Not true. Soccer did emerged first by Europeans wanting to sharpening there skills for war. "Mob" Football emerged not too far after as basically a kill the carrier game.

Soccer isn't even declared as a sport in the 'states really. Hockeys television ratings even did better then the MLS and the only thing that really was watched is soccer during the world cup if anyone can watch the games at 4 am in the morning here...
