Audacity

It's simple, effective, records directly when a mic is plugged in, and free.

Nah, audacity is pretty bad. It is free, then again. You can't even fix mistakes in a track by starting from the middle of a recording. It creates another track.

well for now i don't need some top notch program. Just something to get some really simple stuff down and get ideas.

Audacity works as long as you aren't releasing the music. You want to consider something with bar lines and such when actually recording something serious.
