They [B]did[/B] slow down the Germans forces using sniper tactics in World War I enough for the French to regroup and repel them. They're also the reason Great Britain got involved in the war which helped massively because of the British Navy's blockade which suffocated Germany.

Ahh, but gas warfare wasn't introduced until later in the war because it was considered so unethical and inhumane.
