Apocalyptic Raids 01-17-2007 09:16 PM

Thanks, it's a great cover. I was especially happy to find a a version without the text through google image search.

MattSharpIsCool 01-17-2007 11:21 PM

I gave A Momentary Lapse of Reason a full listen today, and I gotta say, it's not too bad. The second side of the album drags on a bit (after "on the turning away"), but it's pretty good.

Danger Bird 01-17-2007 11:48 PM

Pulse was disappointing. Not totally terrible but diappointing.

MattSharpIsCool 01-17-2007 11:55 PM

I thought they sounded really good on Pulse. I can understand why some people don't like it though. No Roger, and the first half of the show could have some better songs. The show was too bright, also. I always picture Pink Floyd shows as dark and smokey.

Apocalyptic Raids 01-18-2007 12:01 AM

I really liked Pulse, and to be honest Roger's absence didn't bother me that much (except for Comfortably Numb).

i really like a momentary lapse of reason too

Riva 01-18-2007 12:13 AM

The lighting effects was Dave's reaction to having to play in the dark with Roger so many times, I bet.

I didn't mind it too much either, but it does take a little bit away.

And yes, I didn't really like how they did Comfortably Numb, but eh.

I like it too :p

Not anywhere near as good as The Division Bell, but the album had a lot of atmsophere for me, even if it was created by ugly synths.

Amit 01-18-2007 12:53 AM
Wow, Amit, I really like what you did with the song, you actually improved on some of the weaker points of the song, especially the atmosphere.
much love and thanks :D

Im not a fan of Comfortably Numb on Pulse either. Although I adore the extended solo.

Yield 01-18-2007 07:02 PM

Yeah, I'm not as much a fan of David Gilmour's stuff when he headed the band, so I found the beginning of Pulse to drag on a little bit. The rest was great though.

ghettoeddo 01-18-2007 07:24 PM

i've got the CD version of pulse, wodnering if i should get the DVD as well

Yield 01-18-2007 07:33 PM

I would say you should, if you liked the CD. Or even if you didn't like it.

ghettoeddo 01-18-2007 07:34 PM

haha i dont wanna bring up the whole pulse vs. pompeii thing again

Yield 01-18-2007 07:43 PM

haha

I've noticed that this thread goes in circles a bunch

Aussie Floyd --> "I'm going to go see waters" --> Hey, what album should I get next? --> You need drugs for a better experience --> No you don't --> I respect both of your opinions, but... --> Haven't we had this conversation before?

ghettoeddo 01-18-2007 07:44 PM

true words

Riva 01-18-2007 07:57 PM

Yes, but that's what makes if fun. We should start up the song interpretations again.

ghettoeddo 01-18-2007 08:04 PM

i think pigs is about pigs

MattSharpIsCool 01-18-2007 09:21 PM

Us and Them is about Them and Us

Jim 01-19-2007 12:16 AM

Actually I think Us and Them (my interpretation :p) is actually referencing America's involvement in Vietnam. The song not only contains many lyrics alluding to war, but the actuall title itself gives a clue.

U.S and Them?

It also holds a spooky relevance with the current war in Iraq...

"With, without? (weapons of mass destruction!)
And who'll deny its what the fightings all about?"

This should get things rollin' :smoke:

MattSharpIsCool 01-19-2007 12:42 AM

Well it definitely is an anti-war song. Considering Vietnam was the war of choice during the early 70's, when the song was written, it could very easily be about that. I'm sure it had some influence on Roger writing the song at the time.

And seeing as Vietnam is so similar to Iraq, it makes sense.

But really, I think the song is more anti-war in general, than anti-Vietnam.

Surf 01-19-2007 05:26 AM
Roger writing the song at the time
Rick Wright wrote Us and Them. It was his last contribution, song writing wise, to the group if I remember correctly.

Yes it is definately more focused on wars in general, because it therefore fits in with the whole concept of Dark Side. With the fears of old age, wealth, war and flying (And some others) and how they can accumulate to create insanity. Something I have always wondered though, where does Any Colour You Like come in to the concept?

Riva 01-19-2007 05:42 AM

Any Colour You Like is the descent into madness, and hence the title refers to the fact that it doesn't matter how you get there, the end result is the same.

Aha, brilliant!

Lunch 01-19-2007 01:28 PM

Us and Them>Any Color>Brain Damage>Eclipse is a conceptually stunning sequence through and through.
Us and Them>Any Color>Brain Damage>Eclipse is a conceptually stunning sequence through and through.
truth. This whole sequence of songs has always been my favorite part of Dark Side.

I assumed that Us and Them was about war in general. I think that the whole DSoTM album in general is about the things that make people mad. Time (Time...duh) the fear of death (The Great Gig in the Sky) Money (Money...duh) war (Us and Them) and others. I think that Breath might have to do with isolation, but I'm not sure.
