OR buckley.
I can't even decide whether to label Jeff Buckley as a good vocalist or not. Grace is nice, but I've heard some of his older, heavier stuff (like a cover of "kickout the jams") and heard some of the worst singing I'll ever hear.

jpj 12-15-2005 04:39 PM

Stupid, I'm not gonna head butt the sidewalk.

I fooled you!

robo2448 12-15-2005 05:17 PM

It's between Daltrey and Lennon for me. I love Buckley's voice but I prefer both of them to him. It's been a good afternoon. I'm in a Bob Dylan mood and I've been reading Chronicles and watching No Direction Home.

JonG 12-15-2005 05:55 PM

I voted Buckley.

Woodstock, you should've bought it :)

I had a job last summer. Saved up and bought my SG, this summer I hope to make more, and buy unlimited items!!11arghhh

I need a new avatar. Ideas?

DeusExMachina 12-15-2005 06:02 PM

I would've voted Buckley, but I really don't think he'll need my help to go through, so I went with Gilmour.

Your Willy Wonka avatar was awesome.

Glitterati 12-15-2005 06:09 PM

I need a job. Badly.

I voted for Buckley. How Bon Scott got into the same poll as him is beyond me.

thats not exactly and old song of his. he'd been covering that song up until he died. and its not exactly bad singing, its just not the same style so it doesnt sound right. grace is the greatest vocal album ever though. through and through.

a lot of the classic rock vocalists are average or get pushed through due to fanboyism. lennon and gilmour most notably. there's no way that the distance between him and buckley should be so close. its ridiculous. if buckley doesnt get through this round i'll probably leave mx for a while. its nothing childish, it just frustrates me to no end that he gets no recognition. there's no way that he shouldnt be in the top 5 vocalists but i know he wont. and steve perry didnt even get into the polls did he? thats absurd. even if i dont like journey i can tell that he's a very talented vocalist.

JonG 12-15-2005 07:58 PM

I'm back to the old avatar again.

I just listened to "Quicksilver", the album, not the s/t by QMS. It's way better then the first time I listened to it.

"The Truth" is a good song.

Glitterati 12-15-2005 08:16 PM

Err, I voted Thom Yorke.

/gets kicked out of CR thread

Speaking of modern rock, anyone like Rage Against The Machine? I just rediscovered this awesome '90s rap-metal band, and was wondering if anyone else ITT likes them.

np: Rage Against The Machine - Vietnow

PinkFreud 12-15-2005 08:19 PM

eh. de la rocha annoys me. i actually prefer audioslave.

and i also prefer early faith no more for rap/rock.

Lunch 12-15-2005 08:23 PM

I really like RATM. And there's no way Lennon of Gilmour should be beating Daltrey.

JonG 12-15-2005 08:25 PM

McCartney>Lennon and Gilmour
Daltrey=McCartney

PinkFreud 12-15-2005 08:27 PM

i woul agree with that.

buckley=cornell=patton>everyone else

Broken Arrow 12-15-2005 08:29 PM

I really like Gilmour. I voted for him too.

I used to really like RATM, still like 'em though.

blue3 12-15-2005 08:29 PM

I like RATM, and Audioslave too. I saw them live actually. Cornell is an awesome singer, but he's not that great at rapping..

Lunch 12-15-2005 08:30 PM
McCartney>Lennon and Gilmour
Daltrey=McCartney
McCartney doesn't hold a candle to Daltrey, but at least you agree they're better than Gilmour.

PinkFreud 12-15-2005 08:34 PM

daltrey had control problems. he also lacked range. mccartney is only inferior to daltrey in terms of power and even there, he's no slouch.

Lunch 12-15-2005 08:35 PM
daltrey had control problems. he also lacked range. mccartney is only inferior to daltrey in terms of power and even there, he's no slouch.
Control problems? Armenia and the whole Tommy album (actually most of Sell Out as well) would beg to differ. His range isn't fantastic, but I can't see how McCartney that much better. And Daltrey's Power>>>>>>McCartney's.

robo2448 12-15-2005 08:36 PM

I actually think McCartney beats Daltrey technically. As PinkFreud said, he beats Daltrey pretty easily in range. But Daltrey has the most powerful voice ever, and it suited The Who perfectly. McCartney has great power too, but nobody can come close to Daltrey when it comes to that IMO. Of course Keith Moon beats them both.

he sounds like he's straining every time i listen to tommy. its not pleasant to my ears.

i still like him though.

