Meh, why'd you recommened two Fusion albums? This forum needs some purist jazz lovers. I have no problem with Fusion at all, but I hate whenever a Jazz fred pops up , everyone starts whoring fusion bands.

Well fusion kind of helps bridge the gap between rock and jazz IMO. So if people like rock, then it's easier for them to get into fusion which will lead them to jazz. I'd imagine it would be harder to go from listening to rock to straight up jazz.
Yeah, I the only one's I have are/were my dad's.
My Dad is cool, but not cool enough to have QMS albums

I was just watching a movie about the first moon landing in Physics, and I saw this part where the astronauts were allowed to bring one cassette of their favorite songs
What songs would you bring to the moon if you had a cassette in 1969?

I should write an essay about what I would bring and send it to the colleges that asked me to answer a question we make up

I got into Jazz as follows:
Grateful Dead>Phish>moe.>MMW>Scofield>Jazz
or
Found Django Reindhardt album in old hippie's car

congrats. most people find it hard to do that. keep that in mind.

i went from jazz to rap to blues to rock. odd? yep.

Broken Arrow 11-13-2005 08:55 PM

I forget most of it. Bart and Marge were singing Sweet Home Alabama the part where they say southern man dont need him around. Then Bart asks Marge who Neil Young is. I forget her response. It wasn't really funny.

That's crazy! No seriously that's just freakish. What Jazz did you listen to?

The Buckets Got a Hole In It (live) - Louis Armstrong (<---how come on-one ever talks about him?)

DeusExMachina 11-13-2005 09:26 PM

I grew up listening to The Beatles and 50's rock. Then around 8 or so, I started playing early 20th century piano tunes, and got really into rag time, blues, and jazz. Then I went through a period where I didn't listen to much music. And then became a huge music freak.

Louis Armstrong is awesome. I gotta say, I love his voice when he sings. It's got that great deep raspy quality.

i listened to some pop-jazz (bad) but i also listened to stuff like steely dan, miles davis, charlie parker, etc. it was definitely a weird progression.

I would consider myself "purist jazz lover." I don't really like Jazz Fusion all that much, this might make people mad because it is the ultimate over-generalization (and I'm aware of that)....but all Jazz Fusion sounds too much the same to me.

Glitterati 11-13-2005 10:32 PM

I saw thinking the today, "I Fought The Law" is such a great song. Though I do prefer The Clash's version to the original by the Bobby Fuller Five.
Louis Armstrong is awesome. I gotta say, I love his voice when he sings. It's got that great deep raspy quality.
My dad gets all emotional when he hears that because he used to listen to it when me and my sister were really young.

PinkFreud 11-13-2005 10:39 PM

jeff beck's guitar shop has been sent out. a while ago actually. hope you guys like it.

But seriusly...does anyone like Midnight Oil? They were an Australian rock band from the '70s and '80s and I've recently become obsessed with them.

My introduction to a semi-analysis of post Beatles solo careers:

I like George's the best. This is mostly because of All Things Must Pass, which is an amazing album featuring some really awesome songwriting. I mean this thing is good, not a bad song on it. It even has some "super group" jams at the end, which I'm always diggin'. I also like Brainwashed, but other than that, I haven't heard much of his other stuff.

Paul is next. Ram is a very cool album. A lot of the songs are playfully laid-back, but that doesn't make them bad songs. Lots of unique instrument choices, and the arranging is very interesting, with tracks switching pace in mid-song. McCartney, his first solo album isn't as consistently good as Ram IMO, but it's still very decent. It also gets big points because Paul played every instrument on the album. I can't comment on his Wings era albums, as I've only heard "Band On The Run". That's a cool song though.

In third is John. Plastic Ono Band was the first album of his I heard. It's alright, but the most of the songs feel a little empty to me. I suppose that's how John intended it, with the subject matter of isolation playing a large part on this album, but it feels like the songs aren't as prominent. I'll probably need to listen to it more, but as of right now a lot of the songs don't stand out in my mind. Imagine is the next album I listened to. It felt "fuller" (the songs didn't sound as thin and empty) and I feel the songs are more complex than the ones on Plastic Ono Band. I'd say I like this album more than the first, but I think both of these pale in comparison to the few I mentioned by George and Paul.

I have no knowledge of Ringo's solo career right now.

Now this is mostly based on my impressions at this point (hence "introduction to a semi-analysis"), and I plan on listening to these albums further, and also other solo albums by these guys. So don't take it in the wrong way, I was just bored, and I'm tired. And for some reason I felt like giving my opinion on this.

Leper 11-14-2005 12:22 AM

I heard "Cathedral" by CSN on the radio for the first time today. I was blown away. It's such a well-crafted song. I went into a trance while listening to some of it. I think I'm going to have to get more CSN if it's all that good.

PinkFreud 11-14-2005 10:09 AM

have you guys heard jeff beck's cover of a day in the life? its amazing.

It's a really good cover but it doesn't come anywhere near the original.

I'm burning Guitar Shop onto a disc right now. :)

thickasabrick 11-14-2005 12:05 PM

No, I've never heard it. What album of his is it on?

I have no clue I just got it as a single song from PinkFrued when YSI was legal.

Guitar Shop is pretty good. The drums are great and of course Jeff Beck's guitar playing was great. Could've been better without the synth though.

How come we never talk CSN&Y anymore?

IMO CSN and Y were better apart. Though I still think they're great together.

So I got Billy Gibbon's (ZZ Top Guitarist) autograph today:cool:. He was doing a book signing at Borders in New York City today. My dad works right across the street from Borders so he went over and got a book and autograph for me. My dad really wanted to meet him since he kind of grew up with him in Houston when he was a kid. When he was 15, my dad moved to a new house and it was right next to Billy Gibbons house. They were only neighbors for a few months though because Billy was like 18 and left home. But my grandmother was good friends with Billy Gibbon's mother for a really long time, until Billy Gibbon's mother sold the house and was placed in a nursinghome. I thought that was a pretty cool story.

So anyways my dad got me his book and autograph:cool:

Cool story.

One time I saw Yao Ming at my blockbuster.

odd how the stories get progressively worse. haha.

Yeah this isn't topping my first story.

I saw two professional wrestlers in an elevator once. In New Orleans. It was pretty wierd.

Yeah So Far is a compilation but their career was brief so it covers most of their stuff.
