Yes, it's a great album.
Yes, it's a great album.
I second that motion.

I like my doom with growls, but it depends more on the band and how they sound

Freezing Moon 12-20-2005 08:11 PM

For most Doom I prefer clean vocals.

For stuff like Doom/Death and Funeral Doom though, there has to be growls. That stuff isn't as good as the Traditional/Epic though, in my opinion.

Werny 12-21-2005 12:34 AM

Ok, question from moi, again with the Wizard;

I'm gradually downloading Dopethrone (don't judge me, Mum won't let me purchase anything online), and I got a version of the title track which is 10:35. But the one on the album is reportedly 20:48. It's not cut off or anything, it's a full proper song, and it has the correct lyrics. I dunno.

Anyways best song so far is probably... ack dammit I can't decide. It's surprising that stoner bands like the Wizard and Bongzilla are such gifted songwriters.

Freezing Moon 12-21-2005 01:26 AM

The version I have is the 20 minute one, and I have a downloaded copy also.

Werny 12-21-2005 01:33 AM
The version I have is the 20 minute one, and I have a downloaded copy also.
I see. Hmm... is there a hidden track or something? The person I downloaded it off might've cut the last 10 minutes off 'cause it's a hidden track or something.

Sorry about being stubborn but I have dial-up, the 20 minute version, at the quality I want, is like 40 megs. Would take hours.

Freezing Moon 12-21-2005 01:41 AM

Have you tried to get your local CD store to order it for you?

Werny 12-21-2005 03:10 AM

I've got two local stores, neither of them have heard of it. Where's the second hand/import stores when you need them? You'd think a cruddy town like mine would have one. Stupid Australia.

It's not just Dopethrone I'm PO'ed about not being able to get. There's all the other Wizard records, Bongzilla, Sunn 0)))... daum. At least all Cathedral is available around here (although I ordered Forest of Equilibrium about 3 months ago and it still hasn't come in... once again, stupid Australia).

Jondur 12-21-2005 03:15 AM

There's actually a doom band called The Wizard from Tasmania - I've only heard one track but was good stuff.

Freezing Moon: I applaud your excellent taste. Here's another recommendation - The Gates of Slumber. If you like Vitus and TPOG then I reckon you'll love TGOS. Go get!

:D

I've got a Vitus album coming to me in the mail right now. I would also order TPoG, but it would take a couple of months to get here off of Amazon so for now I have to deal with mp3's.

Will check out The Gates of Slumber, thanks. :)

Now Playing: Master's Hammer - Bad Modly

EDIT:
For anyone else who wants to check them out;
Hellride Records seems to be the only place that carries their albums in the US. Some other distro has them in Europe.

Here's an mp3 on the Hellride site from their album The Awakening.

They sound great. :)

During a recent QOTSA concert, John Garcia came up during the encore and peformed Thumb, Hurricane, and Supa Scoopa and the Mighty Scoop with QOTSA. I wish i was there so bad. If Kyuss ever does a reunion tour, ill **** myself out of excitement.

joe_fresh 12-26-2005 05:43 AM

Just discovered a new band (new to me) called Confessor. I looked them up on metal-archives, and they described them as technical doom metal, so i found their first album. Its very good, similar to solitude aeturnus but with meshuggah-style off beat drumming. Anyone else heard of them? I am not so keen on their newer material, but Condemed is a fantastic album.

I've got the audio of the concert, and the video of hurricane

It's nothing special

If Kyuss got back together it would kill them, the point of them splitting up was to preserve what greatness they had ;)

Werny 12-26-2005 07:44 AM

I downloaded all of Dopethrone;

HOOOLY CRAAAP.

Is all I can say. Weird Tales is hardcore.

Reverend Bizarre is the only doom metal I've heard and I like it. And early Katatonia. Recommend some more.

Worst name ever  Is there any audio flying around?

shamed-angel 12-27-2005 06:56 AM

erm...you could check out http://www.bumsnogger.co.uk/ they really are a wicked band. once you've got past the hilarity of their name they're wicked.

Kerrang! Review of Bum the Missing 2005 Tour split 7" with Among the Missing
Two great examples of how a combination of strong booze and a bad attitude can result in gloriously loud and filthy music. Bumsnogger may have an appalling name, but their twisted sludge is guaranteed to send you creaming towards the off-licence. Among The Missing are altogether darker and more unhinged, like a council estate Black Flag whacked out on 'ludes. Doom-laden fun for all the family. Catch them on the 'Bum The Missing' tour now.

www.myspace.com/bumsnogger is the only thing I can find online.

Check them out.

Confessed2005 12-27-2005 07:31 AM

I don't know a huge lot about doom metal. Yet I love My Dying Bride and November's Doom. This Bumsnogger band sound pretty cool despite the comic genius of their name.

