ABR is metalcore to all of us and pretty generic to us all. ABRB I have no clue I don't listen to them.

Hardcore is quite different than those bands.

Hey guys, help me out. I'm looking at doing a student exchange program either next year or the following year. I had a look at the schools offered, and a couple in New Jersey stood out to me, mainly because they're both really really close to NYC. The first is Montclair State University and the second is William Paterson. The estimated cost of living for these two was by far the cheapest and living near NYC is way appealing. Does anyone have any information that could help me? What are these universities like? Is public transport in the area good?

If I decide to go to the US for exchange, I'll probably go in two years so I'm 21 when I go (unless most shows don't have age restrictions? If that's the case I don't care). I'm also considering Glasgow and Leeds, but they're a lot more expensive.

Apparently barely anyone in Australia goes on exchange, which is not at all surprising to me, but that fact has made me think that I'd really like to do one.

WP, never been on the campus or know anyone who goes there but I've never really thought highly about it. If you're looking into NJ schools (I wouldn't if I was from another country) try to find ones near train stations because they can get you to either NYC or Philly in a decent manner (15 bucks round trip if its off peak, maybe I forget). Definitely look more into the social aspect of the school, because if your abroad is anything like mine then the actually classes are almost meaningless. Cost of living will be roughly the same anywhere in NJ/NYC area, and since you're coming from Aus then everything will seem cheaper to you (well everything here is more expensive to me). Try looking into some schools that are in NY but outside of the city and have a train/bus line in because most of the schools in NJ don't have a typical college experience (out of the ones I've been to).



I climbed the Sydney Harbor Bridge today, fun as hell and had a sick view. I have one group photo of a bunch of random people I don't know and my friend but I won't be able to scan it till I'm home, all the other photos with my friend were like 40 bucks so eff that. Tomorrow gonna head to the beach and just chill/pass out on it.

Very very few hardcore shows AREN'T all ages in the US.

Yeah both of those schools aren't held in high regard here in the US. What are your other choices?

My friend says that in Glasgow, people beat you up if you aren't Scottish. Is this true? I've heard that Glasgow is quite rough but it's recently changed for the better. I've always wanted to go there and I'd love to study there.

There's one in San Antonio is as well, but Texas seems kind of crazy to me. I definitely want to be in/near a city seeing as where I live now is basically the epitome of middle class suburbia.

I dunno. I want to go somewhere close to a large city, and somewhere with seasons. I've missed having an actual contrast between seasons so much since leaving Boston.

Maybe I should be considering Europe. I want to move to the US for a couple of years after I finish my degree so maybe it would be better somewhere else. This wouldn't be until second semester 2009 or first semester 2010 so I have a while.

The obvious good ones out of those are Purdue and UF. They are both within the top 100 Universities in the US. I've never been to Indiana. Um, Gainesville where UF is, is about an hour away from Orlando which is mickey mouse world. But yeah I mean apparently the classes don't matter much, but it would be a lot nicer to visit a major city in the US.

Also I would recommend if you come here to live a couple years to go for a masters while you are at it.

Oh and if I remember correctly you are studying journalism or communications right?

UF's programs for that SUCK. So I highly not recommend it. It's a state school where a lot of people go to do like pre-meds, pre-chem and **** like that.

As far as Cal States go... if you're looking for a big city then San Diego State or San Francisco would be your choices. I go to Fullerton which is about 45 minutes outside LA, in "The OC"... 5 minutes from Disneyland if that gives you perspective. Its cool but its a commuter school in suburbia. Avoid LA like the plague. If I were you I'd go with the NJ school near Philly. Philly is an amazing city as long as you don't go to the stabby parts and has a very vibrant music scene as well.

America kinda sucks right now though too. I would go to Europe personally given the option.

Yeah, I guess I'm not really too bothered about classes as long as they're not totally awful. And I'm doing journalism, yeah. I would definitely consider doing a masters, but I'd want to come over to work. For some reason Americans really seem to like having Australians come over and work there, because the government in America made these visas a couple of years ago called E3 visas or something. They're specifically for Australians with bachelor degrees to work in America for two years or so.

Yeah LA is ****ed as far as I'm concerned. My perception of it may be totally wrong but when I was about 8 years old my family and I stayed with some family friends in LA. They were going to lend us their car but it got stolen on the first night we were there. They were just totally indifferent to it as well, they were like "oh that's a shame now you don't have a car to use".

Philly interests me. I visited it for a few days 8 years ago and I enjoyed it there.

I know America kinda sucks as well, but to me Australia, or at least where I'm living now, is no better for different reasons. I just feel like I need a change, at least for a while and I want to somewhere where like, stuff happens.

Rowan University is a pretty good up and coming school. Its not a big state school or anything (still has like 10,000 kids) but the campus is nice and its like a 30 min train ride from philly, I almost went there instead of Rutgers.

I did get lost in the ghetto of philly two years ago going to This Is Hardcore, had to stop on some road cause a few black kids were playing stickball or something, it was weird but those places aren't near all the touristy places. Also NYC is like 2 hours away which is fine for a day trip or even a weekend trip.

I didn't have to write a statement but I did have to write a like 1 page essay on going abroad. I just wrote about how Brisbane has a very large music scene and how into music I am, also about how I liked to travel and this is a once in a life time chance.
