Please someone send me an Isen Torr song :(
I'd love to but I only have it on vinyl and can't transfer it. It is ace though - sounds (as you may expect considering who wrote the songs) like a more upbeat Solstice. Not doom at all - more NWOBHM but still great songs. It comes up on Ebay quite often - well worth spending the money on.

Thank you Jondur, I will keep an eye on it on ebay unless I see it somewhere else. I've heard very good things about this band and from the descriptions I think I'll like them.

Jondur 09-13-2005 03:36 AM

Its vinyl only btw. Limited to 600 copies and extremely good! Members of Solstice, Twisted Tower Dire, Ritual Steel and Falcon.

Grey Incision 09-13-2005 03:44 AM

Rigor Sardonicus

If anybody can tell me about them, Jondur can.....................can he?

Jondur 09-13-2005 06:47 AM

They're a funeral doom band. I have no interest beyond that.

Apocalyptic Raids 09-13-2005 06:55 AM

You wouldn't happen to have a top 10 essential Doom albums list like you do for Death Metal would you?

ween2424 09-13-2005 08:04 AM

Who here likes Clutch? I am a big fan. I have all their full length albums. I'm loving the new album 'Robot Hive/ Exodus' anyone else?

If you like Robot Hive you'll like 'Blast Tyrant' and 'Pure Rock Fury'

Their first album"Transnational Speedway League" is more on their metal side
Their s/t is kinda spacey funk metal
The "Elephant Riders" album has a jazz sense to it
and "Jam Room" is jam band-ish

I highly recommend seeing them live.

I saw them live a few years ago when they were supporting Raging Speedhorn with Candiria, they kicked ***!

Shred Danson 09-13-2005 12:12 PM

I haven't gotten Robot Hive/Exodus yet...:(

They played mostly "Pure Rock Fury" songs at Sounds of The Underground....

Yeah, I saw them when they went on tour to support 'Blast Tyrant' last year. It was my first concert, and definately a good choice. I only had three of their albums at the time, I only recognized a few songs, but it was encredible. The energy they put off is amazing. Neil(their singer/my avatar) is such a beast when he sings.

I'm totally new to this thread and don't know anything about the genre, but are Sabbath classed as doom metal by some people? Also, would Paradise Lost qualify for inclusion too?

Black Sabbath is not doom metal. They seem like stoner metal though.

Black Sabbath are like the godfathers of doom. Doom-in-waiting. Embryonic doom.

Where doom came from, basically, but not doom themselves.

Nuke Broadcast 09-13-2005 08:24 PM
Searched the thread and didn't find anything, so have any of you heard of Earthride? I just found a little synopsis about their debut album, and it sounds like it might be good;

"The debut album from this low-end shuddering new doom group led by SPIRIT CARAVAN bassist DAVID SHERMAN, who has too much energy for just one band. An abrasive and ugly, doom-ridden powerhouse of raw and nasty ultra-heavy rock thunder produced by CHRIS KOSLOWSKI (Pentagram, Spirit Caravan, Internal Void, Obsessed). Some heavy-ass shit."
ive had their stuff for a while now, and they arent lying, it IS ****ed good.

ween2424 09-13-2005 09:29 PM

I'm guessing Doom metal is extremely heavy detuned guitars and stuff like that? If it is I will love it.

I heard Candlemass tunes down to G.

Jondur 09-16-2005 03:13 AM

No. They tune to B as far as I know (I'm a drummer, sorry.) The River tuned down to A - I don't know of any bands going lower than that!

Jondur 09-16-2005 03:18 AM
I'm totally new to this thread and don't know anything about the genre, but are Sabbath classed as doom metal by some people?
It's an interesting one because yes the genre Sabbath sound most like is doom. But yet they were also the first heavy metal band but metal has moved away from Sabbath while doom has stayed the closest to the original Sabbath blueprint. So maybe doom is just heavy metal and all the other stuff is different?
Also, would Paradise Lost qualify for inclusion too?
Doom/death maybe. The first album is just slow death metal and bloody good at that! Gothic is closer to Celtic Frost's Into the Pandemonium and from then on they were more like a gothic Metallica!

Still love the first two albums though.
You wouldn't happen to have a top 10 essential Doom albums list like you do for Death Metal would you?
I think I have done one in the past but I can't find it. So here's another. Note: It's not in order and it's not exhaustive.

Candlemass - Nightfall
Solitude Aeturnus - Through the Darkest Hour
St Vitus - V
Solstice - New Dark Age
Revelation - Yet So Far
Trouble - The Skull
Pentagram - Day of Reckoning
The Obsessed - Church Within
Penance - Spiritual Natural
Place of Skulls - With Vision

Meshuggah tunes down to F. They're more tech metal than anything else though.

On the 8-stringers isit? Thats insane, F must be gut busting
On the 8-stringers isit? Thats insane, F must be gut busting
Yeah they use 8-strings, but I think theres another small string. They don't have a bass player anymore I don't think. Their guitars sond like a distorted twangy bass.

CASTRO! 09-16-2005 10:11 AM

CASTRO! plays doomey, grungey, bass and drum driven hard rock.
billed 'Mayfield's finest organic alternative rock band' and they live up to the name of the junkie capital of rock city. tho not actually junkies, the band definitely pump out the sludgey, smacked-out sound you'd associate with some of seattle's finest, with a healthy bit of tool thrown in for good measure.
hailing from rock city Newcastle, Australia, the boys have 11 mp3s up for free download on their website www.castroband.com , these are very early recordings, the band are currently working on a full length album for large scale distribution, which features much bigger guitars and fat grooving bass, driven by powerful percussion from Dave Tracey, one of the top youth drummers in the country, the album will be professionally mastered and feature a srting quartet on a song or two. keep an eye on www.castroband.com for breaking developments.

Freezing Moon 09-16-2005 05:04 PM

Jondur, you made the top 10 list for me when I asked in the Death Heads thread.

Here it is:
OK. You have to bear in mind that my tastes are quite restricted and this list will concentrate on old-school and epic doom.

In no particular order:

Solitude Aeturnus - Through the Darkest Hour (If you like Epicus then you'll love this)
Candlemass - Nightfall
Solstice - New Dark Age
St Vitus - V (I actually Prefer the self-titled debut but it's nigh on impossible to get hold of)
Trouble - The Skull
Pentagram - Day of Reckoning
Revelation - Frozen Masque
Penance - Spiritual Natural
The Obsessed - The Church Within
Count Raven - Destruction of the Void

As with the 'essential Death Metal albums' list this is a list of albums that I believe shaped the genre. They may not neccessarily be the best introduction to the genre.

If you like Epicus here are some other suggestions:

Isole - Forevermore
While Heaven Wept - Of Empires Forlorn

Other class albums:

Orodruin - Epicurean Mass
Reverend Bizarre - In the Rectory
The Gates of Slumber - The Awakening
What is Doom Metal?

the2stranger 09-17-2005 02:58 AM
What is Doom Metal?
very slowed down heavy and attmospheric metal
often the guitars are downtuned.
the lyrics and the music create a very doom like feeling, hence the name :)
