Thing is, from the videos I've seen of Periphery's live set up, their tones are amazing, but the recorded tone just isn't. I can see myself going back and listening to the free stuff he did more than the album. I think he should make some more of the slower, ambient stuff like Jetpack Was Yes, Press Enter and Epic Fail.
don't really like that shouty nonsense you guys listen to
Ha! That's such a British thing to say. Something I can imagine James May saying. |
I'm trailing behind man, can't beat ~25k in robot unicorn
|
I got a 75K the other day. But generally if I score over 25k it's pretty much a fluke.
|
Just got 36k 4th try.

I'm honestly not sure whether it's genus or madness.
Either way, I like it. |

AKG 721 MKII thoughts? |
Thanks man. We play modern-ish rock, but not like that helps. He knows he needs new skins, not sure if he went through with it or not. This was meant to be a myspace recording thing but knowing me it's gonna be demo worthy or more hopefully (ocd). Apparently we have 5 mics plus kick and OH, so we should be able to nail a fairly good sounds recording
I don't know the exact specs on the mics we got either so once I find out I'll probably do some google hunting to see what I can do with them. I have a pretty good idea what I'm doing but it'll be trial and error for sure
Ideally you'll want 2 small diaphragm capacitors (condensers) for OH's, a 57 or other sort of moving coil for snare, a half decent cardioid for kick and in an ideal world some 421's for toms. But they're pretty expensive so whatever equivalent you have avaiable. Don't bother micing the bottom of the snare if you're limited to 5 or so mics. Don't bother with a room if you don't have enough mics. Don't bother with two mics on the kick either. If you could get the models and numbers that'd be great to help you decide what to use them for. |

AKG 721 MKII thoughts?
I've got these: http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser/home_en.nsf/root/04974_dj_equipment Quite bright, and not very bassy. But I'd rather have honest highs than test my LF's in headphones. They're pretty modular as well so if something breaks you can get individual parts replaced. Lolz ignore the 'dj equipment'. They're very good for home recording with 32db of noise attentuation. |
Well we're a bit into recording and this is the setup, but I don't remember the mic brand / models because most of them came in a cheapish (I believe) kit.
2 oh 1 kick 2 snare (top / bottom0 originally 1 on the snare but I really like the bottom of the snare better, so mic'd top/bottom rim 2 toms and 1 hi hat, which is honestly pretty useless because it shows in every other mic.. It's sounding ok so far, but it needs processing and whatnot afterwards so it's pretty raw right now |
I already have beyer 990pro's for testing mixes so I just want something for recording and casual listening, the akg's look comfortable.
|
Unless you have an expensive kit in an amazing room, drums are always gonna sound pretty shabby until the mix process, so don't worry unless there's something horribly wrong.
I'd swap the hi hat for a room mic. Put it right up against the furthest away reflective surface from kit. If it sounds like **** then move it till it sounds okay. It'll need compression and filtering out of the lows anyways. |

For recording they're awesome. And I love the sound of them through my Firepod. But if you want more bass the AKG's look like a better option. |
FUCK intonation of Floyd Rose style bridges. I don't know why I'm doing it when I'm 90% sure I'm going to try to sell this thing next month.
|
gay isnt it
|
Figure out where the bridge is going to sit, block it, and then intonate
|
I should probably do that. I just have to wonder around my house and try to find something which blocks it at the correct level. Might take as long that way as not.
I just have to remember that guitars with proper intonation sound a lot better than those which are not. Edit: Well shit I just lucked out. My little pick holder is the perfect size to keep the bridge where it should be. |
you can't intonate a guitar without serious modifications, the instrument itself disallows it.
|
Stop being a Josh, you know I'm talking about string intonation.
|
I figured you were being incorrect about something as per usual.

best thing to do with a floyd rose imo don't know what ever possessed me to get a guitar with one A lot of the shoegaze bands use more whammy bar then you'd believe and they still don't use locking trems
I should probably do that. I'm watching the Top Gear speical when they went to the USA.
Hammond: I'm looking for a real cool car... Dealer: How about a '99 Honda civic? Hammond: ermm Dealer: trollface.jpg Such a good episode. |
Seen that episode so many times. Funny shit.

