Jaundice 09-02-2009 05:23 PM

i've thought about it but i think in the long run it would be cooler to make something of myself

masscows 09-02-2009 05:23 PM
you guys should kill yourselves if you think it'll help tbh
no, the world needs people like me telling it there's something wrong with it :D

Jaundice 09-02-2009 05:24 PM

the world needs people like me to write many depraved industrial musics
isn't that why goals are important
not what i meant. goals are a way some people stay happy. other people might never have a goal in life, but they are completely content with themselves.

iamtherobots 09-02-2009 05:30 PM
other species don't need goals because they don't exceed their populations naturally for very long, if ever, and so live in equilibrium with the world around them, dying out or adapting as conditions change. we've pretty much transcended this, or at least we think we have, and our increased comfort/rate of survival=more people reproducing=lower standards to be met in order to reproduce. so we end up with people who are stupid as hell with a sense of entitlement over the rest of the natural world, which has led to overconsumption of natural resources which will eventually lead to the doom of the natural world and ourselves.

/end anti-human manifesto
I think the human race will turn out fine, because thus far we've only shown ability to improve our quality of life in the long run.

masscows 09-02-2009 05:31 PM
The third world isn't better off than people living in the dark ages?
The Feeding 09-02-2009 05:38 PM

basically humans ruin everything

diddn't you learn anything from WALL-E?

masscows 09-02-2009 05:39 PM

wall-e should be required viewing for elementary school students tbh

I haven't actually thought about or debated these topics in a while wow, it's invigorating and depressing at the same time.

I have a feeling that those areas will catch up with the rest of the world at some point.

Txus 09-02-2009 05:50 PM

Nah, they won't.

nevertoolate 09-02-2009 05:50 PM

I dont think so, the world has had the time and money for a very very long time and nothing significant has changed or progressed. It is quite disgusting really

masscows 09-02-2009 05:52 PM

It's possible I guess. As long as the Earth's population doesn't get much bigger than it is now I don't see the world ending anytime soon, and it's been shown that as nations industrialize their populations level off and it seems like at least some steps are being taken towards making industry at large more sustainable so who knows.

(I definitely don't...)

I like Linkola's solution:

scroll down to "Solutions". It's a little whacky but it's like, just crazy enough.

iamtherobots 09-02-2009 05:52 PM

Progress takes centuries. But yeah, nobody knows, and just because the past few hundred years haven't shown global improvement, doesn't mean that there hasn't been vast improvement of the human condition, and that there won't be improvement for the impoverished.

The Feeding 09-02-2009 05:52 PM

Humans as a whole just use and use until nothing is left, such will be the demise of us in the end...nothing will be left anywhere

iamtherobots 09-02-2009 05:55 PM

Yeah, that's why we came up with crop rotation... that's why we sanction off areas of wildlife for preservation... because we use and use until nothing is left.

I mean, ****, if that was true, there'd be no farmland in the world anymore.

RouteOne 09-02-2009 05:57 PM
The third world isn't better off than people living in the dark ages?
Well, if you compare the Dark age to a lot of 3rd world countries, odds are the dark age people would have more structure and law in their societies. Probably less hunger too.

The Feeding 09-02-2009 05:57 PM

We have gotten better, but it took a while for us to realize the err of our ways

Nostalgia 09-02-2009 05:59 PM

Peopleare already fighting over usable water. There's going to be about another billion people on Earth in ~30 years, and where they're going to find drinkable/usable water for all of them is a mystery.
if we just go green everything will be ok
lol I love people with "green" mindsets. They think if you just buy a hybrid or recycle you're actually helping. Nothing will help.

adb 09-02-2009 06:00 PM

sup bros, talkin' bout Misanthropy?

Bottom line is I don't hate anyone, I'm selective with the people I talk to and trust.

AA-12 09-02-2009 06:01 PM

going green is a trend that is actually good though.

it's political posturing and ego-inflation, not a whole lot more

I mean there's nothing wrong with someone wanting to live more sustainably, I guess it's cool for a person to do as much as they can to help even if it isn't very much.

I know, I don't think people realize that using energy efficient bulbs and green shopping bags doesn't do anything - the type of damage that needs to be repaired doesn't start with where you throw your trash.

no but on a grand scale it won't do anything, it's just there to create the social illusion that you're helping. You know, give you a feeling of empowerment even though 99% of efforts normal citizens are capable of are completely useless.

RouteOne 09-02-2009 06:04 PM

It all just leads back to too many people existing. I'm not a misanthropist, but that is the problem. Too many people that consume.

adb 09-02-2009 06:05 PM

agree with Ron once again

AA-12 09-02-2009 06:06 PM

i don't really see how it's useless on a long term scale. if people consider the environment more often because of movements like that, the future could definitely benefit. the point isn't really making things better now, it's forming a better mindset overall.

Nostalgia 09-02-2009 06:08 PM

Well yeah, definitely. Most greenists manipulate statistics by saying **** like "over 5 million trashbags are used every second" but it's not as if it's people are just overusing them, that's just the amount of waste that piles up when you're supporting in extraordinary amount of people.

If we want to talk about waste, how 'bout the island of trash that's the size of Texas floating in the ocean? Can't remember where it's at.

adb 09-02-2009 06:09 PM

I highly doubt pollution is going to be the downfall of Earth

Well, I think we are talking about two different tings. Being environmentally aware is good. However, a lot of this "go green" stuff is just a fad. People who think that hybrids, reusable shopping bags, and energy efficient light bulbs will stop our devastating consumption are not seeing the problem for the long term. These things just work for short term goals.

As long as we are past Earth's carrying capacity (which we passed years ago), no amount of hybrids or light bulbs will really solve anything.

Nostalgia 09-02-2009 06:13 PM

no one said it would be.

RouteOne 09-02-2009 06:16 PM

In the end, I think things will get to the point where we'll have to revert back to a much simpler lifestyle.

See: the Amish.

AA-12 09-02-2009 06:16 PM

RouteOne 09-02-2009 06:17 PM
