During the Spring semester in 2007, I plan to develop a set of algorithms that document and database audio signals for use in the Situated Communication Group’s sound table project as part of the Arts and Media Engineering program. The sound table is an exploratory interface for exploring both interior and exterior sound environments through sounds recorded at different locations and times. Sounds will be segmented and tagged with features of special relevance to environmental sound such as loudness, spectral centroid, normalized bandwidth, harmonicity, temporal sparsity, spectral sparsity, and transient index. The sound table presents audio and visual feedback to the user as they explore it without an instruction set. The user’s actions determine the feedback from the table. The interdisciplinary nature of the table project allows the table to act as a tool for research into the human condition and humanity. Users’ exploration of the sound space created on the table will be documented and used to review relationships between sounds in the environment as well as sound relations based on factors such as location and time. When SkySong, the ASU Scottsdale Innovation Center, opens, the sound table project will be presented there for the community to use and explore. The community’s use of the project will facilitate learning about the community and humans through their actions in the exploratory sound space. Since all the user will be given is the table, a cursor to control the table, and time to explore, all aspects of use will be studied to examine what elements of sound users like, and what elements they dislike, what makes one sound similar to another, what is appealing to different classifications of users. During the Spring 2007 semester, my role in the project will be to create a database for all of the sounds that will exist in the sound interface of the table. I will also implement a series of tags that will be attributed to the sound data in the database; tags will be created both automatically and by users. Tags will be used to associate similar sounds and to explore the relationships and similarities in sounds. By the end of the semester the database will be prepared for real time interaction with users, so that users can record a new sound in real time through a microphone array near the table, tag it and explore it in the sound table.