When I listen to Doom, I don't want all of this gloomy "make me bleed" nonsense which My Dying Bride have gotten caught up in as of late; I want monolithic riffs that make me stand back, fall to the floor and worship the God of downtuned guitars. Novembers Doom do just that. I have all of their albums with the exception of their newest, and although I've only listened to a few songs from the first one, I love them. They floor me everytime.

"Not the Strong" pwns

Confessed2005 12-27-2005 10:10 AM

I think 'Autumn Reflection' is amazing. I really want to buy "The Pale Haunt Departure" but i can't actually find it anywhere which is rather annoying.

Werny 12-27-2005 10:18 AM
"Not the Strong" pwns
The music is definitely mindblowing, but the vocals and lyrics nearly put me right off. Is it a different vocalist? If so, he's certainly lost his growl (or he sneezed all the mucus out of his throat).

"If only my mother knew the real me" get out of here! If they're gonna get all doom 'n' gloom they may as well do it PROPERLY. But I still say the music, however fast and undoomish, is awesome.

IAJP 01-02-2006 09:04 AM

I'm bumping this thread, 'cause Cathedral are probbably going to become my favourite band.

Poofy 666 01-04-2006 06:46 PM

Just found "Llenandose de Gusanos" by Corrupted on eBay! Been looking for that album for ages.

repcak 01-04-2006 06:53 PM

i want to know more doom bands... can you give me some recommendations?

bands i love!
- anathema (serenades, the silent enigma, eternity)
- my dying bride (turn loose to swans)
- katatonia (brave murder day)

how you see i like the doom-death-metal genre a lot... any tips?

Freezing Moon 01-04-2006 06:55 PM

Doom Death; Disembowelment, Thorr's Hammer, Burning Witch

I don't know a lot of it but definetly check out Disembowelment. I prefer Epic/Traditional.

Jondur 01-09-2006 06:22 AM
Reverend Bizarre is the only doom metal I've heard and I like it. And early Katatonia. Recommend some more.
Bands like Reverend Bizarre:

St Vitus
Pentagram
The Obsessed
Orodruin
The Gates of Slumber

Bands like Katatonia - well they ripped all of their early sound off Paradise Lost "Gothic" so maybe check that out.

Stoic 01-11-2006 11:44 AM

Jondur (or anyone who can help me)! Doomshine have recently grabbed my attention and I'm thinking of getting their full length album. Are you familiar with them and if yes what can you tell me?

Tyler 01-11-2006 11:46 AM

I'm listening to a lot of Bongzilla and Electric Wizard lately. I dont smoke pot, but they make me wish I did, haha.

Yeah dude, I feel like that with Kyuss, I haven't got round to trying it yet

Electric Wizard
Kyuss
Melvins

Top 3 heavy bands of my month ;)
Can someone give me a good description of "Stoner / Doom Metal"
I dont know if this is "good" or not, but I'll give it a shot.
It's basically slower metal, which is typically very bottom heavy and has a lot of groove to it.

Here's teh wikipedia definitions:

Doom metal is a form of heavy metal that emerged as a recognised subgenre in the mid-1980s. It is slow and heavy and intended to evoke an atmosphere of darkness, despair and melancholy. It is very strongly influenced by the early work of Black Sabbath, and a number of early Black Sabbath tracks, such as "Black Sabbath", are often considered embryonic or prototypical doom metal songs.

Stoner metal is best known by its commonly stripped down production, use of psychedelic guitar effects, and deep 1970s-rock influence from groups like Black Sabbath.

Kyle 01-11-2006 12:41 PM

I know I like some Stoner Metal, but am never sure on a few bands..

I'm seeing Clutch/Corrosion of Conformity on the 29th....is that Stoner/Doom...or neither?

repcak 01-11-2006 01:34 PM

whats about queens of the stone age? stoner rock?

Tyler 01-11-2006 01:38 PM
Ok, cool, erm.

I like Cult of Luna (or at least some of their songs) ,would they be classed as Doom Metal?
I think they're at least bordering on it.
I know I like some Stoner Metal, but am never sure on a few bands..

Clutch, well from the one album I have, I'd probably say no..but I'm not sure about CoC
whats about queens of the stone age? stoner rock?
I haven't heard much of them, but Kyuss are, and some of the members of Kyuss went on to form QOTSA

I'd say CoC was classed as Stoner Metal (and risk a lynching from doomsters for using the phrase). Either way they're very good.

A_Guy 01-11-2006 05:57 PM
whats about queens of the stone age? stoner rock?
No, not really. Their first album (with three Kyuss members) was hard, but not stoner. Now, their more, alternative, rock, although its not always right to catogorize them in a single genre. Definately not stoner/doom
