MTHM is just a p!ss take IMO, saying to the man, look you thought you were the tough guy on the phone, now look at you. Heard by millions, basically ridiculed by tool.

HWAP is just saying that selling out is something bands have to do to be signed. Their record labels do have some impact on the music they produce and some people fail to realise that.
Besides, it's a good contrast, and I think Aenima has a lot of contrast running through its songs.

EDIT: For example, at one part on the song Aenema, Maynard is singing calmy with frantic double-bass drumming ("Mom's gonna fix it all soon.
Mom's comin' round to put it back the way it ought to be") and then it launches into a guitar solo that starts out somewhat pleasant/calm and then transitions into more of a darker and frantic solo, which then leads into Maynard's whole "Fuck..." spiel and the whole mood of the song builds more tension.

This is the kind of thing that Aenima is great for.
The "Fuck..." spiel is probably my favorite moment on Aenima altogether.

Dr. Jake Destructo 03-11-2005 04:22 PM

My favorite moment(s) on Ænima are found in 46 & 2, Eulogy, and Hooker with a penis.

46& 2-The polyrythmic breakdown is just amazing.
Eulogy-I think it's the part after the first verse where Jones plays one of the main riffs one time, and it just sounds real smooth.
HWaP- Same idea as with Eulogy, on it's Justin who plays a little mini bass 'solo' I guess you could call it. It's the part right before 'Don't fuck us.'

:thumb: The last 2 are just short little filler segments, but man, do they ever work beautifully.

Dried Muffin Remnants 03-11-2005 04:43 PM

My favorites

Third Eye: Jones' last riff
Eulogy: same as mushroom mofo
Stinkfist: transition from "To breathe, to feel, to know that you're alive" to "finger deeper within the borderline"

BlindWriting 03-11-2005 04:45 PM

Also, I've said it before and I'll say it again now, Maynard's vocal melody for the "I've missed you so much / came out to watch you play" segments in Third Eye are beautiful.

Absolutely. :thumb:

The JoZ 03-11-2005 04:49 PM

Favorite Tool Moments:

Aenima: Outro, starts at "Try to bring it down again..."
Third Eye: Adam's second solo.
The Grudge: Last 31 seconds, drum solo outro
Schism: Outro
Parabola: Adam's solo
Lateralus: "With my feet up off the ground..." from there on out
Reflection: "So crucify the ego..." at, I dunno, the 8 minuteish mark...where Maynard stretches out his lines.

I forgot those. The second solo on Third Eye is just so foreboding and..badass.

Dried Muffin Remnants 03-11-2005 04:54 PM

The Grudge: riff after "...and sink in deeper"
"...control it..."

Awesome. There are countless other ones, but I'm listening to the Grudge right now.

Also, speaking of Lateralus, the Parabol/Parabola video is awesome. So weird and trippy. But it all makes since. Those guys at the beginning of the video were awesome too. Adam's animation was brilliant.

Kage 03-11-2005 04:54 PM

My favorite Aenima moments:

Eulogy: The whole segment before and after "... when you hear your own Eulogy"
Jimmy: When the bass/drums crash in with the intro guitar riff
Third Eye: So many, including the "came out to watch you play" parts and the guitar solos
H: The part where Maynard sings "...I should have died, that's alright, I don't mind" and the band breaks out, etc.

Otherside 03-11-2005 05:38 PM

Aenima stars:

Pushit: The whole end segment, it's beatiful.

Stinkfist: "I'll...keep...digging..till I... feel... something" Great part.

Aenima: The "Some say your comet..." part is awesome so is the "I wanna see it give way" part.

Thid Eye: The whole song, definitly my favorite of Aenima.

I'm supprised no one but me has mentioned Pushit

Dr. Jake Destructo 03-11-2005 05:42 PM

To me, Pushit is probably the weakest song off of Ænima, minus the fillers. However, the live version of Push it is just amazing, so therefore, I don't feel bad criticizing the song. It is still an amazing song, but compared to their other material, it doesn't stand out for me.

If I had to pick out "weak" tracks it would be H, 46&2 and Jimmy.

Those songs aren't really anything special to me, but still good songs.

