The first year (and second year, if you aren't lucky) always blow(s). The Freshmen Fifteen is more of a myth than the inevitable having-good-roommates-but-a-crappy-living-situation deal.

Well I know there are a couple friends of mine I would not like to room with, but I'd rather room with a good friend then some guy i don't know very well or at all.

You have to meet new people somehow. You're not going to get much out of your higher education experience if you don't expand your social circles. Rooming with your high school buds is fine down the road, but even the tightest of friends have disagreements over living situations/arrangements that first year. It's a stressful time for everybody, so you don't need to compound it by having a few weeks destroy the years you've known each other.

Well the thing about friends is that you often get along with them great when you hang out, but you never realize they have this bad habit that drives you crazy. Maybe they leave clothes in the living room. Maybe they never clean their dishes. etc. It's stuff you'd never know until you live with someone...so sometimes someone you don't know is better because you don't have to like them later.
