how to play guitar well enough to write stuff (and understand as opposed to just hitting notes randomly, hoping that the next note sounds good following the previous, etc.) rather than just doing covers.

I know basic theory from drums but can't read melodic sheet music or anything. I know hardly anything about guitar either.

Sounds good man, thanks for all of the information, I'll check it out.
dont rely on tabs though man, youll kick your own ass later on in your guitar life, well that is if you dont get too caught up in sherd/meturhl

Left Face Down 04-19-2010 04:51 PM

He'll probably quickly realize that 85% of tabs are crap now a days. I really do miss the days of MX and tab sites every where. I assume you're referring to being able to learn a song by ear when talking about kicking your own ass later. If he practices the scales, learns how to recognize them by sound for the most part; it makes learning a song by ear a lot easier.

It is a case of do what I say not what I do. Theory is great, I just never had the patience to become a BIG theory buff. I know like 3 or 4 scales by heart, can play along with a metronome, and past that I hardly try to learn songs by ear. As the songs are either mainly power chords, i.e. too easy, or me trying to tab out a Paul Gilbert song, i.e. too hard/long.

...sadly does impress the ladies when they are listening to crap music and you figure out the power chords on the spot. Though it really takes little skill.

Kuffuffled 04-19-2010 06:47 PM

Good tabs are in power tab / guitar pro.. any other random txt tab is most likely garb

SgtBaker 04-19-2010 07:24 PM

I'm not really looking to play covers and such, I'd rather be able to create original stuff

mnemonic 04-19-2010 07:24 PM

back when i used tabs i always used the text ones, i didn't discover powertab/guitarpro until after i stopped using tabs.

kinda sucks, i wish i knew about powertab/guitarpro back when i started playing, would have been much nicer.

not what i was thinkin but your right about that as well. im talking more about the fact that tabs have a 'gated' feel to them, when using standard notation your looking more at music and less at guitar.

Rippetoes Starting Strength is your best bet for beginner lifting.

AG 04-20-2010 03:10 AM

Protip - Don't buy any weights.

/looks at pile of weights in bedroom, grr. One day.

Squirrel 04-20-2010 04:45 AM

I'd advise buying a set of weights over a gym membership, for beginners.

Aes820 04-20-2010 05:54 AM

That episode of Man vs Wild where Bear gets pwned by the bee was on telly here last night.
Same episode where he drinks his own piss out of a rattlesnake skin.
Classic.

And if you want to get strong, I reckon pulling is better than lifting.

Squirrel 04-20-2010 06:05 AM

Lifting is a general term; plenty of lifting routines make use of push/pull/press splits.

Why only limit yourself to one type of movement, serious, why? i'm interested to know, given that pulling rules out deadlifts, squats, half of clean and press etc.

Left Face Down 04-20-2010 06:47 AM

AG seems like a gun nut, but any one who knows is free to chime in. Any one know the value of a 1919 Beretta 6.35mm? In great condition, though I reckon it hasn't been fired since WW1.

AG 04-20-2010 06:55 AM

Couldn't tell you about prices. Go to /k/

Squirrel 04-20-2010 07:55 AM

I wonder if these steroid eye drops i'm using will have any effect on my physique when i start lifting again

Blue_Moon 04-20-2010 10:04 AM

Left Face Down 04-20-2010 10:08 AM

click'd cause I'm bored.

Got my RG570 to work, but the single coil seems like it isn't getting grounded. So I'll have to open her up again. Bought a Fender 5-way switch yesterday when i was in Guitar Center. I guess the other switch was bad or something... idk, it worked when the DiMarzios were in there. I wasn't getting any sound from it prior to swapping out the selector switch for the Fender and now everything works properly, just a louder than normal buzz from the single coil.

Blue_Moon 04-20-2010 11:29 AM

fingers mccoy 04-20-2010 12:04 PM

what do i make tonight, salmon or some kind of meat and potato dish such as hot pot or cottage pie, i need some protein.

Squirrel 04-20-2010 12:06 PM

Pie, nice and Northern.

purple_hazer 04-20-2010 12:33 PM

cottage pie the same thing as shepherds pie? if so then it is ultimate win

Squirrel 04-20-2010 12:41 PM

Shepherds pie is made with lamb, Cottage pie is made with beef.

Left Face Down 04-20-2010 12:47 PM

Not a fan of Salman, so I say hot pot.

purple_hazer 04-20-2010 12:50 PM
Shepherds pie is made with lamb, Cottage pie is made with beef.
Squirrel 04-20-2010 12:53 PM

AG 04-20-2010 01:37 PM

Kuffuffled 04-20-2010 02:23 PM

Awesome, windows update bricked my non-legit MS Office :( should of thunk

The Transporter 04-20-2010 02:27 PM

if you're only using it for word processing and basic stuff, i'd just get openoffice.org it's free

fingers mccoy 04-20-2010 02:27 PM

i am back from shop and have bought for myself:

400g oxtail
400g aberdeen angus mince
maris piper potatoes
leeks
cabernet sauvignon
a carton of beef stock
button mushrooms
carrots
onions
eggs
broccoli

now to begin the work.

Kuffuffled 04-20-2010 02:43 PM
if you're only using it for word processing and basic stuff, i'd just get openoffice.org it's free
Very nice, surprised windows doesn't come with anything

The Transporter 04-20-2010 03:31 PM

they'd be cannibalizing their MS Office products if it did...

open office .org has a spread sheet and word processor and all that jazz, can read and save ms office formats, it just has trouble with advanced excel functions and crazy stuff like that.

Kuffuffled 04-20-2010 03:56 PM

Back in 98 it came with word didn't it? That's when the program wasn't obnoxiously shitty like it is now

Blue_Moon 04-20-2010 03:57 PM

i like open office, esp its .pdf exporting function

nght5tlkr 04-20-2010 06:13 PM

http://www.zoho.com is free and works brilliantly as a MS Office substitute as well as other programs.

fingers mccoy 04-21-2010 06:10 AM

so this cottage pie is extremely bangin