Kage 03-11-2005 05:47 PM

I have to disagree with you on that. While I love every song on Aenima, I think Pushit is probably the weakest. 46&2 is a great song, but also a weaker point on the album.

As for H and Jimmy, those are some of my favorites.

At first, I really liked H, because of that riff with the chorus/delay effect on it, but other than that, I found nothing special about it. 46 and 2 has perhaps one of the coolest breakdowns ever, so it's one of my favorites, and Jimmy is also one of those okay songs for Tool's standards.

EDIT: My faves- Stinkfist, Eulogy, 46&2, Hooker with a Penis, Ænema, and Third Eye.

Dried Muffin Remnants 03-11-2005 05:48 PM

I love all of the songs (excluding the fillers) except for Jimmy.

Pu**** actually has a very nice crescendo IMO. H. is a very strong song lyrically, and 46 & 2 is the song I've noticed that has gotten a lot of people into Tool.

On Jimmy-- I just find the beginning not to be easy on the ears,

Kage 03-11-2005 05:49 PM

I don't understand all the Jimmy bashing. That's one of my favorites. Other than that, I agree with you, In Chains.
I don't understand all the Jimmy bashing. That's one of my favorites. Other than that, I agree with you, In Chains.
Don't get me wrong. I don't hate the song, in fact, it's pretty solid lyrically. I just think that, for Tool, it's mediocre. But I could see how you would like it, it has a lot of meaning.

Kage 03-11-2005 05:51 PM

I do see why people think it's mediocre, but in that respect I think Pushit would be the weaker of the two, but to each his own. Something about the guitar/bass interaction along with the vocals and lyrics in that song just really does it for me.

EDIT: Also for me, it has this cool, dark atmosphere to it, which really boosts my liking of the song.
That article was written about a year ago, don't scare me like that.
wouldn't it be better that it was written a year ago? wouldn't that mean they were a year closer to bringing new stuff out? I pray they do, they are my favourite band by 6 million miles. Most other bands bore me. Great thread! :thumb:

No, it's just that at first I thought it was recent, and when they talked about how they weren't even writing with Maynard yet and how the songs were in the early stage, I was scared for a moment. :p

Dried Muffin Remnants 03-11-2005 05:54 PM

Yup; to each his own. And Pu**** definitely isn't one of their bests, I agree.

I have nothing against the song, it's the number eleven I have a problem with.

/randomosity

I decided to put on Jimmy and find out why I don't really like it. So far, I liked the intro riff, until the bass enters. Chancellor's tone sounds a little too much like Fieldy's bass does.

I just found the entire song kind of monotonous. I must say that the high point is when Justin comes in at about 2:45 with the overdrive. That's sweet. I beleive it's him. Either that, or Adam is using some kind of octave effect. Anyone for clarification on what's going on here?

About 30 seconds after this, I feel Adam goes into overkill mode with the main riff here. It's just a little too much here. Actually, I'm beginning to think it's the riff plus Danny's double bassage that is turning me off of this song.

Otherside 03-11-2005 05:55 PM

Pushit, Third Eye and Aenima are probably my favorite three overall from Aenima.

I was a little scared when Danny said that their next album may be influenced by a death metal band.
I'm hoping that it's a subtle influence.

Otherside 03-11-2005 05:58 PM

Whatever Tool does I'm fine with it. It's called progression.

Dried Muffin Remnants 03-11-2005 05:59 PM

My favorites list is way too long and it changes all the time. But lately I've been listening to a lot of Stinkfist, Eulogy, and Sober.

Uhh, sure. But that doesn't guarantee that it'll be better.

 Don't worry, we've been through this before. Danny did say that they would have some Meshuggah influence, but don't make it seem like Tool is going to become a death metal band. It could be any aspect of Meshuggah that Tool is being influenced by. It could very well be their heaviness, Tool could be taking some of Meshuggah's 'mathematica' cues, or maybe Adam is busting out with an 8 string, just as Meshuggah's 2 guitarists did on their album "Nothing."

It seems like I have said this exact same thing here. What do you think Kage?

The song is sort of monotonous. The main thing I like about that song is the intro riff...it's really sweet.
