What do you mean with "quirky"?
What do you mean with "quirky"?
Something about Jeff Beck's music makes me view it as "goofier". Not as serious, or playful might be better word choices.

Riva 03-27-2005 02:45 AM

Without Gilmour, they may have been no WYWH.

*shudders away from thought*

That just would've been wrong.

Well, it's safe to say that Pink Floyd wouldn't have been the same. But, would it have been better? I think that it would have been a more progressive band than it is. Gilmour is a very conservative guitarist, more to the style of Eric Clapton, not like Beck, or King Crimson's Fripp, or even Yes' Howe.

But I'm happy how it turned out, so yeah.

pigonthewing82 03-27-2005 07:28 PM

I just got The Wall demo tapes (well on cd). Its interesting, I think the demo's are more Waters view on how it should sound. Thank god Gilmour stepped in and changed some parts. For example, there wasn't suppose to be a solo on Another Brick In The Wall part two.

floyd29 03-27-2005 07:56 PM

well on a completely different thing i was just reading the hard rock cafe post and i was reminded of when i was driving on the highway 7 in Canada on the way to toronto and there was this sort of ontario housing deal and it looked pretty runned down and on the side (facing the highway) it was all pretty bad looking but standing out in black paint on the brick wall was PINK FLOYD THE WALL drawn just like on the CD cover. I thought that was pretty cool and laughed all the way to toronto.

floyd29 03-27-2005 08:01 PM

Another brick in the wall part two with no solo!? (scary thought)
Another brick in the wall part two with no solo!? (scary thought)
I know man, I mean loses all importance after the first minute and a half. Something that was cool though was Waters did the Careful With That Axe Eugene scream during ABITW part one. You know Waters owes so much to Gilmour. I mean I love Waters, but if Gilmour did as little work as he originally did on the Wall it would have been horrible.

Alessandro 03-27-2005 08:45 PM

What´s everyone´s thoughts about The Division Bell? I like it a lot, although Waters is not in it. Poles Apart is an amazing song.

Its has fine instrumentals, the only problem is a lot of Pink Floyd fans listen to them because of the lyrics, whitch arn't that great.

Isnt it just acoustic guitar strumming?

pigonthewing82 03-27-2005 09:03 PM
Isnt it just acoustic guitar strumming?
Nah the song kind of like another brick in the wall part one. Another difference is in the first verse Waters says "We don't need no education, we don't need no crowd control"

slowhand 03-27-2005 09:25 PM

... I'm kind of bored, so I'm gonna post some Pink Floyd trivia. Here I go:

To get the people talking bits on Dark Side of The Moon, generic cue cards were passed around to everyone they could find around Abbey Road, like janitors, engineers and even Wings, including Paul and Linda McCartney. There were passing around 20 questions, like "What do you think about the phrase 'dark side of the moon'?" "When was the last time you were violent, and were you in the right?", and "Are you afraid of dying?" The most sponataneous answers were used in the album. Paul and Linda didn't make the cut, though.

The studio time were interupted for two reasons: soccer and Monty Python television broadcast. The band were such great Monty Python fans that they used some of the earnings they made with Dark Side of the Moon to help fund Monty Python's The Holy Grail film.

Those are the only two I'll post now. Kind of tired.

Does anyone else feel a shiver down their spine during Saucerful of Secrets on Live at Pompeii, when Gilmour comes in on vocals? It's just.. amazing in a way I can't describe

I think thats Gilmour's best vocal work.

Careful With This Axe Eugene = Waters best vocals
Echoes = the bands (non Syd) best overall song (mabye shine on)
One of These Days = Waters best bass line

Yeah I'm a total fan boy of all the songs on Live at Pompeii :)

I know what you mean, but I think its even more effective on Ummagumma. When those vocals come in, it just gives me chills, everytime.

almighty_sandwich 03-28-2005 10:04 AM

Slowhand, those trivia bits are really cool. Got any more?

The imagery is just so awesome though. The wind blowing like it did, and all the rest of the band seem really into it. It's awe-inspiring.

On Careful With That Axe Eugene Gilmour has vocals, where he sings with his guitar. and that is one of my favorite songs guitar wise (the pompeii version).

That's true, the wind does enhance it a lot.

And I love on Careful With That Axe, Eugene how he sings and plays what he's singing. That is pretty cool.

SomethingfromHolland 03-28-2005 02:32 PM

The Live in Pompeï video is great, I think it's one of my favourite Floyd things

i only have it as a dvd, but is it available as cd too?

Distant Echoes 03-28-2005 02:44 PM

Just got back from Best buy and got A momentary lapse of a reason.

I know its not their best...but they didnt have the one i wanted, and it was only $11. Cant wait to hear it. :)

slowhand 03-28-2005 02:47 PM

Man, I'm listening to the Mars Volta, and I find them that they are kind of what Pink Floyd would have been if Jeff Beck would've been asked to join Pink Floyd instead of Dave Gilmour.

Anyways, they are awesome.

And yes, I think I have a few more trivia. I'll type some later.

PinkFloyd 03-28-2005 02:48 PM

On Careful With That Axe, Eugene (Live in Pompei) did anyone notice that run up that Gilmour does? It's the only time I've actually seen him play something fast.

the mars volta are Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin and Santana if they had a gangbang and produced offspring.

Yeah, Omar's playing reminded me of Page's.

They are a great band, maybe the most innovative band since Pink Floyd. They deserve all the praise they are getting and more.

And it also makes me proud to say that Omar is Puerto Rican, and that he's one of the great guitarist on the rock scene right now.

Omars playing tends to remind me more of Robert Fripp (King Crimson) escpially from the KC album "Starless and Bible Black"

slowhand 03-28-2005 03:17 PM

Well, it reminded me of Page when he plays on How the West Was Won. I haven't heard anything from King Crimson, well, not much, but I plan on picking them up later, as well as Yes.
