I would start my reign by banning KittensInMircrowaves for being a douche, and Laihostheman in an attempt to make him spell properly.

I had my second piano lesson this morning, and things are going well I hope. My fingers still trip over each other a fair amount though :-/

Piano is fun. :)

Mazeppa 10-22-2005 07:12 AM

Certainly is. At the moment I'm mainly playing 'dry' music, that is to say that it music that is intended to be played as an excercise. So I'm really looking forward to learning some more interesting music.

It's ok, at least I think you're not talking about me...

So tonight is my homecoming. There's this website where people can request songs except it's in a format so that people can request songs but they can also delete them so people are deleting songs that are "white people" songs. It's just a freaking dance, there is some pretty good rock to dance too...

There aren't too many people I would ban, just that one guy in the Dimebag thread that can't spell and believes it was dimebag's fault he died.

God, I hate not being able to drive right now. The only way to get off-campus is the Saturday shuttle. But it seems this year, the best-kept secret on campus suddenly isn't. Today, I made the mistake of not showing up 20 minutes early, because just as I got there, the last two people got in, packing the shuttle to capacity.

I can't run my errands now, because I already have plans, and there's no way in hell I'd get back in time if I caught the shuttle at the other times.
Miles Davis: Kind of Blue (had to have it. I'm surprised I didn't before)
Kind of Blue gets kind of overrated...it's one of those "need-to-have" albums, but it's far from the Miles album I listen to the most (I listen to Miles Smiles, Bitches Brew, Sketches of Spain, and In a Silent Way a lot more)

As for rep, I have 526. If I ever get stars, watch out, because Jom's going to go on an MX-wide crusade to get rep permanently abolished.

kind of blue is an excellent starter album though. like who's next for the who. or dark side of the moon for pink floyd.

Illmatic 10-22-2005 11:49 AM

I suppose, even though that wasn't the route I went...I think I've only listened to Kind of Blue once or twice the whole way through in my whole life.

Hey, Ray, how do your favourite Miles albums compare to Kind of Blue, I only have that. Not in terms of quality, I mean how do they sound, structure, speed, melody, ...

Wellll...I'm no jazz expert, per se, but In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew (as well as A Tribute to Jack Johnson, another album of his that I like) are more experimental and jazz-fusion-y than any of his more traditional work. They are not the easiest albums to get into...it might be going too far to say that they don't have melody, but they definitely eschew traditional jazz and instead establish kind of layers of sound with solos throughout. If that makes any sense at all.

Miles Smiles is slightly more straightforward, but it never settles into a consistent groove...the melody is very unpredictable (but clearly I mean that in a good way if I call it one of my favorite albums of his) and open-ended.

Sketches of Spain is pretty hard to explain (lolol rhyming). It's not just the Miles Davis Quintet (or Quartet, or Sextet, or what have you; this was recorded after Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley left the group), but he collaborates with the Gil Evans Orchestra, which makes it the most lush album Miles has ever done.

I hope I helped you...

Cain 10-22-2005 12:04 PM

I've been interested in getting Bitches' Brew. It's got a lot of good players on it.

So, Sandman (played by Thomas Hayden Church) and Venom (played by, of all people, Topher Grace) are the villians in the third Spider-Man movie. It seems to me like they're going a little overkill...I hope the elements of the villians that are important (such as the symbiote's previous linking with Spider Man) don't get ignored or short-changed.

I have it, but it was already placed on "metal," so maybe it was there before.

a tribute to jack johnson is my favorite. i started with kind of blue then, and moved on to birth of the cool. after that, i did sketches of spain and moved to his fusiony stuff. i suppose i just thought that kind of blue would be the most accessible or the one with songs that a casual jazz listener would know (so what, freddie freeloader, etc.).

I'm sorry, but I'm having a lot of trouble here picturing Grace as a bad guy, especially Venom at that. I think Church will make a decent villain, though.
