Mustaine confuses me. One minute he's over it, the next he's moaning again.
yeah hes a little puto like that

Britton 04-19-2006 11:18 AM

I'm not sure I've told ya'll this...and I'm not sure you really want to know it either...but anyway...

my family is remodeling our house and doing all this stuff that really we could probably do without. So anyway we hired this dude to come in and help us (we are paying him a great deal of money) and he shows up late everyday he never answers his phone my dad can never get a straight answer as to when this stupid project is gonna be done. Our frekain house is torn apart and this guy is super annoying.

So anyway the other day I was listening to St. Anger and this guy tells my parents something to the effect of "I would really rather not have to listen to this music that worships saten"....whoa! wait one frickin minute buddy...

So Now my dad is like "So what's up with Metallica worshipping saten?" so I've been searching for stuff on St. Anger that will prove my point which is: St. Anger is a album about controlling your anger...not worshipping saten or any other god for that matter.

but all I can find is this http://www.encycmet.com/songs/songs.shtml now I'm sure there is other stuff out there (I've seen it before)

Do ya'll think I should just show them Some Kinda monster?

any help would be great

Jev 04-19-2006 11:21 AM

Maybe you should tell them to stop being retarded. Let them read the lyrics. They aren't satanic.
In fact, find some real satanic stuff and show them it.

Rattlehead 04-19-2006 11:28 AM

the dude who was fixing his house wasn't pissed at the lyrics. it was the music. he's probably a strong Catholic or something. the Church of England labled certain musical phrases to be linked with satanicism, such as the Devil's Interval(an album from my band:P) etc. and St. Anger is probably full of such musical phrases. don't get me wrong, he's being a hyper-sensitive tit, but still, now you can see where he's coming from.

Jev 04-19-2006 11:31 AM

No certain religious groups deem anything containing guitars and long hair as satanic.

Rattlehead 04-19-2006 11:34 AM

another reason.

Britton 04-19-2006 01:52 PM
No certain religious groups deem anything containing guitars and long hair as satanic.
He actually plays guitar (kinda) He just heard the lyric "St. Anger round my neck" and assumed it was something it isn't

I gave my dad all my Tallica cd's so he could read the lyrics and listen to them if he wanted to but I don't think he has even looked at them. So I'm gona E-mail him the lyrics.

I was wondering if you guys had any video interviews where James talks about what the album is about.

vashts80 04-19-2006 02:44 PM
calm down mate, i wasn't mad or anything, i was just not sure about your wording. just curious!

and as i have already said, i don't doubt jason's ability in bass playing. so you won't need to tell me for the umpteenth time about how brilliant a musician he is.

you are probably right about him being the new kid on the block. so much so that his bass is literally inaudible. did he play in any other ajfa songs? *doubtful*

and jasons ideas were shot down because they didn't suit metallica. so its justified. <---- appropriate word usage
Uhm. I would just like to say that you shouldn't talk anymore.

Newsted wrote about 90% of the songs on Flotsam and Jetsam's first album by himself. That was the same year that he joined Metallica.

He wrote the main riff to Blackened. Hence why he has writing credits.

It's possible to hear bass on AJFA. I've heard it. It's there. Trust me.

They turn the bass down anymore live and it will be inaudible. That's not good.

Anything else I should address?

PepsiMetal 04-19-2006 02:50 PM

The bass guitar in AJFA is really not audible. It does have bass, especially during chorus' but not really bass guitar just some random booming and stuff.

Why would a guy fixing your house care or have a say to what you should listen to? lol.

Anyways, clearly there's nothing satanic about metallica. Just print out the lyrics and show them.

And once again, I'm going to say that I've heard the bass guitar in AJFA. If you listen very closely it's not hard.

Rattlehead 04-19-2006 02:54 PM

it bloody is hard! listen for it in Blackened. there is bass.

oh wait

you can't hear it

Thor 04-19-2006 02:54 PM

I still can't hear it, even when I turn the bass way up on my speakers. It just sounds like really bassy guitar and I can't hear any sort of bass tone throughout.

PepsiMetal 04-19-2006 02:56 PM
And once again, I'm going to say that I've heard the bass guitar in AJFA. If you listen very closely it's not hard.
What part of blackened do you exactly hear the bass guitar?
I still can't hear it, even when I turn the bass way up on my speakers. It just sounds like really bassy guitar and I can't hear any sort of bass tone throughout.
Same here. I have a decent speakers, and the only heard bass is during chorus where random crap pops up. That could be lars's bass drum I guess, or it was just digitally added later.

