performance. daltrey's voice is off in "see me, feel me."
you know what song is awesome? "eminence front". overlooked too because its post-moon.
Eminence Front is a standout track. The Who actually had some good post Moon songs and performances on record. However spotty. You Better You Bet, Don't Let Go The Coat, You, and especially Another Tricky Day (a Who classic) are all very solid cuts from Face Dances. And Daily Records, too. From "It's Hard" Cry If You Want, Dangerous, Eminence Front, and One At A Time all get the job done. Athena isn't bad, either. The rest is pretty much crap, though. And I can never mention this period of the Who's career without mentioning Pete's solo albums of the same time. Empty Glass is clearly a Who album, and had it been performed by them it would of been right up there with the best Who albums, and a new beginning for the band after Moons death. This album came out right after Face Dances. And again with It's Hard, Townshends solo album of the same year "All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes" would of made a great Who album. As they are I consider them Who albums by default, and they are a big part of the way I got into the Who. These albums would of seeing them go out with a bang instead of a whimper. I blame Roger for this. But Pete as well. Dumb bastards.... Whatever the case, it's all long been said and done. But for any of you who might wonder where exactly the Who's greatnesss disappeared to during the Kenny Jones years, don't blame the drummer!! It's all there. In spades, and as good as ever. It just can't be found on Who albums. You have to look to the Creator for it. The One. The All Knowing..... .....which means Pete, of course. So check out those solo albums. You will be amazed.... |
This forum has a Who board! Cool. Hope you regulars don't mind a new guy posting here. I love this band. It's good to see a forum where others do, too. I've read some posts and you guys seem to know your stuff. Great first article, and I just want to say I also agree with JXD about the Pete solo albums. A real missed opportunity for the Who.
I hope to post here as often as I can. |
See Me, Feel Me better at Woodstock than at Leeds? No way.
Kenney Jones gets a lot of blame for things he isn't responsible for. |
Nice Who board here. Hope you have room for another member. And just to confirm what another member had posted, here is a link confirming a Who project and tour for next year. Sounds like they are going to freshen up things some. I'm looking forward to it:

Always good to have another poster here, especially since this thread lacks heavy traffic.
I've seen multiple sites confirming the 2006 tour, now I can't wait for the dates to be posted. |
Hey Lunch, what would you rate Face Dances? I listened to it on vynal on my dad's record player a while ago. You Better You Bet is one of my favorite Who tracks, but I felt the rest of it to be really poppy. It would be cool if I had your opinion anyway...