Top Gear and the F1 are the only things I bother to watch on TV any more, well that and The Pacific, which I've got on Sky+ but haven't got around to watching yet, is it as good as Band of Brothers?
Also: http://www.myspace.com/mountainsbecamemachines Really digging these. Scroll down and watch the video for 'The Screening', it's pretty cool imo. Also also: Anyone have a good rapidshare/megaupload link for REAPER? I can't use torrents on this connection. |
O.k, so, I'm pretty much screwed for a project we have to do for electronics - a project where we have to get a RC buggy to follow an AC line. Comprises of 3 parts; motor control, sensor circuit, and microcontroller. I'm on the microcontroller which is piss easy at first but it means I've gotta program the thing when everyone else has finished their circuits.
And thus lies the problem - neither of the other guys have finished their circuits, both of which are pretty piss easy to be honest. And they've had 10 weeks to make them. We're a week away from the first deadline and I still have yet to program these non-existant circuits. I seriously hate working in groups, it never fucking works. /rant Sup Lod? |
Zeke listen to the link I posted I think you'll like it.

Such a common story. Makes you wonder why tutors assign group tasks when most of them end up similar to what you're saying... The sad fact of the matter is how this not only happens with school assignments, it's all throughout life. In your working life you'll quite often be part of a team where several members may not be pulling their weight. So it's not only the challenge and learned skills from the assignment, its the challenge and learned skills that comes from people management. My advice would be to get a dog up them. Don't except to make any friends out of these lazy cunts, but if you do nothing and end up failing the assignment then they'll not likely be high on your friends list anyway. Meh |
Ordered a DiMarzio Area '58 and Area '67 for the singles of my old Ibanez GRX40. Gonna throw my Super Distortion in the bridge. Almost ordered some Lace Sensors (Gold/Emerald), but decided to keep it in the family.

Last group project I did they had the good sense to appoint a group leader whose responsibility it was to make sure everything was done, in return for getting a much more favourable mark scheme.
Worked out pretty well. There were 10 of us but I think everybody submitted a decent section within 2-3 days of the deadline. |
Yeah, mainly because I like supporting bands that I like. Odd that.
I just find it funny he's been posting the same music over and over for YEARS on here, for free. now you're sat in your room eager to get your hands on a shitty version of a bunch of songs you've been hearing for years. |
It'll need compression and filtering out of the lows anyways.
+1 everything will... I even high pass kick. Unless you've got a pretty $weet monitoring chain, you probably aren't even hearing all the lows your mic's are picking up, but it's there eating up all your headroom. btw, I'm rockin beyer dt770m's and I love them for tracking/mixing drums. You can get the non-M version and save some money (I hear they sound even a little bit better) but they don't have as much noise attenuation. |
and The Pacific, which I've got on Sky+ but haven't got around to watching yet, is it as good as Band of Brothers?
almost. still pretty cool, but imo not as good as band of brothers. you'll see. |
I've been reading about the 770's and apparently the 2005 pro 250 edition is the best or something (if amped). All the others are really scooped and have fatiguing highs. But either way I find beyers uncomfortable for long periods :P
I've got a sub for mixing but I usually cut off the un-needed ends of intruments |
mine aren't scooped, just very unflattering. They sound good when you put good sounds into them, go figure... lol.
|
sup lod just got back from the gym. for some reason the tv's were set on nickelodeon, so i got to watch dora the explorer rescue 100 dogs from the dog catcher. then the dog catcher gave up and decided to be a mailman instead.
good times. |

Meh
Yeah, I've always thought that group projects are pretty much doomed to fail, especially where in education the projects in question aren't really big enough to split up or really benefit from anything other than completely solo work. Take this module I'm on about for example. The line following buggy is only half the module.. the other half is *sigh* another group project - but a business one. Which is really an exercise in pulling numbers out of the bloody air. Again, I seem to be the only one doing the work. However, fortunately with that side of the module, we each get interviewed at the end to tell them how wethink the marks should be divided. That's going to be very revealing :P But as for the buggy thing - yeah, I have been bollocking my teammates, we've even got to the point where the technicians are offering to make part of the circuit to make up for the fact our team member sucks so much.
Last group project I did they had the good sense to appoint a group leader whose responsibility it was to make sure everything was done, in return for getting a much more favourable mark scheme. Can't say it's massively helped though, I've been stuck with a poopload of work when some guys are slacking massively. That said, they're gonna get shafted on the marks. Well and truly.
Zeke listen to the link I posted I think you'll like it.
Hmm, kinda cool to start with but kinda reminds me of the boring bits of isis, of which I'm not really a fan. Might have to listen to another couple of tracks... |
