He got the CD obviously. He said he hasn't listened to it yet.

It's amazing though.

Thanks for the recommendations Illmatic.

Ugh, I'm bored of Nick Drake now :P

I just listened to all his 3 albums, but stopped halfway in "Five Leaves Left". I think I like Bryter Later the best.

Ah. I see. Either way, it's great.

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 11-25-2005 07:32 PM

Every half year or so I feel this uncertain need to make a mix for my friends (nice guy, I am), to open up new doors musically. This time I've got:

1. Maggot Brain - Funkadelic
2. Too Much Monkey Business - The Yardbirds
3. Minor Swing - Django Reinhardt
4. #2 on Friday Night in San Fran - Di Meola/McLaughlin/De Lucia
5. Beck's Bolreo -Jeff Beck
6. Vampire Blues - Neil Young
7. Pressure Drop - The Maytals
8. I Don't Know You - New Riders of the Purple Sage
9. California Stars - Billy Bragg & Wilco
10. Octopus - Syd Barrett
11. Draw Your Breaks - Scotty
12. Wasn't Born to Follow - The Byrds
13. Airbag - Radiohead
14. What'd I Say (Parts 1 And 2) - Ray Charles
15. In the Aeroplane Over the Sea - NMH
16. Christ for President - Billy Bragg & Wilco
17. Jesus on the Mainline - Ry Cooder
18. Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley

My friends usually really dig my mix CD's but this is the most diverse mix I've ever assembled so I'll just see what happens.

I just listened to Grace and it was ok. The only track that truly stuck out was "Hallelujah". I enjoyed it so much I added it to my mix.

/voted Danzig :p

JonG 11-25-2005 07:47 PM

The song "Grace" is awesome aswell..

dr._feelgood 11-25-2005 07:54 PM

I found Jeff Buckley kind of boring when I listened to Grace and Halleluiah. His voice is decent but i don't know why everyone thinks his voice is AMAZING. I might try and listen to his stuff again later, it's just not my thing.

Such a great song. I didn't know until recently that Jimmy Page played rythem guitar and produced that session.

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 11-25-2005 08:12 PM

He disputes that he wrote it. Of all the nerve! He has the fucking nerve to claim he actualy wrote something for a change! What a prick.

Edit: All the hair metal I've heard is really bad.

JonG 11-25-2005 08:16 PM

Same. Especially Motley Crue.
I wouldn't consider Third Stone from the Sun to be pscyhadelic. Psychadelia requires having some aspect of dreaminess for me, and I don't get that from that song. Still a great song, though.
I never said it was psychedelic I said it was my favourite.

*confused*

As for hair metal I dont mind Van Halen now and then but yeah for the rest of it nothing appeals to me.

Weird. Page wrote like 98% of all Zeppelin tunes so I don't know why he would need to argue that he wrote "Beck's Bolreo".

I'm not a fan of hair metal. Bands like Ratt, Poison, and Whitesnake are interchangable. I can't tell the difference between them. I love Van Halen but wouldnt classify them under hair metal. They sound like classic rock to me durring the DLR era.
Weird. Page wrote like 98% of all Zeppelin tunes so I don't know why he would need to argue that he wrote "Beck's Bolreo".
Yea, but he stole 65% of the material he "wrote".

Is GNR hair metal?

dr._feelgood 11-25-2005 08:29 PM

Yes GNR is basically the definitive hair metal band (Besides Motley Crue or Poison)

StreetlightRock 11-25-2005 08:32 PM

Yea, but there pretty unique in terms of hair metal, and besides, songs like Civil War and November Rain arnt products of a staright Hair Metal formula.

zabbit82 11-25-2005 08:33 PM
Yea, but he stole 65% of the material he "wrote".
I agree with that about thier first two albums. I know for a fact that Willie Dixon sued Zeppelin about the song "Whole Lotta Love" that it was stolen from Dixon's "You Need Love."

GNR hair metal? It's debatable. I haven't listened to enough of thier stuff lately to dictate that.

TheShaneOMac 11-25-2005 08:39 PM

GNR are not hair metal. They are hard rock at it's finest.

dr._feelgood 11-25-2005 08:46 PM

Did they just get lumped into that scene since they were from LA where all the 80s glam metal bands were from?

StreetlightRock 11-25-2005 09:11 PM

Lol, I LOVE that video. I dunno, I tend to agree with Hard Rock. Pft, anyways, lets not get bogged down with genres - Sweet Child is still one of my all time favroute songs ever.

JonG 11-25-2005 09:12 PM

I like the solo and thats about it :)

Excellent and fun solo to play.

zabbit82 11-25-2005 09:14 PM

Sweet Child O' Mine is an awesome song. Definatly one of my favorites to play on guitar. I really dig the solo Slash plays during that latter half. It sounds more hard rock than glam metal.

JonG 11-25-2005 09:15 PM

Indeed. Wah solos++

Even though, Mick Mars used one..

JonG 11-25-2005 09:17 PM

No, the Sweet Child O' Mine solo. It's excellent for a band I don't like.

StreetlightRock 11-25-2005 09:19 PM

I can play that decending run without a pick. *grin*. Sounds funny, but its possable. I just love EVERYTHING about that song. Tone, intro, solo, chorus, lyrics... everything.

Woodstock 11-25-2005 09:21 PM

I just bought:

-The Psychadelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators
-Born Under a Bad Sign

Converse.

zabbit82 11-25-2005 09:22 PM

That song has to have one of the best hooks ever. Tone, notes, tempo.... love it. :thumb:

Glitterati 11-25-2005 09:22 PM

I like GNR. I wouldn't call them that glammy, I'd say Hanoi Rocks and Poison and Van Halen were more glam. GNR was still hair metal, though.

np: Sweet Child O' Mine

Nice and nice. Born Under A Bad Sign is short and sweet. I plan on buying it sometime.

StreetlightRock 11-25-2005 09:24 PM

I wonder how a Mick Mars solo album would turn out... or does he already have one?

JonG 11-25-2005 09:26 PM

He looks like he was embalmed but hasn't fallen over yet.

TheDMV 11-25-2005 09:28 PM

p.s. Mick Mars is a fantastic blues guitarist
I read/skimmed an article/interview on that. It didn't quite capture my interest because I'm not so wild about the Crue.

If you could upload this eventually it would be great. I already have Easter Everywhere and Bull of the Woods.

I have that.. you want me to upload it?

I did as well. It was a Gutiar World issue a while ago with Jimmy Page on the cover :). I read part of it and Mick said he started as a blues guitarist but was forced into the glam metal stuff when he moved to LA.

Aw... I'll give that song a listen, i havnt heard it, although Mick Mars is definately one of the most underrated guitarists ever.

^ Dude, i was DVG, and i can't stand that name anymore. 's what you get for signing up by hiting 3 random letters on the keyboard.
