Most classic rock musicians had to get lessons of some sort whether it was through a teacher or a father. They definitely didn't have the resources people have had today to even be self sufficient. Even Kurt Cobain had basic guitar training through his grandfather.

I find Dream Theater's solos don't always fit as well as say, Pink Floyd's. I don't like listening to technical music for the sake of technical. For instance, I can't stand almost any Jazz.

Sort of. I know scales sort of, but not what scales. I play notes in progression until I find what I want. Usually I find the base note I want, then the next note, then play the two and try to find the next note, and find each note one at a time after playing through everything that comes before it.

I've been looking for In Due Time's newest album for a while. I find Capital Tragedy is better if I want breakdown + Breakdown + Breakdown = Music. They aren't just empty breakdowns (like "Chug chug chug. Chug), but full, complete, awesome ones ("Chug chug chug NENENE NANANA!")
