Classical guitar
Or 'the sechs' as it's sometimes known
Smooth. ABRSM, I assume? It's in the classifieds section coz that was really the only section of the forums dedicated to specific regions, e.g. UK, so it made the most sense for a UK threat to be in the area of the forums dedicated to the UK |
i guess, and yea you don't get any trolls in here do you
i want to take up classical guitar, jesusfinger how much sight reading do you do in grade 8? i'd be so terrible at that |
kiddymeister you say?
|
Aye, ABRSM. I've done grades 1, 3, 5, 6 Trinity, and now 8 ABRSM. I only took 6 with Trinity because I was still waiting for my ABRSM grade 5 theory results, which you need to have passed before they'll let you progress further.
Peon: A good sight reading practice is piano music, believe it or not. If you pick a hand's part to have a go at (right hand probably, left hand's normally in a shitty bass clef, not great for playing on guitar). It's good because musically it's similar to guitar (piano and guitar are two of a very, very small number of instruments, in that they can accompany themselves. I've heard the guitar called 'the piano of the strings', which is pretty gay. True enough though). Also, piano music's not fingered for guitar, so you're on your own pretty much. That's how it would be in the exam There's a fair amount at Grade 8. No more than any other later grade, but the difficulty level just gets higher |
Guitar being 'the piano of the strings' amuses me, as, techinically - TECHINICALLY - the piano COULD be classified a string instrument... but also a percussion instrument, as well as (obviously) a keyboard instrument
JF: You got stronger resolution than I do. I did ABRSM grades for piano up to grade 5, actually sat (and passed) the theory exam, and then got bored and moved away from exams and just started playing the pieces I want to play. Ironically, my playing is now at diploma level, but I just didn't have the patience to sit the exams. That'll change, though - during my gap year, I'm gonna get that elusive grade 8, then go for a DipABRSM in either performing or teaching, not sure which yet. Teaching would be more useful - that way, I've always got something to fall back on to make me bread, but you need grade 6 theory for a teaching diploma... long :( |
That's what I'm doing, I'm on my gap year now. I've actually already passed grade 8, but if I get a distinction I can transfer to the more prestigous BMus course at Uni in the second year. I'd like to take the diploma, but I guess that'll either come or I can take it after uni
|
Of course, a DipABRSM is only necessary if you're gonna teach with an aim to enter your students to ABRSM exams - I believe you don't need any diplomas and whatnots to enter students for Guildhall & Trinity exams
|
I could enter myself
I think it's only necassary for the teacher to enter the students up to a certain age, but there's probably an ABRSM reward per pass or something |
so, do you play more contemporary guitar styles too, or just classical?
|
For the exam there's Bach, Giullianni and Turina
http://www.free-scores.com/download-sheet-music.php?pdf=784 That's the Turina. That and the Guiliani are 20th century I think |
Sheet music, wtf is that?
|
hey thread
going to see Joe Satriani today  no word yet from my guitar exam place. i keep thinking about it and doubting myself more and more. |