[1]quite justifiedly, fuck off.
[2]....and...?
[3]i don't deny his writing credits... the bit that i wrote that you quoted actually states that i don't deny his musical ability...
[4] you're hearing the bassyness of the guitar. the bass inaudible. trust me.

[6]your stupidity.

you are right there is no bass in there.

you hear right. i can't possibly imagine why james/lars turned it all the way down, but they did.

vashts80 04-19-2006 03:19 PM

It's hilarious that somebody is telling me that the bass guitar is inaudible, WHEN I HEAR IT. I AM A BASSIST. I HEAR THE BASS GUITAR.

Should I spell it out in crayon? Listen closely in To Live is To Die, or One. It's there. You have to listen for it.

Rattlehead 04-19-2006 03:27 PM

oh no, caps lock. mate that wont help you. and neither will being a bassist, it wont give you extra ears or anything. i can hear fuck all for bass guitar in it. same anyone else on this thread at the moment. i think you are hearing the extra bassy guitar pronounced at the beginning of notes by Lars' bass pedal.

EDIT - just listened to TLITD and One, and yes there is turned down bass. or at least i think so. hard to tell.the rest, however, have none. or at least justice/blackened/shortest straw don't.

Starting at 5:25 in To Live is To Die. Listen to the background. That's bass.

And yes, it does. My hearing has gotten a lot better since I started playing bass and listening for it.

1.The riff played at 6:25 right after the solo has audible bass, it has overdrive that's what makes it hard to hear.
2.Just listen the intro.
3.Like justice, the bass has some kind of overdrive or distorsion.

Like i said, the bass is only turned down, not eliminated.

Jev 04-20-2006 01:01 AM

I could never pick out the bass most the way through AJFA but I agree there are parts where it's audible.

PepsiMetal 04-20-2006 01:27 AM

It's audible in songs like TLITD and dyer's eve, but definetely not blackened. But who the hell knows what they did to it and why. :(

Wait who produced AJFA? The rasmussen guy?

Jev 04-20-2006 02:20 AM

I believe so. I think the production was the reason they got rid of him.

HazMan 04-20-2006 06:01 AM

 I hear a well defined bass channel in Blackened, and every other song on AJFA. Its sounds different from typical bass in other music but I don't think its particuarly bad, theres a charming old school feel to it.

Sph 04-20-2006 06:01 AM

Yeah, Rasmussen produced AJFA.

As for this bass issue, I can't hear any on Justice but Blackened and The Shortest Straw definately do.

Although, I had to tweak the eq quite a bit.

EDIT: I just had another listen to Justice, and I can hear some bass on there.

Thor 04-20-2006 06:46 AM

I haven't fully listened to Justice in a while, but the next time I do I'll listen closely to see if I can pick up any bass.

You would have to agree that it's mixed way too low though.

HazMan 04-20-2006 06:49 AM

I agree its mixed low, but its there clear as a bell for me for every song. I used to not be able to pick it up i guess i've developed a good ear.

Thor 04-20-2006 06:50 AM

I think that I have a pretty good ear, but I just can't seem to find it, at least in most parts.

/still thinks they should re-master the album.

If they did then they would sell so many because people who already have the album would want to pick it up for the better mixing.

HazMan 04-20-2006 06:58 AM

It's this kind of low throbbing bass i can't describe. Its definately there though i can recognise deep notes working around the guitars.

A remastering would be interesting. I love the old school feel to it though if they changed that it feel rather strange to listen to.

Thor 04-20-2006 07:02 AM

Well I'd like it if they used the same mixing they used on Master of Puppets. I thought they really got it right on there.

[1]why would a bassist start halfway through a song!?!?
[2]all i hear is heavy guitar pronouced by floor toms and bass drums.
[3]no, again, i really think your a hearing the bassy guitar. hence the distortion.

i think the low throbbing bass and the distortion mentioned in my first quote all come from the fuzzy and grinding guitar, bassed up with pronouncing drum. there's "bass", and then there's the sound of a bass string. i don't hear the latter.
Well I'd like it if they used the same mixing they used on Master of Puppets. I thought they really got it right on there.
na, i really like the sound in ajfa. would be interesting, though.