Broken Arrow 12-15-2005 08:38 PM

This conversation inspired me to listen to "Why Don't We Do it in the Road" I think that has some of Mcartney's best singing no matter how much of a filler song it is.

Lunch 12-15-2005 08:39 PM

I've never heard any signs of noticeable strain, but to each his own.

I really can't believe that Gilmour is beating Daltrey. I think I have just lost any faith I had in this forum.

PinkFreud 12-15-2005 08:42 PM

gilmour does not really sing that well. plain and simple. i agree. daltrey should be above him.

robo2448 12-15-2005 08:42 PM
This conversation inspired me to listen to "Why Don't We Do it in the Road" I think that has some of Mcartney's best singing no matter how much of a filler song it is.
I agree. I like most of the filler on The White Album. I used to hate Wild Honey Pie but even that's growing on me now. I like all the songs on it now.

Another thing in Daltrey's favor is that Pete Townsend had pretty good range and could handle a lot of the higher notes so Daltrey didn't need outstanding range.

Edit- I love Gilmour but prefer Daltrey to him by a lot.

PinkFreud 12-15-2005 08:44 PM

love reign o'er me and wont get fooled again are daltrey's shining moments.

Broken Arrow 12-15-2005 08:47 PM

Haha, I prefer Gilmour because I dont care about talent or range as you guys.

Can't you tell? I'm a Neil Young fan!

/low-blow to favourite artist

PinkFreud 12-15-2005 08:49 PM

zing!

yeah, technically he's pretty bad. haha.
Harsh. If I'm listening to a song by him (like After The Goldrush) and his voice breaks, my sister always laughs at me/him.

I think Daltrey is overrated, as great as The Who are. I prefer Lennon/McCartney.

robo2448 12-15-2005 08:57 PM

Quadrophenia is so great. Probably Daltrey's shining moment as a singer, probably the greatest drumming album that I have ever heard, some of Entwistle's greatest bass playing, and the plot line is much better than Tommy's. The only fault I can find is the synthesizers. On most of the album, the synthesizers work really well but sometimes get a little annoying. I still prefer Tommy but Q is pretty amazing too.

np- Love Reign O'er Me

Lunch 12-15-2005 09:00 PM
love reign o'er me and wont get fooled again are daltrey's shining moments.
And See Me, Feel Me live anywhere. Daltrey is a fantastic rock singer, plain and simple. He certainly shouldn't be the best vocalist on any list because of his limitations. But his overall ability in just one area is good enough for him be top 10, especially in R&M.

DeusExMachina 12-15-2005 09:02 PM

Hey, I like Gilmour's singing. He may not be the most technically talented singer, but his voice is really wonderful. I think so, at least.

That being said, I do think Daltrey is an amazing singer as well. I didn't actually notice he was in the poll until after I voted.

Krabsworth 12-15-2005 09:21 PM
McCartney doesn't hold a candle to Daltrey, but at least you agree they're better than Gilmour.
Um Daltrey is totally pwned off his sox by McCartney

Broken Arrow 12-15-2005 09:21 PM

Hey, your not alone. I think Gilmour is a great singer too.

I love the harmonies in songs like Echoes and Breathe.

Lunch 12-15-2005 09:22 PM
Um Daltrey is totally pwned off his sox by McCartney
Yea, except in terms of singing.

Edit: Actually, and most other things too.

Hmmm, that was a truly compelling argument. I'm going to rethink my opinions.
Yeah I bet Daltrey would own Mcartney at sports.
Daltrey would beat the crap out of McCartney too.

He knocked out Pete Townshend in one punch when they were rehearsing for their Quadrophenia tour.

Krabsworth 12-15-2005 09:27 PM
Yeah I bet Daltrey would own Mcartney at sports.
Um, too bad Daltrey didn't make taht grreat of music.
