i think the aversion i have toward that sort of discussion in person is that people try to base their compatibility on it or like they try to derive things about your character and i hate that because my experience with music is way too complex and particular for anything less than a 5 minute monologue


like really its not as simple as asking "what kind of music do you listen to" like i honestly dont know how to answer that question/what people think theyre asking when they ask it

a lot of the guys in my house have pretty good taste in music

by which i mean they listen to stuff that i like

i know a few guys i have close taste in music with

haven't made out with any of them though

i just dont get the preoccupation with other peoples tastes in music, even your close friends

when people ask me this online I just link them to my last.fm now

if they ask me in person I just try to steer the conversation towards getting them to namedrop a few bands they like and see if we have any compatibility

normally I don't try and start these discussions, there have been instances where people do get upset over differences in personal taste.

Well, if you're gonna have a party where music is played, it sucks if some people are gonna cry like babies whenever one single, mild metal track is played in between loads and loads of boring dubstep, electro and pop music, which is what most of my friends have started listening to.
