Envy - All the Footprints You've Ever Left Behind and the Fear Expecting Ahead
Eric Dolphy - Out to Lunch Calexico - Hot Rail The Go! Team - Thunder Lightning Strike Make up for the fact that I bought a new game only to find out that the PS2 isn't working properly to play it this 3 day weekend. |
Phish!
- I've been highly addicted to Phish ever since my friend got my in to them this year. But I just got into them after they broke up (which sucks). I did see Trey Anastasio (lead singer of Phish) in concert and that has gotten me hooked on more Phish and his solo stuff more!

Eric Dolphy - Out to Lunch
I found the title tune in a fake book last night. I was so excited, until I realized that it's kind of tough to play. |

Blackalicious - Blazing Arrow
Refused - The Shape of Punk To Come Beastie Boys - Hello Nasty Public Enemy - Yo! Bum Rush The Show I'm still looking for an album to become obessed with that's new, but all this hip-hop is filling in the time very nicely. |
I've been digging Mark Lanegan. I got his album Whiskey and the Holy Ghost and it's crazy cool.
Also been digging Afghan Whigs. I got my hands on Congregation, and it's pretty good. Just when you're thinking that they would never cover a song from Jesus Christ Superstar, they go ahead and do just that. Also been on the Cure and American Music Club and Fleetwood Mac and some other stuff. |
Me's diggin Sigur Ros and Explosions in the Sky today
and Queen - Don't Stop Me Now
I was listening to that song today too, due to me watching Shaun of the Dead earlier. |

Oh, I got all the music channels back today after months without them, so I sat and watched them for a bit.
The new Foo Fighters single is seriously awesome. The new White Stripes is worryingly good, too. New Coldplay blows worse than I expected. And Funeral For A Friend have sunk to a new low. |
The new Foo Fighters single is seriously awesome. The new White Stripes is worryingly good, too.
I new the White Stripes new stuff would be good, but the Foos are a surprise. I'd like to hear it. |
I'm on Soulseek now if you wanna get it off me.
I'm Iai. With a capital I. |

The new Foo Fighters single is seriously awesome.
Is it an acousticy one, or a full band one?
The new White Stripes is worryingly good, too.
It better be, they've used a good potential name for their new album.
New Coldplay blows worse than I expected.
I saw them play the new single on TOTP (yeah, boo if you like), and..yeah. |
There was a little SOAD live show on MTV late at night. It wasn't bad for a half-hour concert snippet, even though all the songs they showed were from Toxicity except "BYOB."
Fun fact for all other nu-metal bands: you are allowed to move around when onstage! It's nice to see a bit of charisma every once in a while. |
I saw them play the new single on TOTP (yeah, boo if you like), and..yeah.
Hey man, I watch TOTP every week. Popworld, too. The Foos song I'm talking about is Best Of You, and it's a full band one. I heard an acoustic one on Jules Holland, though, and that sounded really good too. |
Foo Fighters last album was decent.
I think there acoustic disc will be great. |
I'm on Soulseek now if you wanna get it off me.
I'm Iai. With a capital I.
I don't have soulseek on this computer. |

I thought the guitar thing it had going throughout it was pretty good, but for the most part the song itself sounded a bit bland. I'm interested in hearing the acoustic disc, though. |
My dad bought Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue and John Coltrane - Blue Train today. So, I'm going to make an attempt to be digging those in the near future.
|
They're remarkable and undeniable.

I've actually been meaning to ask you about some jazz albums, Zappa.
The reason he bought those, was because I was searching through his CD collection looking for jazz. I've been trying to get into it recently, but my selection is lacking. If you had to pick one jazz album/artist, what would be the best for a beginner? |
That's really tough. I think it's unbelievably important for a listener to get to know the work of Ellington and George Gershwin, which is something I neglected for a very long time. It puts the rest of the jazz world into perspective and into a certain context, I feel.
However, the best way to enjoy any style of music is to find things you enjoy by chance and focus on that. What you like is what you like, regardless of how "important" the music is historically, or whatever. I hope you enjoy Kind of Blue and Blue Train, but I find it hard to fathom not being enthusiastic towards such recordings. |
Hm, well I'll look into that. I'll listen to one of those albums later tonight when I head off to bed. I'll most likely start with MD.
|
Yeah, I know that was sort of a non-answer. It's not easy cracking into a new music, and it's not any different with jazz. There's no magic album you can listen to that will suddenly make you a jazz fan. Getting into the genre really happens by listening to as much as you can, and reading reviews and liner notes when you run out of ideas for new things to listen to. What's nice about jazz is that when you hear a player you like, he's likely playing with 4 or 5 other dudes, at least. These other dudes make great jumping off points when you're interested in hearing something new. I'm still reading up on new players constantly, because I always want to expand my understanding of the music I love so much.

I'm digging this Iron & Wine album Endless Numbered Days. It's the first Iron & Wine's album I ever heard and it's beautiful, I'm hooked.
Also right now I'm listening to The Flaming Lips Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots |
I've been listening to Millencolin's new album, Kingwood, today a lot. It's a pretty solid pop-punk album imo.
I've also just started getting into Jedi Mind Tricks. Also, Gorillaz- s/t I Mother Earth- Scenery & Fish Ryan Adams- Love is Hell |
Everybody I know told me that the new Foo's song was terrible, and I was expecting garbage, but I really dig it. Looking forward to the new album more than I was expecting to now.

This is true. While I am no jazz expert, one of my jazz expert music teachers said that the best way to get into jazz is to just go from the beginning and follow the progression of the style. Do you have a jazz radio station IHU? The one in my area plays great stuff all of the time. It's a dodgy station, but it plays awesome music all the time. This is shallow comment, but I really hate very old jazz recordings with vocals. I hate the way they are distorted and they are so ear piercing. Anyway, I've been listening to nothing but hip-hop for the last few days. Today I'm in love with "A Grand Don't Come For Free". "Empty Cans" is an amazing song. |
^ Sometimes.
I like Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday's vocals very much. Billie Holiday especially. She makes me squirm. 'Specially the cover of Gloomy Sunday. |
Of course I was generalising. I love Louie's vocals. I haven't heard too much Billie Holiday.

Nice avatar. I need to get that album. I went to Boston this past weekend and listened to: Explosions in the Sky The Pixies Syd Barrett Circle Takes the Square ...and I am just now getting into the Arcade Fire for the 50th time. I keep forgetting how good they are. |
