It's on the list of things to do.

I'll be saying goodbye to the Carvin amp, the Aria, the Ibanez Roadstar II, BBE 362, 5-space rack case, and possibly the Fender J. I still haven't decided about the Fender yet.

That should easily finance the new preamp, amp, and 8-space case, as well as a possible pedal board.

should my band play an open mic night this wednesday?

Pros: another show under our belt, fun
Cons: its 30 miles away, its a very small venue

Nope. Open mic = no money. No money + 30 miles = not worth it. The limited exposure that you might get probably won't be worth the time and effort.

FunkMetalBass 06-29-2009 01:01 PM

I have to disagree. Experience playing in front of a crowd for practice and to get used to varying acoustics and setups = always worth it.

Also, if anybody is interested in any of the stuff I'll be putting up for sale on CL and TB, July 11, let me know.

Crapdragoon 06-29-2009 01:29 PM

i agree with funkmetalbass 100%

always take every opp you have to play, as long as it is not a financial burden of course ;)

Gattsu347 06-29-2009 01:37 PM

well gas there and back would only be 15 bucks at the most. its located in a weathy asian neighborhood, so idk if anyone would even show up at all, chinese have no taste for music.

You'd be surprised. I've met people who don't look like they'd have any business being in the clubs I've played, but then after 20 minutes of speaking to them, I find that they have such vast music and gear knowledge.

Just go play the show. It might be a great opportunity to work with an acoustic set if you wanted to.

it actually looks pretty cool

i'd do it. i dont play shows to make money, i play because i like playing.

Gattsu347 06-29-2009 03:41 PM

i feel most comfortable playing on stage. we suck at recording

FunkMetalBass 06-29-2009 03:54 PM
My dual amp setup rules.
I figure that it wont really matter what amp I'm running as long as it can produce the power I need and I am able to run both channels individually of each other.

Plus, I need the rack room for my other sh*t, and it's already fairly heavy.

It is a lot harder to record than play live. You need to play perfectly on record, little string buzzes and stuff are totally forgiveable live.

FunkMetalBass 06-29-2009 04:34 PM

I need to get better at making logos and stuff for the band.

Seriously. Recording really lets you see where your technique fails miserably.

It lets you see every fault you have as a musician. Rhythm problems, technique problems, and anything you can think of.

Oh, of course, that was implied.

I know I have an aggressive attack, and I shudder to think of all the clicking that I'm going to hear when we record some of our faster stuff.

I think if I roll off my treble a bit, it will be less noticeable and hopefully work well with the overall sound.

Spaceman Spiff 06-29-2009 05:02 PM

I think I need to lighten up on my attack a bit, too. And I need to clean up my fretting technique when I'm doing certain chords. Sometimes I just get little buzzes and squeals that I need to work on correcting.

fatbandit 06-29-2009 05:20 PM

I like that clicking for some aggressive sounding stuff. Listen to Mudvayne and you'll hear him playing right through the strings and getting massive 'clicky' noises. And I would never say Ryan Martinie has bad technique.

Spaceman Spiff 06-29-2009 05:23 PM

I haven't paid much attention to his technique, but that's mainly because I don't like Mudvayne.

fatbandit 06-29-2009 05:24 PM

Oh, and my setup at the moment (minus pedals) is right here:

http://i39.tinypic.com/316akox.jpg

The Mudvayne was just an example - plenty of bassists I like have clicky sounds going down in their tone.

Sablate McNuff 06-29-2009 06:33 PM

It's true, it can sound good, but there are times when I think it's unacceptable, and I don't like being in a sitauation where I feel like I can't control that (tooo much speed!).

Martinie uses a plethora of different techniques and timbres on his bass. I've seen him play fingerstyle with his plucking hand up on the fretboard near the 15th fret! Pretty awesome.

Sablate McNuff 06-29-2009 06:34 PM

Sorry nobody is buying your bass, Chris.

If it had a more aggressive sound, I would likely pick it up.

why is that awesome

gaslight 06-29-2009 08:57 PM

Gives a pretty nice sound but yeah technique wise it isn't really any harder than playing over the pick-ups.

Electric Requiem 06-30-2009 12:40 AM
