Could you name some of the bands that came out during that time? Back when I first starting learning about emo, I listened to a bunch of the older groups but didn't like it. But I also didn't like traditional hardcore then either, so I may appreciate the older groups more now.
MLIW is a very unique hardcore band though. /irrelevant |
Revolution Summer bands would be the pioneer emo bands back when it was called emotional hardcore. Check out Fugazi's early stuff for the sound, two big bands that participated would be Embrace and Rites of Spring.
|
just don't call it "emo" when talking to the n00bs. just be like "emotional hardcore". and if they are like ohhh taking back sunday lol? just be like "indian summer you'regayashellshutuporillpunchyouintheface."
|
Rtes of Spring is one of the hardcore-ish bands that I could never really see how the sound evolved into the stuff like Orchid. of course, all I've heard is the album End On End.

 Will do. |
I love the Rites of Spring song Patience.
|
I love Thrice.
|
haha, rites of spring just showed an above average intensity in the vocals, which other bands took and ran with. every band is gonna sound different. like how emo has no specific sound, all the bands sound reallly different, except for the traditional indian summer type stuff. its just something you know and can hear. the n00bs won't understand. they are too busy "non conforming".

evolution leads to crazy ****. doesnt it make you wonder how black sabbath lead to bands like emperor and deicide? (metal analogy) its the same way with emo and screamo. and by the way the orchid is sort of weird they are screamo but they sure do sound like grind at times. |
yeah orchid is on the thin line between "screamo" and grind.
|
yeah and doing that split with piggy d doesnt help their case of staying out of grind.
|
Orchid are on the thin line of being ruined by fanboys and still being a pretty good band.
|
you mean being a decent band and me whoring them too much ash?
|
no he means, "ben you are gay as hell, orchid suck, shut up."
|
Something like that. And RetiredAt21 being autistic and refusing to believe they're not as amazing as he makes them out to be.
Edit: Or Neeshee can just be blunt. |

I'm busy being stubborn.

stubborn about what? |
Unblocking you, noob.
|
you blocked because i said **** you, right? well i only said that because i was just told a second before that a girl I am really good friends with was in a coma and most likely gonna die, so while i am sorry for being mean to you cut me some slack.
|
Everytime I bvlock someone, I see their posts and I get curious as to what they are saying and unblock them.
|
I Would etc. have the best female vocals in hardcore.

IWASMOFFY? |
Yes, you freak.
|
yes ben, iwasmoffy. lindsey's vocals are awesome.
|
I like the female vocals in CTTS.
|
Lindsey's vocals > kathy's vocals
|
tr00f, but that chick from CTTS can sing quite well.
|
that is true.
Ya, one thing I was going to note is that emo as a genre is a subset of hardcore. However, emo is vastly different because of the things that have influenced its sound ever since it was invited in around 1984. Think about Hot Cross as a subset of emo, because they're an emo band at their core. Just because they've evolved beyond their initial emo label, and what defines the heart of their music, doesn't mean they're not emo. They're just diverse and emo.
This is the same as saying metalcore is a very specific subset of rock and roll because if you think about it: Rock{Hard Rock[Metal; Punk(Hardcore) => Metalcore]}
agreed, thats why I think its werid to call them emo, because em to me is Moss Icon, Still Life, Hoover, etc. Hot Cross and CTTS is screamo. There is a signifficant difference to me. |
Grrrr. The Dear Diary thread got closed before I got a chance to go on about how amazing they are.
|

Hot Cross aren't screamo. And Dear Diary own purely for the Johnny the Homicidal Maniac reference. |
Lindsey's vocals > kathy's vocals
The Assistant's female vocalist is as good if not better than those. |
many of the emo/screamo/"revolution summer" hardcore groups sound alot like more chaotic and aggressive forms on indie.
So now we have emo/screamo being listed as grindcore, hardcore, and possibly indie for some of them. All of them are very distint genres that have little in common with each other. My point? i don't have one because I woke up literally five minutes ago and I have no clue what I'm even talking about. :p |
How about you just stop talking about it? Emo will always be emo no matter what people call it.
Belle Epoque > Everyone. |
becasue it's clear that bands themselves are rejected the emo/screamo label because many of them have taken the genres off of their Myspaces and PVs. And now this Abolish Screamo Tour thing is going on.
Plus it's too hard to explain to everyone, and I hate talking to hard headed idiots that won't believe a single thing I tell them. Labelling it under hardcore or something will just make things much easier in the future. |
Who cares? Rites of Spring hated the emo label but they're an emo band. Just because a band doesn't like the label doesn't change the genre that they are.
And if it's too hard, don't explain it. Let them be ignorant. As long as you know what it is and enjoy it, that's all that matters. |
Sorry, but I like talking about music with people. I know it's emo, and I love it, but I can't be bothered to explain that to every single person I wish to talk to.
I'm just not going to shame the bands i like by callign them emo or screamo anymore. Apparently the Used is the common example of emo used by the media, and nearly everyone who listens to music. Let these horrible bands and their fans take the label and it's bad reputation, and we'll go on under a new title. The bands are hardcore, but I'm just looking for more descriptive words so that I can describe a bands sound more learly when I hold a conversatin with someone. |
Dude, it's really not that hard to explain. I've done it dozens of times in less than three minutes.
Shame them? If the bands themselves get so upset over the name of the genre of music they play, they should stop playing it. It's emo, always has been emo, always will be emo. The other bands already have a set genre called pop-rock. Let the public be misinformed. I'd rather have it the way it is now than the little scenesters running around talking about Saetia and how "hot" Billy Werner is just 'cause he was in an amazing band. If you're looking for a more descriptive word and they're ignorant, just say emotional hardcore. Afterall, that's what emo is. |
Listen to Wow. Its not important. Emo is Emo. Screamo is Screamo. Hardcore is Hardore. Pop-Punk is Pop-Punk. Drop it.
