A music school before/after college makes a huge difference. To be honest most "rock stars" if not born naturally gifted, went to a big music school once in their life.

Music Colleges(or atleast the big ones) have pretty high standards I'd say to get into. I visited alot of private schools around here, Potsdam, Manhattanville, Boston Berkelee and you need to seriously have talent. For alot of the schools you need to audition by playing a piece of your choice, and then they give you a piece of music to play determining on your instrument. This is even if your going in to be a recording mixer or taking the business side on the music scene.

Funny, I don't think of those guys as rock stars, I think of them as technically talented musicians who don't sell many CDs. Most rockstars don't go to music school. Most technically talented musicians have some schooling yes, but it's not necessary to be technically talented and technical talent sure as hell doesn't automatically equal good in my book.

Being a good musician is being able to write good music. Technical talent and theory help a ****load. I wouldn't be able to write anything that I've written if not for the lessons I've taken and theory I've learned, even if it's marginal.

Talent doesn't make good music. Talent makes good music better.

Yes and no. Most people can't sit and listen to a Satriani or Vai CD all the way through because it's not the most fun to listen to usually. Their technical skills aren't holding them back, but their emphasis on them in their music is. I figure most classic rock bands have sold more records than them, and almost no classic rock musicians went to music school. Most of them revolutionized music without that education too.
