When he says you can use your USB to record... the USB connects from the pod, I'm guessing... but does it connect from the guitar to the amplifier as well?

Here is a lame connection diagram:

Wall outlet -> Amplifier -> PodXT -> Guitar

You can have the XT running to both your comp and your amp. It can connect to your comp via the USB and it just has an ordinary line out capability which you can then run into an amp. I think that's what you meant.

Yessir it can, thats how CJ has it at the moment. I typically connect mine through the computer speakers, although it doesn't really matter, its all preference. Plus if you had a kickass amp, it sounds great through it

How come you guys are always talking about PODs

Alright, so heres your [url=http://tinypic.com/2cf0a0]POD[/url]. Note the red cable and the green cable coming out of it. The USB is the black cable. The red cable is in the PODS input (labelled input) and is [url=http://tinypic.com/2cf0gy]connected to my guitar[/url]. The green cable is in the PODS headphone jack, which is [url=http://tinypic.com/2cf0qx]connected to my amp[/url]. The [url=http://tinypic.com/2cf0jc]USB cable[/url] is run into my [url=http://tinypic.com/2cf139]laptop[/url].

You can play guitar with all these at once. The sound will come out of the Amp and the recording will be recorded into the laptop. Similarly you can hook your POD to the soundcard instead and it would play through your laptop instead of amp.
