Gear doesn't make good musicians. It's like an expensive car, doesn't make you a good driver but it can help you more easily demonstrate your miniscule penis.
Fo sho.

I'm dead set about the speed thing, you practise your two finger technique enough and you can go as fast as you can flailing with a pick. I'm not opposed to using them for flavour but that's where it ends for me.

funkyhoney 08-09-2009 11:48 PM
Totally.

What was their band like as a whole?

The guitarists for this band were pretty good. Like skill wise they were pretty good. But the song writing was baaaad; the same generic metal riffs, with horrible horrible horrible vocals and cringe inducing lyrics. I'd compare it to a retarded James Hetfield. I really am sick of band settling on sub (in this case sub-sub-sub) par vocalists. It's like, if you can't get a band together where there are no weak links. Why bother?

It's a little elitist of me, but I'd prefer there were better bands out there than a mass of shitty ones.
They're not bad as a whole, but I think that they think they're a lot better than they are.

If that makes sense.

Well I very rarely use one, I don't seem to have trouble keeping up but I think it could be helpful when we do a string of faster songs.

gaslight 08-09-2009 11:52 PM

What picks do you use?

I have a dish of guitar picks that I have as a courtesy for guitarits, I always carry around some spare picks for forgetful guitarists and a drum key for forgetful drummers, but I have a couple of bass picks. The one I tool around with is a Jim Dunlop big stubby 3 mil. It's pretty chunky, cute purple colour.

When I do use them, Dunlop Tortex 0.88mm. Or sometimes the SS icepix I wear on a thing on my wrist.

Gattsu347 08-09-2009 11:54 PM

good gear doesnt make a good musician. It does make a musician with **** that isn't half broken/jerry rigged. i've never been more aware at how constantly moving musical equipment is generally bad for it. I've had 3 vaccume tubes out of 5 go in my ampeg lately, none during a show thank god.

my guitarist's amp showed up at a show busted, cymbals get dented, it's even more of a money pit then before.

gaslight 08-10-2009 12:01 AM

Tubes are a danger because they're probably the most sensitive thing you can have in an amp.

I've always been extremely careful with my gear, I've been lucky enough to not damage any of it. Except that time I nearly cracked the headstock off my bass, that was my negligent parenting moment :(.

Gattsu347 08-10-2009 12:05 AM

i had to get a hardcase inspite of what they cost. my head nearly vibrates off my cab when im playing so i bought some cheese cloth and nailed it to the cab :p

yeah tubes are finicky, i figure once one goes they all go so i might just get two more while im at it and start with all fresh

funkyhoney 08-10-2009 12:05 AM

I'm mildly worried about the tubes in my new amp. I'm even considering replacing them with some **** ones just so I can keep the originals for if I want to sell it one day.

Gattsu347 08-10-2009 12:06 AM

mine are in a svt-3 pro which only has 5 pre-amp tubes which are smaller, cheaper and easier to get.

Gattsu347 08-10-2009 12:10 AM

im gonna go play civilization

As a bassist you'll rarely if ever need to go so fast that even a pretty decent player couldn't keep up.

And by that I mean you usually won't be called upon to play some sort of ridiculously paced grindcore or death metal.

gaslight 08-10-2009 12:24 AM

Yeah, and if anyone does ask you to play grindcore, just call a cab and go somewhere worth being.

Convectuoso 08-10-2009 12:45 AM

I concurr.

It'll be worth the taxi fare amirite?

Go post that in R&M and see what happens lolz.

Why ask the rock and metal forum for their thoughts when I could just give a retarded goat a typewriter and get something that would be twice as intelligent, let alone spelt better.

funkyhoney 08-10-2009 12:56 AM

I happen to have a typewriter on my desk..

burtonbassist_102 08-10-2009 02:42 AM

god anderson silva is such a badass.
Why ask the rock and metal forum for their thoughts when I could just give a retarded goat a typewriter and get something that would be twice as intelligent, let alone spelt better.
Because if a goat typed it, it wouldn't be METuhL enuff.

gaslight 08-10-2009 09:32 AM

That's only because goats don't have the ability for homo-eroticism which is the basis of metal.

funkyhoney 08-10-2009 09:35 AM

And leather pants, you need leather pants to be metal.

I've got one better:

Acid trips and Green Man are pretty metal.

Also, this made me laugh:

Efrim 08-10-2009 12:20 PM

I just got hit by a car.
I'm alive though, apparently.

BenJammin 08-10-2009 12:57 PM

lolwut

Really? How'd that happen?

Efrim 08-10-2009 01:03 PM

I was pedalling through a back alley to my favourite bike store to buy a helmet, and this car came screaming into the alley behind me and clipped my shoulder with his side mirror. I went down on my right hip and cut my hand open pretty bad.

I bought a good helmet.

BenJammin 08-10-2009 01:13 PM

Did he stop?

Efrim 08-10-2009 01:16 PM

Briefly, to ask if I had broken anything/see if I was alive.
I told him I was ok, I was just bleeding a lot, and he said ok then and left.

BenJammin 08-10-2009 01:34 PM

You're lucky it wasn't a woman driving.

Efrim 08-10-2009 01:40 PM

He was driving a lady car, so that's probably why he hit me at all.
There was blood all over the sidewalk outside of the bike store from my hand, but it stopped bleeding pretty quickly. They made me sit down and let me use their sink and stuff.
So yeah, that's been my day. What's up?

BenJammin 08-10-2009 01:46 PM

Eh, not much. Having a lazy day. Went to a friend's birthday party and got suitably destroyed. It was pretty ridiculous.

Efrim 08-10-2009 01:54 PM

Glad to hear it.
I took stock of my liquor cabinet, and realized need to finish it all in about 10 days. What do I do, Ben?

BenJammin 08-10-2009 01:59 PM

Is that a real question?

FunkMetalBass 08-10-2009 02:24 PM

You priority ship it to me and I'll take care of it this weekend for you.

You're obviously still recovering from the accident and can't consume your regular dosage of liquor.

Efrim 08-10-2009 02:27 PM

On the contrary, a glass of bourbon would steady my nerves and improve my fortitude.

I've been buying 40s of gin and bourbon of various kinds to test them in cocktails, so I have a few to push through.

BenJammin 08-10-2009 02:34 PM

I believe in you. Conversely, you can mail them to me as a belated birthday present.

Might I ask why you have such a short timeframe to finish them off?

I'm leaving for Montreal on the 22nd. I'll need about two days for the packing, bike dismantling etc, so 10 is about right.

Ben, when you come to Montreal, I will buy you whiskey and make you drink it for your birthday.

:( I don't like whiskey and you know this.

I'll settle for another pickle, though. >_>

Ok. It will be at the bottom of a bottle of whiskey.
