Okay, explain the whole kosher thing, please :) I've learnt about what can and can't be done and eaten and such, but I've never really been told why.

well, the reason why shechita (ritual slaughter) is done in the way that it is is to cause the least amount of pain possible to the animal. But I imagine that this isn't what you mean.

The reason why we're only allowed to eat certain foods is because others are spiritually unclean, supposedly. Some of this has been proven - for example, eating milk and meat together is now scientifically known to be healthy, but the jews have been keeping their milky and meaty foods seperate for thousands of years. I'm pretty sure pork is a fattier meat than others too. So it's a mixture of real scientific healthy reasons, and supposed spiritual reasons.

Which is a shame, coz I can't help but love cheeseburgers :upset:
